refusing mandatory O.T.
Being I also am a peace officer right now by law I cannot refuse mandatory overtime.I would be insubordinate and can be terminated and if the state wanted to push it could also be fined.but since we have SB1027 going through the senate in California I am addressing this through our union and nursing board.and am being told if the bill passes there is a good chance it will apply to us and we could file a law suit with the state if they try to deny us.but of course its a battle.I am being told by our union lobbiest that most states will probley have their bill passed individualy before the congress gets it passed that their taking their sweet time with it and there is strong lobbing against it in washington.so I would wright or fax is even better your us senators (not your local ones unless your lobbing for your state bill) and tell them to get off their butts and get it through. In california it is Diane Feinstein who will have a say so.I have written and faxed her twice with no response as of yet.

No I wouldn't recommend nursing
My Daughter is in her third year in college and before she went I told her under no circumstance do I want her to get into the medical field.Lucky for me she listened to me for once. The options and oppurtunities she will have and have already been offered is something nurses dont get with much more money. And as far as nursing being a calling that don't help yor kids when your working alot of 16 hours and holidays. And cant give a part of yourself back to them because your to tired all the time so not only would I tell someone no but h--- no.

What my DON said about getting rid of LPN's
Enough is enough lets all get along. I know I am a good nurse and it doesnt take someone else to tell me otherwise. We all need each other as nurses and I dont care how long anyone has been in school as I have said before it just means its something you have wanted to do for yourself hopefully not to make you think you are better than someone else.I know people that have spent a large portion of their lives in college and cant get a decent job.Its who you are as a person and what you bring to the job. SO LETS ALL GET ALONG!

codes
True Story: about 15 years ago I worked in a Catholic hospital. This women was fine at lunch time and approx 1 hour before the Supervising nurse had changed her IV. I was charting on a post-op when one of the nuns came up to me and stated honey the woman in room 15 is cold and needs a blanket. well when I went to give her the blanket she had been gone not to long after the Sup. RN had been in there. But the MD wanted a full code which we did for about 20 minutes. after wards the nun came up to me and wanted to make sure I had given her the blanket.

nursing and religion
We have a nurse at work that after being there about 4 years can't work weekends due to her religion. and of course she also has multiple sabbath days also.Don't most religions exclude medical from their weekend sabbaths? just curious

Would you get out?
What is interesting is most nurses dont complain about their patients but other co-workers and management. It seems as a whole if we treated each other alot better we would all be alot happier in our profession.Tomorrow I think I'll make it a point to go out of my way to try to help one co-worker having problems(I work a 12 tomorrow so I'll have alot of time to accomplish this mission)

10 things you say at work lay people could get arrested for
bend over as far as possible so we can check you out better.

How would you change patient care?
Nurse to patient ratio is a big issue I feel. You dont know some days if you did your best because your to busy trying to stay afloat.I would like to see states get very involved in step-up programs for nurses,in fact I'm a big advocate in this area, because time and money is a big issue in nursing education.I think insurances should have to give a certain % to these programs.Vacation and retirement plans should also be a mandatory basis of employment. And the hospitals that say they cant afford it I see very few that cant.Team nursing is a must.Hospitals have gone from it and wished they never did that. But honestly I work in a prison and our issues to a certain point are a little diffrent.

What would you do?
I think I would demand a meeting with the supervisors and co-workers to be in the same area at the same time and discuss the importence of team nursing and open communication.I also would state that I would be putting this in wrightng to the hospital administer also or hospital corperation.I would almost bet this type of behavior would immediatly stop.
