Help!! New nurse that hates Med/Surg!
I forgot to mention, I'm on a med/surg/oncology floor. Do you think that will limit where I can go even if I wait to transfer at my 1 year mark?

That was one of my concerns and one of the reasons I accepted my current med/surg position. Thank you for your advice!

Help!! New nurse that hates Med/Surg!
Hello all, I'm a new nurse and miserable. I'm going to vent a little and seek any advice you may have. Sorry this is so long! I guess I should start off by saying I've always disliked med/surg throughout nursing school. The reasons I wanted to be a nurse were for pretty unconventional reasons: 1) I have a great interest in Medical Aesthetics because I'm creative and love to help people feel better about themselves 2) I've also had a great interested in the Operating Room/Recovery because having outpatient surgery as a child is what sparked my interested in wanting to be a nurse in the first place. Before nursing school, I didn't write off bedside nursing completely because I didn't know if I would happen to enjoy it. However, as I mentioned earlier, while in nursing school I realized that I really disliked med/surg and working at the bedside. However, I also found that I enjoyed L&D and NICU. When applying for jobs, I was told by every nurse around me that I absolutely needed med/surg and bedside experience for at least 1 year- the same tune that everyone normally sings. Aside from that, all the jobs that I truly wanted required experience in that field (OR wants OR experience, med spas in Florida want Nurse Practitioners for injectors with experience) I couldn't find anyone willing to train a new grad in their specialty of choice so off to med/surg I went. So, I've been on a med/surg floor for about 3 months now. And to no surprise at all, I hate it. I despise everything about it- I won't go into detail and list every single thing I hate, because it's truly everything. I should point out that my floor itself is not that bad, which, to me, really validates my feelings that med/surg is just not for me and not my niche. I'm currently on orientation as a full-time employee however I've been hired for a per diem position. Everyday I fantasize about the day I can leave and work somewhere that I'll be truly happy. I've started to get anxiety before work and what feels like a depressing state. I just want OUT! According the the employee handbook, I can transfer to another floor or facility (there are 4 other facilities) after 6 months of employment. If I find a position that I really want, do you think it would look poorly on me if I were to apply/transfer after 6 months of being on my current floor? Even though I'm staying within the same hospital/company? Also, if you know of any other nursing jobs you think I'd enjoy please give me some ideas!

Do 3, 12 hr shifts for weekdays only exist?
Hello all! I'm new to nursing and my family and I were discussing the flexibility in nursing schedules (usually for experienced nurses,, we discovered). We're curious about all nursing schedules available out there, especially as I make the transition into a working nurse and think about my future jobs. I haven't really come across any work schedules in which you can work 3 12 hr shifts M-F? For example, working MWF, or TRF, or any combination of weekdays with no weekend requirements. So, I was wondering if those even exist? Or would you say M-F nursing jobs are typically 9-5 with weekends off? I understand if those schedules do exist, it will most likely be for nurses that have experience and not a new grad nurse like me. I'm just trying to think ahead of what a possible schedule can be for when I get married (next year) and plan to have a little family of my own soon after that.

Broward College Nursing Program August 2016
Hello everyone! I'm coming from North campus and I have some books for sale, if anyone is interested. I'm not sure if any of the required textbooks have changed but I have the Fundamentals of Nursing 8th Edition (Potter & Perry) for $80, Dosage Calculations 4th Edition for $100. And for the second semester I have the Med-Surg 9th edition textbook for $90, the corresponding study guide for $30, and the corresponding clinical companion is $40. I'm available to meet at North campus, if anyone is interested. Thanks!

So are we supposed to bring all of our textbooks with us on Monday? I wish they would send out an e-mail preparing us. I'm so nervous.

Oh my goodness! Thanks for telling us! I bought mine at South as well, I was excited on getting a deal! Does that go for the white coat as well? Did North campus give you any trouble when returning your purchase?

Thanks! I'll look into those as well. As for the color of our bags, I had the same thought. I was actually looking at a pink bag with white polka dots (super cute) but I thought I'd better hold off since the school seems pretty specific about everything lol. I think it may be fine though; it's not mentioned in the Uniform Policy and Professional Appearance section of the orientation packet.

I need to invest in one of those rolling backpacks. Has anyone gotten one? Any recommendations? Also, has anyone found shoes for a reasonable price? I found all white "leather" sketchers for $30 at Burlington Coat Factory. There is a gray "S" logo on the sides, but I figured I can try to cut the stitching off. :)

Not sure who this is directed to, but I absolutely agree. I happen to be one of those people that like getting shots (weird, I know) and I love watching my blood being drawn. So that would never hinder me going to nursing school. Thanks for your honesty about nursing school and the nursing field. I'm excited to begin! I've been wanting this forever and the moment has finally come. Like you said, I'm sure that this will be the hardest thing we've ever done. But it will all be worth it in the end, when we're making a difference in people's lives. Wishing everyone all the best!!! I know we will all be successful!
