I've been offered a part-time 1099 job. The doc mentioned that the previous NP had a business license when working with him. For those NPs working as 1099, do you have a business license? Thank you.

I like using my 5 minute Consult book. I do not work in ER.

I think there is a minimum numbers of working hours as NP for license/certification renewal. You can work PRN or per diem but be aware of the minimum requirement. If minimum hours is not met, you have have to take the exam again. Check with your certification agency. You can also volunteer at a local free clinic, if there is one, to avoid gap and to keep up with the hours.

To BCGradNurse: OMG! Are you sure you are not my twin??? I, too, was a med tech before going into nursing. I don't live in Northeast though. I don't regret it. I enjoy my job but don't always get out of the practice on-time, which can be frustrated.

I too used this book (5-Min Clinical Consult) during clinicals and for SOAP notes during school. Now, in practice, I tend to reach for Amelia Holler's Clinical Guidelines more and use 5-min Consult for more complex issues. Like them both.

I would go to Yale for 3 reasons: 1. To save money (rent $) 2. I don't know how the NP job market looks up North. I am in the South and jobs are not readily available, especially for new grads. By postponing graduation till 2014 may give the job market time to recuperate. 3. Although employers do not ask where you attend for NP school, I would gain self-satisfaction to be graduated from Yale. Good luck with your decision.

Not for ANP but similar situation. Several of my classmates took the FNP mock exam with APEA. Although they did not do well on the mock exam, they all passed the real AANP exam for FNP. From your post, it sounds like you are well prepared. Stay focused and good luck.

Now that I am a NP, do I still need to purchase malpractice insurance for RN in addition to the one for NP? I do currently have RN malpractice on my own. It is up for renewal soon.

If I am to have 2 part-time jobs (family and a specialty) for private offices, am I to have 2 separate malpractice insurance? Also, do you purchase your own malpractice insurance in addition to the one paid for by your employers?

Theoretically, you do not need one; just use one of your reference books. If you do want to have a smart phone, any one is fine; it does not have to be iphone. I mostly use my reference book and occasionally use the free version of epocrates.

This is just from my personal experience. Materials: 1. Both APEA and Fitzgerald disks (a classmate and I exchange them when we were done with the disks). Fitz-Excellent medication review for each system, but a lot of information; can be overwhelming. Inadequate review in the peds section. APEA- Info is broken down into simplest form to understand; good review on peds and pregnant. 2. Fitzgerald review book (love this; very thorough with lots of questions) 3. Leik's review book-concise and easy to read 4. APEA's questions and answers book- did not use My approach: 1. Listen to both sets of CDs once after school is done (I listened to some lectures during school already) 2. Read the entire Leik's review book. 3. Study each body system using the review books that accompanied the CDs 4. Read the Fitz review book and answer the questions 5. Make flashcards of weak areas. Bare minimum, I would recommend APEA's review CD/course and Fitz's review book. I think the sample exam from Fitz's website is made up of the questions in her book and the sample exam from APEA is from the questions in her APEA's questions and answers book. Make sure you make a timeline of your studying goals. Good luck. I hope this helps
