  1. I've heard that Grady in Atlanta had a L&D ICU? Not sure if it's true... we need to build one at my hospital.
  2. I always hesistate to respond to such threads. But I will say this... I work at what is considered one of the best hospitals in the world, and I am a male L&D Nurse, that is also a Lactation Consultant, teaches Ob Preparation classes, and is a very sought after nruse. I am also a minority.... Good Nurses are Good Nurses, and patients just want someone that is a good care provider. That being said I have taken care of people that are very conservative (Muslim etc) and same sex couples.... Only had three patients in three years that didn't want a male OB Nurse.... Go FOR IT!
  3. LOL, being a OB nurse that went to OB right out of school and have never desired to do anything else..... To anwer your question are you crazy.... YES, and I believe you will hate it, it will be nothing like Post Partum, probally be overworked, and certainly understaffed, with patients acuity that is extremely high. I work on a post partum floor now and I hear nurses complaining when we have five couplets, that dont' even have IV's, I/O's, or any medication other than Motrin, and to think that some people have 5 or 6 patients on Med Surg that are on drips, what seems like hundreds of medications, dressings, PCA pumps, catheters, tubes etc.!!! YUCK!!!, I would CERTAINLY LOOK FOR OTHER POST PARTUM JOBS! Just my 2 cents worth, for all of you that do Med Surg, I truly do believe that you guys are the stellar nurses, because you must really love it to do that!
  4. Hello, I plan to star the UNCC MSN Nurse Education program this fall, has anyone completed this program, or knows anyone that I could possibly contact that is in the program? I am trying to decide on where I will actually attend in the fall.... Thanks
  5. Do Not Go To Duke, It's A Horrible Place To Work For, Many New Grads Don't Make It Through The 1st Year, Unless Duke Is Paying Their Loans Back, Then They Seem To Be Stuck There. If You Don't Have Significant Loans, I Would Say Don't Go There At All.
  6. Hello all I am interested in knowing what you guys know about Cape Fear Valley HOspital, and living in Fayetteville, I am considering moving there and would like to work in their peds department? Anyone got any advice, are the nurses happy there, patient ratios okay, etc? Salary.... HELP Thanks
  7. Everything I saw online said that you had to have one year of Mother Baby Experience, I have 7 months would I be elgible, who would I need to contact? Can you help me please...Thanks
  8. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have been trying to figure out how to apply for civilian nurse positions at either of these two hospitals ( Fort Bragg and /or Camp Lejeune), from what I understand there is a need for nurses but it's not very clear as to how to apply for these positions.. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  9. it is exactly what you make of it, I did OB rotation last year and now I am a full time OB nurse, I work in a relatively large teaching hospital, and out of maybe 100 or so patients , I have only had 2 that didn't want me to be their nurse, and I'm sure in other units the numbers are the same or higher (medical floors etc), So go in with an open mind and who knows you might just become and OB nurse.!
  10. Hello I am AA male that works OB in a relatively large teaching hospital, while I've been a nurse for about three months now and I have had several patients, only two didn't want a male nurse, but there was a rather interesting incident that happened because of my race I do believe, I was called to be the second nurse in a delivery, and I rushed in as the baby was coming, and the lady (an African American) looks over and tells her mother that I should leave, considering I was an RN now, well when asked if she was uncomfortable with the student being in there a male medical student white, she said he was fine, she was just uncomfortable with me? I was puzzled, ofcourse there was plenty else to do but I just wonder.... To everyone who faces discrimination.. Keep your Head Up!
  11. Well is the staff going ot be supportive of the new nurse, if not he won't hardly make it, is it several of the nurses that seem like there will be conflict, if the staff can't back up a male nurse it's just trouble waiting to happen...
  12. I took NCLEX-RN this morning, and boy oh boy that was test. I am so glad that it is finally over and I got 116 questions. I know for a fact that I go the last question right. It was so hard, and I felt like I knew most of the stuff but there was some I didn't know I will just be so glad when I get my results, It just seems like 116 was just such a bad number, not a little not a lot? Keep your fingers crossed for me!
  13. Male Nurse here heading to L&D and Post Partum, Will be the only male, but won't be the first, Follow your heart, today there are male Midwives, WHNP, Lactation Consultants etc... Whatever you want to do go for it.
  14. no it could take up to six weeks for background check, and three weeks for school verfication, that is UP TO, I'm hoping it will be shorter, I need to go to work!
  15. I'm in NC, however I submitted my criminal background check etc months ago, and it can take up to six weeks to process that, and up to 14 days to process your school verification from the time your dean sent it off. I talked to the guy (Scott) at the BON and he said it would most likely take 14 business days which is three weeks! I'm impatient too!
  16. I am so sorry to read all the bad experiences that male student have encountered in L&D/PP, as I had the most wonderful OB experience, better than all my other clinical experiences, not to mention my OB preceptorship, where I have never had a patient ask me to leave, but several that have asked me to stay, I just graduated Friday and I am ready to embrace my career in OB starting next month, Everyone Keep Looking Up, OB wil hopefully warm up in the near future!
  17. I guess what they were trying to say is that if you had experience at Johns Hopkins then no one would ask what type of facility it was, as to where if you were just at any other hospital. Casual Staff is called off, Full Time people are not called off.
  18. Okay Here I am asking advice AGAIN: I was offered two jobs in OB/L&D as new graduate Male. I guess by being so young I do not know how to make decisions yet, and after I declined one job offer I was told off so bad I need advice about making a good decision between the other two. Hosital One: Large Teaching Facility: 3600 deliveries a year, L&D Only, Can get pulled to PP, NBN, GYN. Male Nurse barrier not broken (1st one). Devoted Christian Manager, Has 16 openings in L&D. 401k/Pension Plan, Sign on Bonus, Relocation Assistance, Every Other Weekend. Took Chance on me hiring me as first male nurse there and the staff is supportive. Hospital Two: Worldwide Known Teaching Facillity: 3600 deliveries/year, Birth Center Setup, No Pull, Male Nurse Barrier Broke, No Openings, only 3% turnover in 3 years, 1 wknd month, No Sign On, One Wknd month, self schedule. Male Nurse Barrier Broke. Highly Progressive hospital. I was cautioned by several professors/nurses that if I was to up and move to other side of country and mention Hospital One I would have to describe what type of facility it was, if I was to move and describe Hospital Two: I wouldn't have to say anything... NEED ADVICE L&D NURSES!
  19. As many of you know I have wanted to be an L&D nurse forever, and I have posted many threads about men in L&D nursing, well when I started to look for jobs I looked in several places, as this was a non-traditional role and I figured it would not be that easy to do, so I applied at like 3 places, and the first place I applied had no openings in L&D, but offered me a NICU position, making the famous problem: you could start there and then move to L&D, because they thought I was a good candidate, and I would be considered if anythign came open in L&D. Well I went on to two other hospitals and was offered L&D/OB jobs, and that is what I have wanted to do since I was ten years old, so I decided to wait around and see if anything opened up at the first hospital in L&D, and now that I am ready to graduate I called today and spoke with the Human Resources lady today, Whom I had told from DAY 1 that L&D was my first choice, and if anything came open in L&D to let me know, well nothing evere came open, so I told her that I would have to decline the NICU offer, as I had been offered an L&D job, well she went into a long spill about how I had done such an inconvenience to the hospital, and how so many people could have had that job, and wanted to know where I was going to work, and when I told her, she said "We'll I have never even heard of that place" and she went back again and I said well my real interest is L&D and you knew that when I applied, and your advice was to look into NICU and then move into it, and she went on to say well dont' think you are going to be considered for L&D now, and I wish you the best, and she hung up! I guess why I am upset is because I drove 45 minutes just to tell the people in person, becuase they were so nice and I wanted to thank them for the job offer.. Did I deserve to be told off?

  22. I have heard this, I don't remember where, but I do believe, it because of all the new grads that go to med-surg, a bunch of them leave, or the ones I have known that graduated did anyway!
  23. To All Graduates in the next couple of weeks like myself, is there anyone here that is feeling just like something may go wrong and keep you from graduating. I have been having nightmares about something just going wrong or some instructor just deciding that they dont' like me and just fail me for something. I am # 2 in my class with only two test left, and It would be very hard for me to fail, but I am just scared that something is gonna go wrong? Anyone else feel the same?
