Clear Liquids -- gastric bypass diet, clear liquids (meaning beverages that you can almost see through). The clear liquid diet starts with sips of water, and then allows foods like sugar-free juice, diet gelatin, boullion or clear broth, and flat (no fizz) diet soda in small amounts, usually 2-3 ounces at a time.

The ones I find to be difficult have a history of GBS, 12 months or greater. Not the ones that just had the surgery.

I did not read any post that led me to believe the poster was not compassionate, nor did any of them state that all gastric bypass patients were psycho. Why would the nurses humiliate you or treat you with contempt?

Do any other nurses deal with post gastric bypass patients and the difficulties they have as a result of their procedure? I find a lot of gastric bypass patients to be extremely rude and demanding. The other day another nurse and I were splitting a room, I had B bed and the other nurse had A bed. The gastric bypass patient in A bed began complaining to her nurse that she wanted regular sugar and jello and not all this diet stuff. The nurse explained to her that the doctor ordered a clear liquid gastric bypass diet and explained the advantages of being placed on that type of diet. The patient did not care she began to yell at the nurse stating that all the other nurses brought her in a regular tray and that she was just being difficult. For the second time the nurse told the patient that she would place a call to the doctor to try to have the diet changed. The patient was utterly obnoxious to the nurse. The nurse walked out and the patient called the nursing coordinator. She explained her exaggerated story to the coordinator. The coordinator must have told the patient that the nurse was handling it appropriately, because I heard the patient say, "you don't see a problem with this?" And began yelling and screaming all sorts of rude things. In report nurses just cringed ever time they have a patient with a history of gastric by bypass, and ask are they psycho? Anyone else find gastric bypass patients to be difficult?

Charge nurse would have a reduced pt load.

If they have work visas that's different, but the illegal ones are the leaches on our society, and need to be deported.

I feel your frustration:angryfire I transferred to a new unit where the techs are completely useless. I honestly feel like they walk around with the automatic blood pressure machines just to look busy, then they are always disappearing. I have only been on this new unit for 4 weeks and I have noticed how atrocious their work ethics are. The problem is there is not enough supervision, and Techs don't respect nurses as their superiors. Also the techs have no accountability, they feel if is not done it will fall back on the nurse. I just did a recent thread voicing my annoyance with the techs and ask for the input of other nurses on how their hospital handled tech assignments. I received 1 reply, it stated "Kinda been there done that, found another area and am perfectly happy. Maybe you should try another area. Good luck". Sad that nurses are leaving floor nursing where are are need the most, just because of Tech issues.

This is why are country is in the state it is in now. We should focus on our own. Like the elderly people who have worked and paid into SS, and now they can't afford prescriptions or run their heater or air-conditioning because they simply don't have the $. You want to help the children just go into the inner city, we have plenty of US CITIZENS in need of help. And as far as the US constitution defines any child born on US soil as an American citizen, it needs to be changed, too many ILLEGAL immigrants abuse it. If they are in the US legally that one thing, but when they cross the bordered and break the law that's different.

I worked on a unit where the unit clerk answered the calls bells via intercom and would forward to patient's needs to the appropriate staff. This worked great. Let the RN/LPN focus on their responsibilities and the techs got to their work. Patient satisfaction was very high and you could actually focus on being a great nurse. The unit I work on now, we have to physically go into a room to answer the call bells, the RN/LPN answer apprx 80% of the bells most of the time the techs are MIA. The job satisfaction on the unit is low, just hired 17 new nurses and techs. Last summer we had the lowest patient satisfaction rating in the hospital. I just started on this unit 4 weeks ago can't wait until my 6 months is up, and I can post out.

I have only been a nurse for three years and I'm already thinking about leaving the field. I'm so frustrated. I feel and observe how overwhelmed nurses are. Most days I don't stop, and at the end of the day instead of feeling satisfied at all I have completed, I think of all the things I should have done. I keep coming up with the same solution to my problem. More support. I spend most of my day answering call bells, most which could have been handled by the tech. The nurses on my unit bare the brunt of their nursing duties plus do a majority of tech work. Does anyone work for a hospital that has had a solution to the age old problem of nurses feeling the techs don't carry their weight and the techs feeling it's the nurses job too.

Why do their children become citizens just because they are born here? This is not right, it puts a burden on our society. Their parents didn't put into the fund, why should they be eligible? These children should not be the US's responsibility, but the county in which their parents are citizens. We should not feel guilty because we can't take care of everyone's child. The ones who should feel guilty are the parents, shame on them for having children they can't afford. What I do think we should offer to them is free birth control, so it doesn't become an issue. That way if they choose to have child, it will have been their choice. In order for things to get better, the US will need to get tougher, as long as we are giving out freebies, there are going to be takers. As sad as this may sound, I feel it is actually a step in the right direction. How many other countries do you think give out free healthcare to none citizens? I have a friend who vacationed in Mexico and was knocked out for a brief moment (a volleyball hit her in the head), when she went to the medical facility they refused to see her, because she did not have cash or a credit card. I feel the United States should take care of it's own, especially people who have worked their whole lives, and paid taxes, like the elderly. I feel sorry for them, the cost of prescriptions is outrageous, not to mention doctors visits. Many elderly people that should take a medication daily are taking them every other day, because of cost. Some have even stopped taking medication all together, because they can't afford it. I hope the money Colorado saves will be put to good use. I feel feel so many US citizens go without basic healthcare and we need to take care of our own first. As a white nurse, I have had several black patients make racial remarks towards myself and other white staff members. It is unfortunate that it happens. I feel sorry for these people. I wonder how many truly wonder people they have passed by solely based on the color of their skin. Racism hurts no matter what color you are. Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless. Mother Teresa I'm sure the same is true for cruel words.

I worked in the banking industry for several years prior to becoming a nurse. I feel the atmosphere was like "big brother watching all the time", but in the hospital I work in, the opposite is true. We have no authority figure. There should be someone in charge (not just a charge nurse, which on our unit is our peer) Our Nurse manager says the Rn's are in charge, but look what happens when we try to delegate, we are called lazy, or were not team players, we are bossy, bullies, etc. If we had an authority figure walking around offering help and over seeing others, she could write up the sleeping nurse, or ask the CNA why she sitting behind the desk, she could tell them go see if the patients need anything, don't wait for the call bell to go off. I feel there is always something that could be done, clean up the patients room, organize the med cart, check the supply room, ask anyone else if they need help, there is no reason why anyone should be sitting idle. Another thing that would help is a list of the top priorities posted for CNA, along with things to do when they have idle time. This would help reiterate to them what exactly their responsibilities are. I feel a lot of our CNA's have the attitude, the nurse can do it just as well as I can. And yes I can, however, can you do my job, NO. I feel (at least in our hospital) they put too much on the Rn's. I do not want to manage the CNA's and unit clerks. I have no power over them, I don't even have input in their review, and they know this. I understand that CNA's have a lot of patients, but why is Rn always at fought when you are overwhelmed. Chances are when you are overwhelmed we are too. And most of the time when one Rn is busy we are all busy, we have no one to turn to either. CNA's need to do what the nurse are instructed to do, PRIORITIZE. Leave that bath or bed change for the next shift, most nurses will stand behind you 100%. I find day shift especially is consumed with those types of tasks, forget it. VS, I&O, getting the PT ready for Pt/Ot, toileting, things like this should take priority. I love being a nurse and enjoy the floor that I work on. The worst part of my job is the hard feeling that seem to exist between the CNA's, units clerk and Rn's, some people spend more type watching others than doing their own job. I think of the hospital team as a baseball team. You need all the players doing their job to the fullest. I can't be a pitcher if I am constantly covering home base, I will only step in when need be. If I cam constantly doing someone else's job, how can I possible be doing mine.

You made the right choice. Some how it always gets back to the nurse. All the nurses that disagree with this, please do me a favor. If I am ever one your patients in need of medical care, please take care of me before putting a patient on the bedpan, a difference in a few seconds could be the difference between life and death. And likewise, if I am one of your patients that needs the bedpan and you have a patient with a medical issue, please see them first. It seems that nurses have a an open job description, in addition to having tasks that only they can perform, they are expected to do everyone else's job. I don't go to a restaurant an ask the bartender to seat me, I don't go up to the hostess and ask them for a beer, I don't walk up to a bank teller and ask them for a loan. I am not saying that nurses should not help out, but I most definitely think we need to prioritize our work. Medical care vs bedpan, medical care for sure. Asking for the bedpan is no different than patient asking for pain medication. The tech has no problem telling the nurse a patient needs pain medication, but for some reason the tech has a problem with the nurse telling them the patient needs a bedpan. Techs always think the nurse is being lazy, they have no idea. I understand that techs have a lot of patients, but just how many are self care. I don't think any one has ever died because they had to wait for a bedpan, or were delayed in having a bath.
