Applications for internships start opening about 5 months before. Baylor and UTSW are the first to open, and internal TH candidates. (For example, the Jan/Feb. 2015 cycle applications opened in September 2014. I think they have opened up now for July 2015.) A few weeks later TH will open what's left to the public, and the HCA hospitals will open as well (Medical City). Children's is pretty specific and should have a date on their website when your application packet is due. Parkland usually opens last, about 2-3 months before. There is also Methodist Dallas that takes new grads. I suggest making an account on each system's job/career site and uploading all of your information. That way, you can apply faster since they don't stay posted for long. Check at least every other day and sign up for email alerts if the site offers.

I hope you got your interview, and if so, how did it go? The reason that the position was gone so quick was probably because of the number of applicants they got. This year, THR opened it's Versant residency positions to internal candidates first, so L&D, NICU, SCN, post-partum, etc. may have been filled by current employees (likely new grad nurses who were working there as techs) before the positions were publicly opened. It's hard to tell from the formatting with the post, but your resume and cover letter looked fine. I talked with a THR recruiter at the career fair at my school and they like to see PCT/CNA experience and volunteering, which you have. I know this response is kind of late, but good luck!

If you are willing to re-locate to Texas, the DFW area has a ton of NICU internship opportunities, but can be very competitive since we have so many nursing schools in the area. However, most of these hospitals hire interns 2-3 times per year, with residencies in Jan/Feb, July, and sometimes October (though keep in mind, the applications are due about 5 months before that). Hospitals that have NICU internships in this area: Texas Health Resources, Parkland, UT Southwestern, HCA (Medical City Dallas Children's, and sometimes some of their other hospitals), Baylor, Children's Medical Center, Cook Children's, and sometimes Methodist. Nearly all of these are Level 3 NICUs. And those are really specific to Dallas, I know there are more hospitals offering NICU internships that are closer to Fort Worth. Usually each unit will hire 1-2 new grads per cycle. And they will usually list that they prefer BSN candidates, because we do have a mix of BSN and ADN schools here, but there is no harm in sending in your application anyway!

What type of set-up does the THD NICU have? During my nursing program I have seen private rooms (Medical City Dallas Children's), and Parkland currently has multiple babies in different smaller rooms, usually 6-8, but are becoming private rooms in their new building. Then Methodist Dallas has about 20+ per huge room. UTSW had multiple babies per room but is also going to private rooms in their new building. Also, if you did the NICU Versant residency, do you have any advice or insight to share about it?
