Addressing Bullying in the ED
We will certainly never get anywhere when we have nurses that discount the whole concept like the above comments. I almost didn't make it through my new grad orientation because my preceptor was such a bully. She's one of those "I know it all, my way is the only way, new grads shouldn't be here, there's only one way to teach," nurses. Every question was a manipulation, every statement an attack. Said things in front of patients that were wholy inappropriate. Nitpicked every tiny little thing. My orientation was 6 weeks over the maximum expected (16 weeks is expected, I went to 22) because she refused to help me get there and pushed me back. I was finally pulled off and given a new preceptor. 3 weeks and I was on my own! My new preceptor even told my manager he had no idea what the previous was on about, that I was doing fantastic. All the time I spent with her and I can't attribute much to her except my still fighting to get my confidence back. Now she refuses to take report when she's my relief because "she knows it all." Patients say she bullies them all the time too. #hownottoprecept

I'm curious what exactly you're studying for? We didn't have anything to study. We just had to read the statement and sign the certificate. Are they giving you an exam this year?

Also, if someone hasn't, get a facebook page going. It's been a HUGE help for us. Some of us will be willing to join to help answer questions too.

I honestly can't remember what we needed a card for. If they do it the same way they did it for us: Primarily 90% of your books will be in a big boxed set, it will be at a several hundred $ discount and come with all the software you WILL need to complete assignments. Then there will be a couple extra books to purchase that are from a separate publisher. This will be all of your books for the program except maybe 1 or 2. The total cost was around $1350. For financial aid purchasers you will have to wait until 2 weeks before the term starts to purchase. Normally there is a $1000 limit per term and you have to pay out of pocket for the rest. Last year they allowed us to go up to $1200, so that may happen again, I don't know. You'll also need to purchase your uniforms and patches, pretty cheap at the bookstore. Name badges can be purchased at the bookstore or any number of retailers publicly. *all subject to change My total expenditure last summer to get started, with all the things needed to purchase was around $2100. Books, uniforms, shoes, background check, liability insurance, physical, lab supplies, nursing tools, things I'm sure I can't remember right now.

The study guide is good. If you can do that, you'll be fine.

Congrats everyone! You'll have to attend a MEC orientation, a Nursing orientation, and a library orientation. There may or may not be a textbook/resources orientation, not sure how they're handling that this year. Get ready to hit the ground running, you've got a lot to do this summer! The math test isn't a huge deal. Pay attention to the directions and check your work. If you don't pass it, you'll have to take NUR135 first semester too. We take a math test every semester, no getting away from it!

Therapeutic Communication
Interpersonal communication is by far my weakest aspect in nursing school. I knew it coming in, I took a course directed at it for my communications prerequisite, and I have been trying on my own to get better at it. I feel like I'm at a stalemate though. I'm halfway through 2nd semester, about to start my 3rd rotation, and I don't feel like I'm getting it at all. My didactic exams show it, my debriefs for skills tests and SIMs show it, and that's been the weakest spot by FAR on my HESIs. My next rotation is psych and I'm worried that this is going to be a huge barrier for me. I know a big piece of the rotation is to help us learn that, but I feel like I'm way behind the starting line of my classmates in this piece. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can work on this?
