Can you support yourself on agency nursing?
I worked for an agency for all of 2013, and had only one client who needed 24/7 care. I worked 3-4 12 or 16 hour shifts per week. The pay was good and I have military benefits etc through my husband, so no other out of pocket costs. It worked really well for me. My only concern was that it did not require the same skill set as being in hospital, and also being relatively new at this, have decided to try to get back into a facility. Good luck!

Just finished the FCCA finals!
Hey, I was disappointed at first to find that I could not finish these earlier than 8 weeks. But I did ALL of the readings, and with 2 kids and 2 other courses, it was enough for me. I felt like the readings were helpful as a refresher as I have not been working much, especially as I am now thinking about studying for the CPNE and the NCLEX.

Standard Precautions vs. Universal Precautions?
I was reading about this this morning, and came across this OSHA page: https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/hospital/hazards/univprec/univ.html Toward the bottom, it reads: For compliance with OSHA Standards, the use of either Universal Precautions or Standard Precautions are acceptable.

Yahoo!
Passed LS2 and LS3 yesterday! They were my last nursing exams. All I have left are Micro, Fcca, and Cpne. I signed up for this program years ago, and finally in the last year have made a lot of changes to my life that have allowed and inspired me to nearly finish this. I have also completed all but 2 of my pre-req's for a BSN bridge. It has been a crazy year but it FEELS. SO. GOOD.

Canadian thinking about Excelsior
New York is a smooth process, they were always great when I called them. I have a license there too. Actually, because I married an American, I was able to get an LPN license with my RPN one.

Is this book too old?
I came across a sale for "Portable RN" (4th Ed.) and am considering purchasing it.. should I be concerned that it was published in Feb. 2010? Think that is getting too old? I am wondering if it is going on sale bc they are going to come out with a newer version.

If you have kids, when do you study?
When my first son was young, his sleep schedule was consistent - he woke at 8am. Everyday but Sunday I got up at 4:50a, make coffee! ..and then studied 5a-8a. Now I have two boys and the younger gets up very early. I have found a job with a lot of downtime (private duty), but I also make sure they are in bed by 7:30p and study til 11pm. I was a single mom but my hubs is deployed. I work full time and have no friends or family in town. It is tough, but doable. I have been taking FT classes for the last year (5 classes). Just stay calm and schedule everyyyyythhhinng. lol ;0)

Canadian thinking about Excelsior
Hi, I did my RPN in Ontario and am just finishing up the EC ADN program. I would def recommend it but it takes a lot of research and discipline. Totally doable.. but I have not done the Cpne yet! :) I write the last two nursing courses this week and next. EC is wonderful to deal with, and there are a lot of folks with advice on here and around the net. They also took just about all of my Canadian credits as well. I would say just know what the requirements are for the state you are wanting to work in. Some take EC grads outright, and some require extra clinical experience. I have also found that bc the Cdn PN program is longer and more in depth, we are better prepared for the program, and as working as an LPN (I am working in TN). You can do most of the exams at Pearson sites, which there are in Canada (I did one in Toronto). Hope that helps!
