  1. OMG! San Jac is EXACTLY what I was talking about! Thanks for this clarification! It really helps!!! Angie
  2. Are you sure that perhaps you shouldn't reexamine your desire to become a nurse? You don't give specifics, just say that you "have to" become an RN. Nursing is a field with a high burn out rate, and I'm afraid that if you are going into it because of the salary, or because you feel like you "have to" you will end up regretting it. I'm not trying to scare you, but cleaning pee and poop are nothing compared to some of the things you might have to do. Read some of the stories on the thread about the "Grossest things" Here's the link: https://allnurses.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20151&highlight=Grossest Nursing is not all glamorous, in fact it's down-right hard work. If it's the salary you are after, you might consider another field. Good luck on whatever you decide to do!
  3. I was looking around at different College websites to determine which ones have an LVN to RN program. I'm really stumped in that one of the colleges offers both an LVN Mobility to RN and and LVN Transition to RN. What the heck is the difference between Mobility to RN and Transition to RN? Does anybody know? I'm in Texas. Thanks, Angie
  4. I can totally relate to the bed-making thing. That's what I had the most trouble with in LVN school. Do NOT let it get you down! It DOES NOT mean that you won't be a good nurse. Bed-making skills are important, so I'm not going to try to downplay them, but they are not the most important thing. I don't think I had the body mechanics down right while doing my labs, so my back would be killing me! Not to mention the instructors started timing us and my clinical instructor at that time was a male ex-army drill sargeant (seriously!) and he expected to be able to bounce a quarter off the sheets! I was a nervous wreck! I remember going into the bathroom and just sobbing because I thought there was NO WAY I was going to make it thru LVN school. Other students had no problem, it was like second nature to them! What was wrong with me???? But, I was determined. I went home the night before lab skills check-off on bedmaking, and I stripped my bed down. Then I practiced making that bed over and over again! I used family members to practice making an occupied bed. The next day I went in there, and even though my bed making skills weren't the best of the bunch, I passed. And you know what? I learned that it wasn't THE most important in the grand scheme of things! Yes, the others could make their beds with their eyes closed with one arm tied behind their back - BUT I aced Pharmacology while those same people barely eeked by! Do what you need to do to pass the skill, but from here on out, find your strong points and focus on those. ......and repeat to yourself " I AM a Good Nurse!"! Good Luck! PS. Edited to say: You are going to find too, that when you get in the actual hospital setting, it won't be the same as it is in school labs. Each hospital has their own technique for bed making. Heck, some of them even have special sheets that are Waaay different than the ones you are using in labs. Also, when you get to the hospital you most likely won't be making a bed by yourself. You will be teamed up with another student or perhaps a hospital employee. Don't sweat the small stuff!
  5. If you are referring to Baylor in Texas, and you are a brand new LPN, I think that it's a good offer! Wow! I became an LVN 12 years ago, and as a new LVN I only made $8.00 an hour.
  6. I posted previously about going back into Nursing after a long absence. I am working on doing all of the things that the TxBON has told me I will need to do to reactivate my license. I have applied for my temporary permit, and hopefully will be receiving that any day. I will begin my refresher course on the 19th of this month. In the meantime, I've been scanning job listings and even have had a couple of friends call me with leads. I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead and start applying for jobs, or if I should wait until I'm completely done with the refresher. Since I will have my Temp permit in hand shortly, it's not totally inconceivable that I could get hired. However, I am wondering how I should word my resume. Should I include a cover letter that states that I have been out of practice for awhile, but am working on bringing my skills up to date? Also, what is a good site for LVNs needing assistance with their resumes? Thanks!
  7. Yep! I would have homebirthed if DH would have been in agreement. Per our compromise, all 3 of my births were in the hospital but with a CNM attending. No interventions. It was actually my L & D Clinicals while going thru LVN school that scared me and made me want to forgo a "managed" birth . I think that's the ideology of alot of homebirthers.
  8. I did alot of research into Med. Transcription and Medical Billing/Coding before I decided to just go back into nursing. I found that the very best online school for Transcription is The Andrews School. It's not the cheapest, not the most expensive, but they have a very good, solid reputation in the field.
  9. Congratulations for making the decision to become an LVN! It may seem overwhelming at first, but hang in there! Remember when taking tests that 9 times out of 10, the correct answer is just common sense. Don't try to overthink it. Remember your ABC's - Airway is ALWAYS first, so any answer pertaining to that is most likely the correct answer. Also, the correct answer usually involves what NURSING CARE you can perform to solve the problem, and NOT what drugs you can administer, so unless the test is specifically a Pharmacology or dosage calculation test, try to stear away from the answer that involves a med. Good Luck and keep us posted on your progress! I'm about to go into a Refresher Course in order to renew my license after along period of inactivity - so I can relate to your nervousness!!!!
  10. I'm looking at the possibility of doing QA for a Home Health Agency. Is there anyone here who can offer any pointers? What does your job entail? Does your employer pay you an hourly rate, or are you payed per case? Thanks!
  11. That's encouraging. When I left the field, the most I ever made was $ 11.75/hr in LTC!
  12. I'm curious to see how much LVNs make across the country as I am returning to the field after a 6 - 7 year absence. When I left, LVNs in my area (Houston area) barely made pocket change. I've been pleasantly surprised to see the starting salary being offered in some job ads. Also, post your specialty and how many years at your job. Thanks!
  13. I myself am about to start an LVN Refresher Course after being gone from the field for several years. I was unable to find one that was wholly online. This is mainly due to there being a Clinical aspect to the refresher as someone else already mentioned. Even if you are able to find one that involves coursework online only, you need to check with the Board rules and regulations mandated by the State with which you hold your license. It would be a shame to fork out the money for an online program, only to find that your state will not recognize it. Good Luck!
  14. I am renewing my LVN License after a long absence from the field. The stipulations from the TX Board is that I have to go thru a Refresher Course that includes 80 clinical hours, a CPR Course, and have to complete 20 CEUs before my license can be renewed. I am already working on 2 CEUs thru Western Schools. by taking a mandatory Bioterrorism Course. I will need 18 more Type II CEUs to fulfill my requirements, and the sooner I can get them, the better. Thanks again!
  15. Can someone give me the web addresses of some sites where I can obtain CEUs? I know of Western Schools - what are some of the others??? Thanks in Advance!
