University of Washington (UW) DNP Fall 2018
I'm finishing up my master's entry program and applying to the DNP-FNP. Does anyone know how the program and school really is? I'm curious because I'm at one of the top ranked schools now for my MSN and it has not lived up to our expectations. I've heard that UW has a great program but obviously have my reservations because being ranked highly and having a good name doesn't necessarily transfer into quality education and happy students ...

Search for Johns Hopkins Entry MSN c/o 2018 EDIT: Just realized I need to add people to the group before creating it, so if anyone is interested in joining, please PM me your name and/or email.

Nope. I'm guessing it won't be until next week, since the deadline to accept is this Friday.

Bummer, I'm waitlisted. Not sure what my chances are now, but I'm not going to count on it.

@emara9 - Seattle U is the most unorganized program I've encountered. This also happened last year, and they had to allow candidates to interview via skype. I would give them a call and let them know the situation. I'm almost positive they will allow you to do a video/phone interview.

Direct Entry 2016: Pros/Cons of UCSF, Yale, UPenn, Vandy, Columbia, OHSU, & SeattleU
Great thoughts. I'll throw my 2 cents about Seattle, since it seems to be one missing here. PROS: Seattle is awesome (GO HAWKS!) if you can tolerate rainy/gloomy weather. The school is located right in the downtown area, so it's a fun place if you like to enjoy the town in your spare time. Housing is probably in the middle in terms of affordability. Public transportation is pretty good (at least in my experience). The program is also very short - only 2 years or maybe a little over 2 years and you come out fully an NP. It's relatively inexpensive, especially since the program is shorter. CONS: If the program is anything like their admissions process, beware. I applied last year and got totally turned off by the lack of communication, lack of responsiveness, and overall poor organization. They ran so behind on their interview notifications last year that many had to be done over skype. During an info session, someone asked how job placement was right out the program, and the answer was that there may be some "difficulties" in the first year or two, but it "eventually gets better." Very different from a school like UCSF where job placement isn't really an issue. I asked my interviewer and was told that 50% of the class have jobs lined up before they graduate.

Has anyone heard anything yet? I've emailed the lady asking about it and haven't gotten a response.

@holahawaii - from what I remember, they will only have access to your goal statement and personal statement. I was told this last time by my interviewers because they said they were trying to guess what school I went to from my statements. They don't see the rest of your application, so it would be good to bring up other volunteer work or other things in your resume.

The interview questions are generally the same ones you get from all of the programs. They may change the way they word things, but it's basically the same thing. They're focused primarily on 1) Why you chose to pursue this degree/career/specialty, 2) How you will handle the stress and toughness of the program, and 3) Your goals after graduating. The interviewers will have read your personal and goal statements, so you can refer to them but give more details. They will not have seen any other part of your application though (e.g. resume), and therefore won't know about your work, volunteer, or other experiences, so it would be good to discuss those. I'm not sure if things have changed this year (the snail mail notices really threw me for a loop), but if not, those are the themes from the previous years.

@SBCvicen - you're not the only one. My mail was delivered today and still no letter ... I'm down in LA which isn't too far, so I'm surprised it hasn't arrived. Oh well, so the wait continues ...

Wow, ok. Thanks so much for that info - calms my nerves a bit. As for recommendations, from what I recall, they have an option for either filling out a short questionnaire or submitting a letter.

@emara9 - I've just found out about the problem with two of my recs. I'm thinking we contact the same person that we've directed other questions to, but I'm not too sure. What do you mean by third parties have more time?

@FutureNP2019 - I think getting shadowing experience after you turn in the app is ok, since I was able to get through to the interview round without any direct experience with NPs. @SBCvixen - I've looked through pretty much all the threads from past years and talked to a bunch of people and there are lots of cases where people made it through to interviews after their second or third time applying. However, I was wondering if anyone had made it to interviews more than once and still not been accepted and I haven't heard of it. It might just be that people decide to go to other schools, though. I think most of the people who interviewed with me and didn't get in decided to go to Columbia, Yale, etc. It was pretty impressive. So, as far as stats - not to sound generic, but there's a fairly large range. It's like what anyone would tell you; if you are weaker in one area, you need to be stronger in another. But to summarize: GPA - from 3.2 and up (mostly 3.5+) Pre Req GPA - from 3.7 and up GREs - from about 65% and up, writing 4+ (mostly 5s though) For experience, most people had some pretty solid experience. Some examples: Peace Corp (several people actually), work experience at a clinic, other work in health or job related to chosen specialty, work experience with non-profit, and military. Again, these are just people that I've talked to and it by no means represents the spectrum of people who get accepted.

@futurenp2019 - In my follow up call, they said that overall I was a solid candidate but needed more experience with NPs. I've volunteered at a hospital since the end of 2013, but have been mostly around physicians and PAs. So this year, I'm looking for shadowing opportunities with NPs. I've also interviewed a few NPs to get a better understanding of the profession and have more ways to express why this is what I want to do and why I would be good at it. Hope that helps! Also, I collected some stats from the people who got accepted last year, if anyone is interested.

UCSF MEPN 2016
Hi everyone! I'm re-applying to UCSF this year for FNP. If any of you have followed last year's thread, I was one of the candidates who made it to the interview round, didn't ultimately get in, but was selected for a follow up conversation. So, if you guys have any questions about the process, I'd be happy to answer them.

Johns Hopkins 2015 ABSN & Masters Entry
@snailszy - I am considering the same thing, since I'm from LA. However, I thought that they required a couple years of work as an RN before applying to the FNP program. Is this different from what you've heard?

@lexi822 - did you also interview last year? Do our chances go up at all if we've already been interviewed? @ealips - where does it indicate that you were waitlisted?

I also didn't make it for FNP. Bummer. @KubelkoBondy, if you are curious as to the reasons why you weren't admitted or want to know how to improve for next year, you can call XX and ask him to share what he knows about the decision. I called XX this morning to ask if he could tell me the reasons why I wasn't admitted so that I would know if I apply again next year. He told me that I was one of a few that they wanted to "counsel" and have follow up conversations with because we were very close, but were ultimately beat out by people with better credentials. He said it was particularly tough for the FNP specialty because it is so impacted and there are so many qualified applicants. I am almost in the same boat as you, and know that it is incredibly scary and difficult. I'm sure I've had almost all of the same thoughts you had but I'm planning to apply again next year, so I'd be happy to share/discuss if you'd like. Shoot me a PM.
