  1. Hi tech1000, I have had similar ambitions and equally thought about the MHA VS MSN Leadership programs. I did a lot of research and talked to some of my managers and other leaders in the field that i know. I will break it down as follows: If your goal is stay within the hospital setting or be leader among your peers (nurses) then MSN leadership is your route, if would like to be a CNO, you will definetly have to add the DNP Leadership degree. MSN will help you get a management position on a floor/unit. With experience over time you could become a director but that is as far is it goes. If you would like to be the administrator or president of a hospital/clinic, then the MHA is for you, it will take you a long time to get there as you may need experience and might have to start out in a rural hospital to etch out a name for yourself. You will also need to network really well and go to a school with good name recognition, and get a good intenship. Hope this helps and good luck to you. I am currently going MSN Management and Leadership with a year left to go.
  2. MBARNBSN is right about this being based on location, i work in a big well known hospital and not all the managers here have an advanced degree, they are not even callled managers, but patient care supervisors, they have an overall manager over them who has an MSN, or are required to have an MSN within 2 yrs of their being employed.
  3. Wow, i think you were actually gracious with this employee. Were i work this is a big no no. At the time of your hire, they actually make you sign a form that you will never bring a cell phone to the floor, later on to a room during cares. I think it was not unreasonable to send her home, even permanently. At my work place, this is grounds for instant termination. Everybody is clear about that, the only time one can use their cell is on their break, in the break room or outside the facility. Everyone is supposed to leave their cell in their locker and be ready to work without interruption, if one needs to call their spouse or partner, there is always a phone in the break room. Perhaps going through your company's cell-phone policy with this employee would be helpful. You did the right thing and should have even enforced stiffer consequences on this particular person:yeah:
  4. Fiona, I do know there is some violence in parts of it, but now i do remember that about a yr ago, there was xenophobia against foreigners, they were attacked & some were killed. I guess it just gets more grim for me. Can't win !
  5. Thanks everyone for your posts, i've begun looking at Africa, Botswana & South Africa are relatively well developed & have good economies based on their gold & diamond wealth. The hospital systems are both private and govt run. SA has the best health care in the whole of the Southern African region.
  6. Thank you so much, this is exactly the info i need to make an informed decision. What is the rest of Canada like? For example Saskatchewan, my situation is such that i need to leave the US soon, say maybe 6-8mths. I could try Australia, NZ, but i have no connections there, Canada seems a little similar to the US in terms of nurse functions. Again thanx for your post.
  7. Thanks, which is why iam on here looking for the correct information, since this is "hearsay" what advice then do u have? That's really whats going to help me.
  8. Hi all, I am a US educated RN who would like to move to Canada, however, i doubt i will make the deadline for the ADN allowance to practice in Canada. I am in the process of registration & awaiting my letter from CARNA. A friend told me it was better to apply as a LPN as things move faster & there are more LPN jobs than RN in Alberta, were iam trying to go.IS this true? If so, can i just switch applications & ask for LPN registration instead? Is there any one with some knowledge on this on here? Please advise.
  9. Hi everyone, i passed on my second attempt using Kaplan. Like many people i did not use any review the first time and failed with at 80 qtns or somewhere there in March. I then enrolled in the Kaplan complete RN review class and the q bank, did all the QT exams and q bank as well scoring anywhere from 55 % to 78%. I also went back to the Kaplan Center and did 1 or 2 readiness tests. I passed with 96 qtns this time around. Overall i think Kaplan was very helpful, the decision tree came in handy eliminating wrong answers even when i did not know what the qtn was asking. I hope this is helpful to someone trying to find a good review program. Thank you Jesus for answering my prayers, it was 3 months of daily nerve wrecking qtns even when i did not feel like, many nites alone in bed for my wife.:) The job hunt begins.. Good luck to all taking the test soon.
  10. You just described me taking the test last week. I had the ear plugs but i swear i could hear my heart pounding . I've never felt that way taking any test in my whole entire life. It gave me a break then shut off at 80 qtns, i did not achieve a passing score.Next time i will go get a prescription for ativan, mt only fear is i don't take any pills for anything, it might wipe me out. better the nerves than falling asleep in front of the computer at the testing ctr!!
  11. I just found out i failed. I went up to 81 qtns, i felt sure i was giving the right responses, thinking through the responses ABC, MASLOW Nursing process, all that good stuff. but i guess i did not do it. This was my 1st attempt. I graduated may 07, makes me think i waited too long. Anyways, i have gone thru the grieving process & am now re-organizing my self to go back ASAP. I never took any review class of any kind, i used the Q.T kaplan, and some ATI dvds/never read the books. Any ideas anyone? Good luck to the other march testers.
  12. Hi all, i just took my nclex today, stopped at 81 qtns. I really think i did well, i did not do alot of those SATA, qtns. i think i had only 2-3, i also had 1 drag qtn. I will post results when i get them, y'all pray for me.
  13. to APEX, As a christian, everything that happens whether good or bad is for a reason, everything has a season and a reason, and "all things work together for good for those who love the Lord," i don't know how but the Lord gives u what need when u need it. We as christians "count it all for joy, when the good or the bad happens." If u don't believe in s'thing, u will fall for anything. So lets all just join Cystal in celebrating this victory.
  14. You deserve it, congratulations!!! I bite the bullet 2morow. You are so right about trusting God, thats basically what iam doing. i feel like i can't study anymore, coz i just find out more stuff that i don't know, and u can't know it all!!! Do i sound confused?Iam!! But congratulations to u, please everybody keep me in your prayers, 2gether with everyone taking the test monday and tuesday or any other day for that matter, good luck to all.
  15. Hai all, Iam taking the nclex next week tuesday, even though the closer i get to tuesday, the more i start thinking i should do more review, but then again, i graduated may last year and this is my first attempt. I just was not in a position to take it earlier due to too much stuff in my personal life. I have been using Kaplan QT, scores between 50-65%, also did the videos/dvds from ATI. I have also been using the saunders Q/A book with cd for the alternate item qtns. I think i will go for it and get it over with. Any input appreciated.
