NICU vs. Peds Med-Surg/Step-down
thank you all so much! I wish i knew more about what type of pt. population the floor that I will be going to has. My hospital is on a different campus then where the children's hospital is and my current hospital does not have a peds floor. all I was told is that they do get children with resp issues, and kids that come out of the PICU and post op. the nicu is a level 3 nursery so they do preform ECMO and have very sick babies. which i thought would give me the ICU experience that would help me transition to PICU, I only thought this bc when i did shadow in the PICU there were 2 babies post open heart surgery and i remember one was only 17 days old. but i will deff. be taking your advice and going to the step down/med surg floor bc i only have adult exp. and i've only been a nurse for 1 1/2 years and those peds assessments skills im sure will help me in the PICU when im able to transition over. you all have set my mind at ease. i have been going back and forth on pros and cons to each and i've been going crazy hoping that i make the correct choice. and i know no one thats in the peds field that could give me some insight on which would be the better floor for me in my situation again, i can not thank you enough for taking the time out of your day to respond to my post!

NICU vs. Peds Med-Surg/Step-down
i have been offered the opportunity to go from an adult neuro floor to my dream job as a pediatric nurse, my ultimate goal would be to work in the PICU or the Peds Hemo/Onc Unit. Unfortunately at this time there are no fellowships being offered for either floor. so i have been given the choice to either go to the Peds med-surg/step-down floor or the NICU. Im unsure which to choose that will help me gain the best experience to then transition to either PICU or Peds hemo/Onc. This is where i would truly appreciate some insight from any and all nurses and esp. those that work in the Pediatric field. with the med/surg floor i feel that I will get a wide variety of of children of all ages and with different Dx, but i will not get the ICU/critical experience with the NICU (level 3 nursery) i feel that i would get a great experience in the ICU setting but will only work with a very specific pt. population i dont know what to do, and I keep going back and forth . I thank you truly in advance! :)

What's it like to be a PICU nurse?
I'm currently a floor nurse on a specialized adult neuro floor. I'm considering switching to the PICU. And alot of what you just said has scared me silly. On the floor we dont have much autonomy. We read the plan of care "the instructions" and we carry it out. Mixed in with feeding the patient, bed pans, refilling pitchers of water getting snacks and etc. on occasion a pt will need a blood trasnfusion or IVIG treatment but thats about as complex as we get. If they go south we call an RRT. I fell as though for lack of a better term the floor has made me "lazy" and "less smart" and I feel as though I've lost a lot of the critical thinking that I learned in school and I feel as though this holds me back from going to an ICU. What is your advice ? I feel so confused

keep my day shift on a floor i dont have a real intrest in or go to nights on my dream fl?
im currently working on a floor thats neuro specialized. just got a position on days! but im not truly interested in neuro. i have an opportunity to go to my dream floor on peds but its a night shift and theres a wait list of 6 yrs to get on to days idk what to do, i hated nights, i never saw my husband and im a newly wed. and i would always be grumpy and short fused bc i wasnt sleeping well and i was always tired on my days off. my husband says in time when we start a family of our own, where i work wont matter as much bc i'll have my home life that will take priority (which i do understand), he says that it's only 3x a week that i work that i should just stay where i am. if we can afford it in the future i'd like to be a stay at home mom or atleast work per diem...but idk what to do stay on days or go to nights any advice? thanks in advance!

How do i re-register for the Nclex RN in new york?
I just took my nclex rn yesterday. It shut off at 257. It ended and i was hysterical crying in the cubical because i knew i had failed. I did the pvt and it let me put in my cc info. I was even more devastated after that. My eyes are swollen from crying so much. But there is nothing i can do but move on and take it again. So how do i go about re-registering? My ATT is valid until september 11 2014 and thats still within the 45 day wait time after i have tested. Do i just pay pearson vue again and use that same att? Do i need to wait for a new att, im so lost! Please help ??

If you werent a nurse, what other career would you do?
I second that! I did pre vet course in high school for college credits and even interned at a vet's office in high school as well. But nursing won the battle in the end but in another life id be a vet. Is it bad to say that I would cry more when interning at the vet office then when doing clinicals in nursing school ?? i was very emotional with the terminal cases with the animals and with the ones that didn't make it out of surgery or had to be put down ?

NS LIJ ED Fellowship 2014
Well i was recommended by someone, but the HR nurse recruiter did say that over 250+ applicants applied in the first 2 days it was up..so i def recommend being one of the first 100 to apply so in a way it is kind of first come first serve. And i possible to get a volunteer position i would 100% do that ! But even though i was recommended it does not ensure that I have a spot in the fellowship. I went on the first 2 interviews and from what i could tell they went well, but there is still a 3rd interview from what I hear and i have yet to hear anything from LIJ or HR. There should be more postings coming up for the fellowship i believe in october and january so keep looking!!! I hope this helps!!!

NS LIJ ED Fellowship 2014
My friend applied and went though the first 2 interviews with HR and the nurse manager.....unfortunately she was not chosen and was told that the candidates were already chosen when she called to follow up.....i don't know if thats just the answer they gave her because she wasn't chosen and they were still looking or if they in fact have chosen the cohorts for the fellowship. I do know that it starts the 4th week in july. Hope this helps! And just keep looking they run the program 2-3 times a year.

NSLIJ PICU Fellowship 2014
Just keep applying!!! I was told that theres going to be another fellowship in January! So keep a look out for any postings!!!! Good Luck ? !!!!! And the first 2 interviews were not bad. The nurse recruiter from HR did ask for a head to toe assessment, but other then that Just behavioral questions like why do you want to be a nurse, negs and pos about yourself etc. And just know your resume well, they like to ask questions off of that.

Wrist tattoo in Nursing
I have a tattoo in black ink on my wrist, i use a watch to cover it up when I'm at the hospital no one knows i even have a tattoo. But i agree with the the post another user posted, think long and hard about it because it will be with you forever and see if a watch would be able to cover it up. Although until its done healing i wouldn't suggest putting anything on it to cover it up

NSLIJ Pediatric ICU Fellowship 2014
Hi Bluecarolina, Congrats on getting the neuro icu fellowship!!! The nurse manager there is great! I have a question, after going through the initial interview with the nurse recruiter, how long did they take to contact you for the 2nd interview? I recently interviewed for a different icu fellowship for LIJ.
