Hey Eluf2366, My nursing school ran a background check but Im not sure which one. Regardless, my expungement did not show up. You should be fine if you're in CA. Good luck.

Hi, I just did this recently. I applied two weeks after I graduated. I know most people in my class applied a bit earlier prior to graduation. In regards to the timeline, I heard back fairly quick- about the same amount of time it took for the rest of the people in my class. Just make sure you have all your documents organized and ready. This is what I would prep before you graduate. Start asking people such as your professors, mentors, co-workers for character reference letters early on. Also start on your letter explaining your charges to the CA BON and detail what you have done since your conviction to show that you arent that person anymore. Lastly, I did not ask my current job for a job evaluation. So don't worry about it. You can ask your co-worker to write a letter for you and its just as good. I would expunge it. Like others have said, depending on your state you might have to disclose it whether or not it is expunged or not. However, when it comes to applying I believe having it expunged will help your chances of licensure.

My bac was 0.14. I'm not sure if it gets taken into consideration. Did your classmates already get their ATT's? The holdup for us were the transcripts, once my school sent the transcripts, we heard back fairly quick.

Hi @Nataliekorn, If you call or go to the police department that arrested you, you can request them to give you copies of your police report that are stamped with their seal. They weren't able to provide me the copies on the spot but mailed it to me for free! You have to make sure the copies are certified or else the BRN may reject your application. For the court records, I did the same thing. I found the forms online but I didnt want to risk submitting the wrong thing so I went in person to the court that I was convicted at and they were able to print my every document related to my case on the spot and stamped the last page the court seal. I had to pay around $20. Good luck! I got my ATT only a week after my other classmates who didn't have to report violations.

Hello, Wanted to share my experience and timeline with the CA BRN. In August 2010 I was pulled over for a DUI. Convicted in early 2011 with a misdemeanor. Expunged my conviction mid 2014 prior to nursing school. Graduated nursing school mid- May 2017. Submitted my application to the BRN late may. Heard back today in the mail that they will not be pursuing any disciplinary actions against me. I should be getting my ATT sometime this week! In my application, I included the following: 1) My personal letter explaining my dui and what I have done to show that the DUI was out of character for me 2) Approx 8 letter of recs from nursing professors, preceptors, and previous co-workers. 3) Certified copy of the police report 4) Certified copy of the court records including expungement 5) Proof of my volunteer hours (over 400 hours) 6) Copies of awards (nursing honor society, and volunteer awards) I was stressed the entire process, even before nursing school started. But I am glad I stuck it out. I'll be happy to answer questions.

Hi, I faced something similar. I was accepted to a BSN program and during orientation the nursing dept chair told everyone that the criminal background check that they used uncovered any misdemeanors/felonies we wouldn't be able to attend clinical. The only way out of it was making sure your charged was expunged. I think you should be ok since you were not formally charged. I wouldn't worry too much, talk to your chair and see what they say. 3rdeyeRN, don't give up! Have you tried applying to non hospital facilities like clinics? I think like you said you just need to get off probation and then you can work at a hospital eventually with a clean license. Please continue to update when you can and good luck!

I almost got kicked out for a misdemeanor. They said that it would be close to impossible to place me in clinical sites if it wasn't expunged. So I had it expunged before the school ran the background check. Make sure to check with your school and to expunge your misdemeanor asap. What state are you from btw?

I was able to attend nursing school after I got my DUI conviction expunged. I am in CA. I'm not sure about the NCLEX, I'm sure I will hit a tall brick wall when I get there. But I am optimistic...sorta.

I barely go on anymore but I just wanted to update. I'm in my second year of nursing school now. I was able to get a lawyer that helped me expunge within two weeks--however it was super costly. Everything worked out for me school-wise. It is impossible for me to work and go to school so I had to resign. The commute would have been insane. Now I just have to worry about my DUI when it comes to the BON, which I heard is even more notorious.

I volunteered a lot. Already have my bachelors degree in a different field. My grades were mostly A's, few B's. I speak another language. And have a pretty high TEAS score.

Hello All. Background: DUI Misdemeanor in February of 2011. Probation ended in February of 2014 which meant that I could have had it expunged. But I was in no rush thinking that I didn't need to. Problem: Went to orientation at a California School and they told me that they might have to rescind my admissions because it will show up on my background check. Hospitals they are partnered with have a zero tolerance policy. Dean said that if I can have it expunged by 6/30/14, I am allowed to stay--- BUT are you serious? We all know how slow the court systems work. I've already paid a hefty sum to an attorney to expedite the request. In the event this does not work, do any of you have a solution? Should I email the dean and ask for an extension? I mean school doesn't start until 8/25/14 anyways but she told me she wants it by 6/30/14 so that she can let alternates in on the list. I already put too much in to have this taken away from me. I've already put in my resignation letter of work, and I've already made plans to move out. Basically I'm screwed. If I had known earlier when I got the acceptance letter, I would have worked on it ASAP. UGH. Please help. Thank you.

Do you have any idea why they did that? It doesn't make sense to me. A preceptor program is so important. It makes not want to attend SF state although it would be cheaper for me to do so since my family is there. I'll have to rethink this. Thanks donut151! Where did you end up going?

Do any of you know if it is true that SF STATE cut out the preceptor program as part of their curriculum? I forgot where I had right now but I remember reading it and how they also cut it from 3 years to 2years. Thanks!

Got the rejection email from rf. I agree, it's seriously unprofessional. They should have sent out rejections early on instead of putting people on hold. Just glad I got into somewhere this year so I don't have to deal with UCLA again next year.
