  1. As a home health scheduling coordinator, I understand the need to get a patient covered... but as a caregiver/human being I understand that some people just don't mesh with others & I always tell my staff that if they aren't comfortable in a situation, I completely understand... I think you did the right thing...
  2. I know quite a few nurses, and I have decided that none of them have Stephen Hawking like super intelligence, they're just normal people, and if they can pass nursing school, then I can too!
  3. Oh, and the eccentric MD who stated that the patient's tumor was on her "posterior chest"....
  4. Had a LTC patient whose ER H&P stated she was "covered in cat crap" on arrival... it was a sad abuse/neglect by family member, but that was the best H&P I had ever read...
  5. I found an International Edition of my A&P textbook online for $55, the bookstore wanted $305 new... look up ISBN numbers and check prices online...p.s. most international versions have the exact same stuff in them but are usually soft cover..
  6. something to do with a mixture of the acids & carbonation I guess...I've only seen it done with Coke, but I bet you could use about any soda... diet if the patient is diabetic I would imagine
  7. I would definitely recommend home health or hospice nursing for you right now, lots of one on one patient time and you have the ability to kind of set your own schedule & accept the client load that you think you can handle.
  8. I worked at the same nursing facility for 11 years, never once was I drug tested, not even upon hire...I've never been drug tested anywhere else either... but as a staff supervisor for home health caregivers, I feel like any time someone begins to display erratic behaviors, not showing up for work etc, I may pull a random drug screen
  9. I was thinking back to my last hospital stay (large ovarian cyst 15 years ago) I was in the hospital for 3 days due to a rash post surgery, and to be honest with you, I don't recall being offered a shower, but I didn't ask for one either...sometimes I think that's why they keep you so well medicated in the hospital, then you don't care if you smell...lol
  10. I worked in a facility that went to color coded scrubs for all staff & i threw a fit, mostly because I didn't want to wear the same color scrubs EVERY DAY and I didn't think housekeeping, maintenance & dietary should be in scrubs at all (uniforms yes, scrubs, no) of course it didn't get me far & a couple years later they started letting people wear whatever color they wanted again...
  11. I've been a CNA for 20+ years, usually if someone asks me if I'm a nurse I say, "No, but I play one on TV" with a big smile and then explain to them that I am a nurse aide. I am studying to be a nurse, but there is no way in heck I would want nursing responsibility in a clinical setting.
  12. I work home health, and we rotate who gets the after hours phone...the ones I hate are the person who calls in the middle of the night because they want to ask the nurse if they should go to the hospital because something is bothering them. I always tell them that I am not a nurse (yet) but if they're concerned enough to call in the middle of the night, then my suggestion would be to go to the ER.... or, there is this conversation that happened one Saturday around 6pm: (patients wife) "could you have the nurse call me, I have some concerns about my husband, we haven't been able to wake him since we put him in his recliner this morning and I wonder if something is wrong with him, he hasn't eaten all day and he is diabetic" (me) "have you taken his blood sugar?" (Wife) "not since I gave him his insulin this morning" (me) "well, I will have the nurse call you, you might want to take his blood sugar in the meantime and if it's too high or too low, you might want to be prepared to call the paramedics" ....
  13. I started working on my prerequisites when I was 40, if all goes well, I will complete my Associate RN degree when I am 45, then on to a BSN.... I am pretty sure I won't work in acute care when I graduate, but that is quite all-right for me....
