that's why i always check my own accuchecks and always check my own vitals for critical patients. it's sad people don't take their jobs seriously. Don't they realize the importance of real vital signs and lab data?

nah...i'm actually not kidding. Family/patients don't have have the right to threaten me. Not to sound like a hardass but if push comes to shove, i'm gonna shove. These people have to understand they can't cuss out and hit nurses in the ER whenever they want. I got into this profession to help people, not to get beat up or be verbally abused by people.

seatbelts should be optional. if someone responsible enough take on driving decides that they don't need a seatbelt, then so be it. Seatbelts for minors should be mandatory however. Just my opinion

ooooh! i got another one. i saw this lady peeing standing up! and i'm sure it was a woman. she was peeing on to a bed pan that was on the floor. The 30 year old son was trying to keep the curtains closed cuz he was kind of embarrassed that his mom was peeing like a man! HIPPA's not being violated is it?

i've been in the ER for 5 years. mostly as a tech. as a nurse however i feel like i would learn more in the CCU or ICU. The RN specific duties are more in the ICU and CCU. I feel like all i do in the ER is give dilaudid, document, give nitro, document, give lopressor document, give some phenergan, document, start iv's, document, hang NS, document. Does anyone feel the same way?

i think as far as MVC's are concerned people that drive drunk should lose driving priveleges forever. also those people that use the fast lane for anything other than passing should be put in prison. I wouldn't weave in and out of traffic if fast traffic was on the left and the slow traffic was on the right. The system is already in place...we just need to enforce the rules...same with gun control but that's a whole other issue. Helmets should not be mandatory

I'm about to take the TNCC course. I was wondering if it is even worth the trip? what does everyone think?

That's a shame. I was a tech/cna for 5 years..unfortunately cna's are very replaceable and the hospital knows that. Good CNA's however are hard to find. The hospital also knows that, but the hospital doesn't care. Cuz IT is gonna whether IT has 2 good CNA's or 2 worthless CNA's. I don't know if you're in nursing school but if you are keep your eye on the prize and don't be like the nurse you're talking about. And if the abuse is bad go where you're appreciated. ICU and Kid's ER's are usually pretty good places to work. Secretarial jobs are kind of slack but you learn a lot of nursing duties by reading and re-reading MD orders. i feel your pain...i shouldn't cuz i'm not a cna anymore but the pain just lingers...dammit make it stop

I know where you're coming from. Do the job, lead by example, don't ask them to do anything just because you don't want to it. Some are just lazy asses and will always be that way...others are just a little threatened by a young nurse....show them you know what you're doing....stay in the trenches with them so to speak and earn their respect....stick with it though.

Life is short. Your med-surg floor will get over it. You couldn't have built that big of a bridge in 3 months...burn it.

Something my preceptor told me. ABC's will save your ass..so will documenting. But in a code situation ABC's will save you.....medications and all that could get you in trouble. If you're not familiar with all that...leave that to the experienced......first go back to basics.....ABC's.....ambu? O2? Suction? code cart? Pulse? IV access? MD? Not neccessarily in that order...usually all at the same time.

Don't freak out with every quiet kid though...When i was growing up, i was kind of shy and didn't say much...and sometimes i was just sleepy. With all kidding aside, emergency medicine by tintinalli is a great reference book.

this is not a lie. i was in triage. this guy brought his girlfriend's bed sheet and asked us to do a DNA test on the stain. He thought his girlfriend was cheating on him. It took every ounce of energy not to bust out laughing and smack that fool for stupidity.

i agree. drunks are a pain but usually no problem, especially after they go to sleep. The family however can often get very hostile. I'm 25 years old and have become kind of bitter and jaded in the 5 years in the ER. Bring it.
