help, bedside nursing not for me?
I understand. Im almost a year into my first job at the hospital. Im a float so its super overwhelming too cause i never know where ill end up everytime I come in for work. There are also other options if you dont like bedside nursing. I also have a part time working as a home health nurse. Its pretty easy and less stressful than the hospital job. plus times are flexible and you get to make your own schedule. It would leave you time to be with your family

New Grad Unhappy
I currently work as a float nurse. I float to different med surg/tele units in my hospital. All the units ive been on, have been asking me to stay permanently on that unit. I always get asked which unit is my favorite. But youre right. each unit has its ups and downs. Im still deciding whether I should stick to floating or just stay on one unit. One advantage is definitely staying away from politics of one unit. Some nurses talk about how mean some of the nurses on their units are and I always say," but theyre nice to me." Disadvantage is sometimes we end up with the worst patients because we dont belong to the unit. But then i get used to the craziness and always getting the first admits. The worst patients just become normal.

The first year wasn't so bad... now I'm struggling
I understand how you feel. Im a float nurse and I also work night shift, three nights a week. I go to a different unit every time i go to work. I also love my job but i do always freak out as well before coming into work. Even though Its almost been a year for me, I still feel like theres so much learning and I always feel incompetent. But for me, I make sure I get to spend time with friends and we do something fun. Im learning to just leave work at work once I clock out. I try to excercise and I detox by watching comedy shows to make me laugh and forget about the sad things at work.

are mandatory scrub color-coding in hospitals the wave of the future?
yeah I feel ya. in my hospital actually, were color coded and on our scrub are embedded words. Like registered nurse, and we wear dark blue. for CNAs they wear light green, for respiratory therapists they wear gray. and yeah, patients dont know whos who either. but it helps the staff a ton.
