  1. Getting my acceptance letter to nursing school was the happiest day of my life! A semester and two failed classes later, I am officially OUT of nursing school. I tried a medical appeal but they still said no. How many of you have gone through this and what did you do? Looks like I missed the cutoff for the majority of ADN programs for spring and may have to wait till next fall. Besides being absolutely devastated, I am determined more than ever to get my MSN, especially since the director of my school suggested becoming a CNA or medical assistant. Not that there is anything wrong with either of those (I AM a CNA), I just thought what a thing to say to someone who had told you previously they wanted an MSN! Anyhow what was the application process like? Many are requesting my clinical record and/or to speak with my clinical instructor. That is fine since I have awesome patient skills. But also many say you must be in good standing, which i am with the school itself just not with the nursing school as they would not take me back. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much Q
  2. You are AWESOME for your consideration as I have had a few girlfriends give up their nursing dreams because their husbands were not supportive. There are a few girls in my class whom I would be surprise will be able to finish because of boyfriends and husbands. I am in my first semester and you will basically be on your own with planned time together. One friend has date night Fridays, which on occasion is canceled due to nursing school requirements. In the first semester, we have assignment after assignment which you have to prioritize. I can't study for the test I have on Thursday until I take my test for another class on Tuesday and lets not forget the homework that is due on Wednesday of that same week. That is what it is like in first semester on top of volunteer hour requirements and clinical hours and group presentations. Not to mention the endless hours of practice in the mock hospital rooms in the nursing lab. You can support her by first recognizing this commitment will require ALL of her time. She will be doing this for the both of you so being an ear to listen and a shoulder to cry on (because tears WILL be flowing) would be great. Help with the household chores and maybe fix her some meals and snacks to go. She will have it tough, but with your loving support, she will be on fire!!!
  3. Thanks GL for you reply. My intention was not to lie, but I was wondering if I could start as a new applicant. If anyone would ever be caught in a lie, it would be me LOL. My school does not have an appeals process, it is two strikes and you are out. My clinical instructor has asked me to reflect as well. Something she noticed early on is I tend to mamabear my young classmates which is a character flaw I am working on. I think if I did not know my stuff in a clinical setting that would reflect on my clinical grade no? But think also my work prior as a CNA helps with that part. Now that I think of it, our first med surg test, only one person in my class passed. Thanks again for taking your time to offer your advice, it is greatly appreciated. All the best.
  4. Hey Guys I have just failed both med surg AND pharmacology in my first semester which means I am most likely out of my schools program. I am not giving up nursing that easily. I am going to look for another program, but must I apply as a transfer or can I start a program from the very beginning? The director of my school told me that they would give me a great reference as I am awesome in clinicals and most places just want to know that I am a safe practitioner. I am absolutely devastated, ashamed and Idon'tknowwhatelse. Once the crying stops, I plan to jump to finding another program asap. I am not interested in LVN, because at my age, it will take forever to get my RN. The thing that gets me though, is 3 of us are out and this one guy is an incredible nurse, we just did not make the grades. There is no probation or chance to correct your mistakes, I just hope we will be given a second chance by someone. I live in Los Angeles, so if you guys know something it would be greatly appreciated. Even if you don't live here any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
  5. I love my school and program, but pharm, which is not easy has been made more difficult by the instructor. She emphasizes knowing the class of drugs and how they work but her exams ALWAYS have the names of drugs which she insists we do not need to know unless specified. I am hanging on by my fingernails and I am only in the first semester. My med surg teacher goes over some of the powerpoints and will always throw in "I'm not going to go into that, you can do it on your own." I don't mind doing it on my own because her powerpoints is physiology, what we need is for her to related HOW this translates to test questions and how to think like a nurse. If ALL 4 answers are correct, how do we choose the more correct. I am just frustrated that I have a medical background and more work experience, but these kids are good at taking tests and have great memories, get some of them on the floor and they have no interest which is where nursing IS! I heard that one of the straight A students took off of a clinical because her patient had HIV. I am more than willing to put in the work and have to work triply hard, but honestly the professors have one mode of teaching. Funny thing we took a test at the beginning of the term so they can know what kind of learners we were. It was not a surprise that most of us were AUDIO learners, but they don't allow you to record lectures. I would like to teach one day and I promise to be an advocate for my students instead of an adversary.
  6. Just started this week and turned 51 back in October! From my first class I can already see how my age and wisdom and leadership skills will benefit my class. I am going to struggle hard physically.....at first and then I will be able to keep up with these youngins but they will never catch up to my life experience. Don't sell yourself short because we were raised with an emphasis on social skills and manners, so we have advantages in so many areas. You can do it! We ALL can!
  7. My friend did the Red Cross program, it is short and intense and in her class, a high freak out rate. Since you are here in LA, I did mine at Burbank Adult school, it was 389 bucks instead of 1500 and it lasted a whole semester, so you got to ease into what you were doing. The jobs for a CNA, I have found is mostly in nursing homes or agencies. Most of my class did not find jobs after class, but I my motivation was to be able to put it on my nursing applications. As for the ADN, you have to start somewhere! Most ADN programs have a connection with Cal States which will allow you to take classes during the interim and complete a BSN with an additional year of study upon completion of your ADN. The competition to get right into a 4 year program is stiff and unless you are a 4.0 student, I would focus on the ADN programs. Most of my friends who graduated with an ADN are working and the rest are looking into BSN programs. What programs are you applying for and did you take your TEAS?
  8. I am starting with ACLS the beginning of August. So the 499 does not include the test? I have the book and have starting reading it already. How did taking the test this time with the class differ from the other times and if you don't mind my asking how are the classes structured? thanks so much Q
