  1. OP, not trying to be sexist or offensive at all but perhaps because you are male it offends you more when another male doctor refers to you as his nurse? If the doctor was female would you feel the same way ? Would it bother you more? Less? Same? Just a thought. I could be totally wrong.
  2. It's literally their job to audit stuff, and to find stuff that they can "improve upon"... Don't take it so personally. They are just doing what their bosses tell them to do, which is just all part of being compliant with JC , to get Medicare reimbursement, or whatever else. It is not personal against you. Yeah sometimes it's BS. Sometimes it's helpful. And it can be annoying ! But it's not personal .
  3. I had a combo dream that incorporated my previous job of waiting tables and my current nursing job: I am waiting tables but all of the customers in my section are patients in gowns with iv pumps and fluids running. They are all sitting at the tables having lovely conversations. I decided to take a break but I fell asleep in the back of the restaurant. When I awoke, I realized it had been 6 hours since I had checked on my customer-patients. To my relief they were all still sitting conversing, and the tech had taken care of them for me...which of course left me wondering, "so do I have to give her ALL my tips??"
  4. Could that patient not file some kind of report that he was being abused? Could you perhaps help that patient to do so? The other witness and the management sound really upstanding. Perhaps a new place of employment is in order.
  5. In a few years when you have more perspective and have been a nurse for a while you will hopefully realize that what your instructor did was not ok. I have experienced extreme bullying from a nursing instructor and I have had several years to reflect. And it's just not ok! ( but that's another story ) There are other ways to prepare you for rude doctors, like teaching students how to talk to a doctor who is being rude. Role playing that scenario and other stressful events. Communication skills. There are other ways to prepare you for stress of the job, like More practice in clinicals and less riiculously long ( dare I say?) care plans. We don't want our kids being bullied in school, and then we go to school ourselves and pay for our instructors do it to us?! We pass it off as "well this will make me tougher..." Does it though? I'm not so sure. What other university instructors are notorious for this behavior ? I don't know of any. Compassionate people cry. It is okay to cry. I have been a nurse for several years and Ya know what, I see people cry everyday, including patients and us nurses. So you cried, congratulations you care about how you are treated. ...
  6. Well how did she get through nursing school? They make it so stressful so you know if you can handle this kind of stuff. It's difficult at any age but I think older people ( ya know, not in their 20's lol) may tend to be more cautious and less ambitious. Maybe a different preceptor would be good so you can have a break and she can get some additional feedback. Where I work we switch around the newbies eventually so they can learn from all types.
  7. Who is this person who assisted you? Surely if you retake it and get an A then you have as good a chance as anyone else. Unless this person has the real inside scoop, and determines everything ( which he likely does not ) then just thank them for the info and keep on going! Good luck!
  8. Percocet also causes constipation, so always encourage patient to use as little narcotic as possible. I guess some nurses feel like there are so many students who try to come on here and get easy answers for school and, they would rather not be the cheat sheet. But, don't take it personally, this is just the nature of this site, and you have to show what you know before you get help.
  9. Once we had a family member take a trash bag into the nutrition room and started filling it up with cans of coke and sprite!!!!
  10. I'm puzzled when some patients (or family) think they are above using the call light, and come out of their room to find you, and interrupt you (even tho they apologize for doing so) to ask you for something. It's a system people! We have a system ! Go through the proper channels ! Please I beg you! Your call will e answered in the order with which it was received ! Also, I'm puzzled by how little blood is actually coming out ( of wherever) when a patient calls you to come to them right away because they BLEEEEEEEEEDING!
  11. Do any of you use a gomco instead of wall suction? Some of our older surgeons order this. It doesn't seem to make a difference as to how effective/quicker/ better the outcome for the patient...but it only has 2 settings so you don't have to question whether you have the suction set up exactly right.
  12. When I get a DNR patient, for the most part, I am relieved to know that if they should arrest, I will not have to torture them with CPR. Possibly more than one time. It is beautiful to be able to ease their shortness of breath and make them comfortable, and know that you won't have to turn around and possibly break their their ribs and defile their body should they stop breathing. Perhaps when you have more experience you will see that too. Or not. Just my opinion.
  13. At both hospitals where I have worked as an RN, the MD usually will hold metformin upon arrival and start pt on a sliding scale for insulin coverage. Then if pt has to get a CT with contrast, we continue to hold it for at least 3 days-and usually until pt is discharged. There are a lot of measures in place so that pharmacy as well as each person looking at pts chart is aware that pt received contrast and metformin is being withheld. What did your teacher say?
  14. This probably isn't the first complaint against the CI. You have to go to someone and let them know how you are being treated, so that this doesn't continue for yourself and the students to follow you. This is a good time to start practicing advocacy!
  15. Why did you feel like you didn't deserve to be in nursing school, and that you weren't smart enough? You obviously were because you made it! It sounds like you are being your own worst enemy, and being really hard on yourself. Try to make sure to love yourself and go in each day and know that you're going to do the best you can with your resources. Also medsurg is SOO stressful and some measure of anxiety is normal. I've been doing it for 5 years and it still stressed me out . I do take an antidepressant, have been on it since nursing school (yeah...go figure) but anyway it has helped me to just calm my brain down a little so I could think clearer and not have so much anxiety . Good luck to you. Best wishes.
