  1. hi all, I'm in california and wanting to pursue my NP. I am currently on probation with the CA BRN. does anyone know of any online programs that will accept RNs while on probation or if anyone has gone through this process id love to hear your experience.
  2. hi all for those that have successfully petitioned for a modification of your probation after the one (1) year mark - what terms were you able to get modified? I'm hoping to get the drug testing and NSG removed but I know thats unlikely just trying to see if anyone has gotten it done before.
  3. Thanks for the reply. Actually I do enjoy talking to patients, that might be one of my best traits. I would just prefer to do it in a more laxed setting such as a clinic or outpatient rather than a hospital. Plus taking care of 5 patients (my floor is 1:5) sometimes gets overwhelming and the expectations are absurd.
  4. Hi all, I have 2 years of psych experience and am currently working med-surg nights (about 6 months now). I've slowly come to the realization bedside nursing is not for me. I truly wanted to give it a shot for the experience and am learning so much but at the end of the day I see myself dread going to work, especially working nights and weekends. Just wanted to know what was out there in terms of non bedside nursing roles. I have a general idea such as public health, psych, education but just wanted to see what I may be missing. For those that are doing non bedside jobs and wouldn't mind briefly sharing what you do, your experience in nursing, and just the general. Thank you all so much
  5. hank you all. especially you, tralnurse4support. nice to know that you're still lurking around on these forums. honestly i'm 50/50 on how the hearing went but i should hear back by mid december hopefully. i'll keep you guys updated.
  6. I know there was a few of you in Ca that were in the same boat or about to be as me in regards to getting a hearing date for early termination so I figured I would keep ya'll in the loop. I've been selected for the hearing that will take place in November to get off probation early. Here is a short timeline so you know what to expect. Aug 1st, 2019 was the time that I can apply to get off early so I sent in my paperwork to the BRN that day. I received a letter from the BRN about Aug 13th stating that they have received my paperwork and that I am now in a queue for a hearing date. 2 months go by and I have yet to hear back so I sent them an e-mail the first week of October asking if I could get a hearing in November (the CA BRN website has a list of all the hearing dates). To my surprise I received a reply stating that there was an opening for November and that I would be attending that. So here we are 3 years later... if all goes well I should be off by December so fingers crossed. I should have already been off by now but my time got extended for testing positive for alcohol.
  7. did you just submit your packet for early term? and didnt have to go a hearing? i'm in CA as well waiting to hear back for my early termination. but i do have a violation so i'm most likely going to have a hearing.
  8. congrats you'll get approved for early termination then. usual wait time is 6-8 weeks after submitting all your paperwork. that's what i've heard from people in my nurse support groups
  9. did you have any violations while on probation? if you have 100% compliance or minor issues, you just submit your paperwork and the brn will get back to you. no hearing required. the hearing is only for people that have violations on their record and are requesting for early termination of probation.
  10. https://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/enforcement/brndecapp-05.pdf
  11. Not sure about other states but this is for nurses in CA. if you go to the ca brn website and type in "early termination of probation" it will pull a page with a list of things that are required... the standard duration is 3 years and apply after 2 years so i'm not sure how it works for people that only got two years initially.
  12. Appreciate it! I honestly don't know if I can take any more of this... I'm miserable at my psych job and want to leave so bad but probation keeps holding me back.
  13. My time for applying for early termination of probation in CA is coming soon. I do have to go to a hearing before the BRN because of a violation. Was wondering if anyone here has gone through one of these experiences or know what to expect and can share their story. TIA
  14. well quite frankly I'm getting sick of playing their game and having to roll over to whatever they say. If I had a different mean of making money I would have left nursing a long time ago.
  15. well the things that he are suggesting are all out of pocket expenses like attending a course at a college on stress management or something. and no I don't have access to an EAP
  16. I'm in SoCal. I had my monitors switched twice... my original one said I can do something as something as going to the gym. But my newest monitor is strict and plays by the rules... he says I have to send him information about the course or whatever class I'm going to take and have him approve it. If I go to the gym I need someone to write on a letterhead that I was actually there taking some type of stress management course like zumba or something. I don't know man this whole thing this is a bunch of ***
  17. For those on probation in the state of California... Many of us are required to do 3 hours of stress management. Did anyone find like a free online CEU class on stress management? My monitor is being kind of picky on what he's going to approve and I don't plan on paying for classes... the irony of all of this is astounding. It's causing me stress thinking that I am going to have to pay for a class on stress management.
  18. That blows. I don't know you personally but I would bet that you probably could have a few tokes here and there (off the job of course) and still perform your duties as a RN. Of course, life doesn't work like that and it's reefer madness when it comes to nursing and MJ. I mean I'd rather take a stoned nurse than a drunk nurse, but you catch my drift... If your RN license means anything to you, then you'll go through the hell that most of us here on going through. Side question though, you said "MJ use without disclosure", meaning that if you had disclosed that you were smoking medical marijuana they would have let you slide? And what led to you being drug tested in the first place?
  19. names have been changed for the sake of confidentiality my original probation monitor, *Bob*, never notified me that I was going to have a new probation monitor. I only found out after trying to get in contact with *bob* via e-mail/phone to no avail. i finally heard his voicemail saying that he has moved on and that we all have a new monitor, *Sharon*. this didn't even more than two months. I had to call my states BON myself, asked them what was going on and they said I finally have a permanent monitor, *Ross*. the lady explained that *Ross* was getting around to e-mailing everyone that he was our new probation monitor but lord knows how long that was going to take. By the way, he still hasn't notified me that he is my new monitor. two things concern me here: when it is my time to apply for early termination next year august, will *Ross* take into account that minus the one positive I've had in the first month of my contract, I have 3 years of clean testing now. I feel like all of this is just going go out the window. my original monitor, *Bob*, knows how hard I've been working to keep myself accountable. also, how unprofessional is all of this?? they expect us to be prompt and maintain constant communication with all that we do but they don't do the same. Just had to get that off my chest. Thanks for reading.
  20. So... According to the PVT, yes you failed. However, as the name indicates, it is only a "trick" and not 100%. The only way you will know if you truly passed or failed is to wait for the official results. Also, there's a search engine on this website where you can find literally thousands of similar posts asking the same question as yours.
  21. Wish I could give you an answer but I have not heard of anyone having to do a hair follicle test while on nursing probation. Is this becoming more widespread now or do only certain individuals get hair tested?
  22. Hey all Long title I know, but as the title says I am a new grad RN that has just started working at a mental health hospital. I actually enjoy working here but I'm hoping to use the experience to transition into public health which is what I wanted to pursue since nursing school. My question is how can I use my experience in mental health to transition into public health? Has anyone ever gone this route before? Or maybe you can point me in the right direction. I'm assuming there's a field of public health that deals directly with mental health, just not sure of how to look for this. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!
  23. I think the reason why you are in your program and at what point in your nursing career you were forced to enter will determine your life after monitoring. Me personally, as you probably already know, am on probation due to a DUI that occurred while I was still in college. As a 25 year old, I'm at that stage of life where weddings, parties, and other events that involve alcohol are common. Yeah I enjoy drinking but does that one DUI truly make me an addict? I don't think so, it was a one time mistake. A mistake. Nothing more or nothing less. My only other criminal conviction is for petty theft when I was back in high school. This program has (and is) literally taking my life away from me. I don't mean just with drinking. Can't travel out of the country, if it's in the states I have to make sure there's a collection site. We recently had a family trip to see the solar eclipse in person, somewhere on the border of Utah and whatever state, but I couldn't even go to that because there was no collection site. My parents are getting old, I want to take them out to travel but can't, I have student loans to pay that I could be paying with my drug testing. This whole program is a scam I don't know how else to put it. To sum it up, I'm going to be the same person I was before this whole monitoring BS started. Not saying that it isn't helpful for others but they really need to individualize each persons case and not just lump us all into one box. As a new grad, I wanted to really get my acute care experience and then transition into public health but right now I'm about to start working in psych. I'm grateful for the opportunity but there's really no correlation with that DUI and how I will perform as a nurse. To be completely honest, if I knew a single DUI was going to land me in this predicament, I would've chosen a different career altogether.
  24. I understand that the rule out clause is usually given before you start probation so that you are exempt from testing if approved by a specialist, however I was wondering has anyone asked for a rule out clause DURING probation? like at the midway point. At the 2 year mark of a 4 year contract, I was planning on asking for a modification of my drug testing through a rule out clause. If you have any experience or know of any stories regarding this go ahead and comment. Like do I get to go before the board and plead my case? Or do they just look at the paper work. Some of you may or may not agree with me, but I don't think that a DUI that happened prior to becoming a nurse should require you to test for 3,4,or 5 years.
