I recently listened to a presentation put on by someone working on recruitment and retention at UMMC; she indicated that all new grads make $28 and change/hr, and that this is not a secret. I believe they also make holiday/night/weekend differentials. I don't get the impression there is any room for negotiation, but all in all, it seems like a decent wage relative to the other major employers in the area, and the benefits (particularly for tuition) are pretty good imo.

I believe impaired parenting is a diagnosis that might fit this scenario.. possibly?

(Never been tested for learning differences, not a 50 minute lecture - 3 hrs). Surprised and grateful for the many views expressed here.

Not that I'm an expert, and I really don't have an answer for you, but someone mentioned to me the other day that there are some projections (mind you, these shortages are cyclical) that around 2017/2018, a wave of the "returned-to-work-when-the-economy-crashed" folks will be re-retiring. Not that this is in anyway the definitive answer to your questions, but I thought it was interesting so I'd share it.

Appreciate the majority of the responses in here, although it does seem like some of you are drawing some sweeping conclusions about my aptitude for school/nursing. Anyway, I will certainly take it up with my professors, who seem generally fantastic. To further clarify - my mindset was that in a medium-large lecture lasting 3+ hours, with lots of laptop screens, eating, and keyboard clicking, I was surprised (and still am) that a quiet hand occupier was flagged as the most offensive thing. I could probably find a stress ball or some such toy to serve a similar purpose, but I guess it just seemed more practical to produce something from my fidgety tendencies. Fwiw, several classmates have also indicated that they find it totally acceptable. Good perspectives on this topic, allnurses :)

Wow.. I am surprised at the overwhelming majority of you that find it rude. To clarify - certainly some of the students use their tech for class related work, but many of them are working on other projects or something completely unrelated to school. Not that it changes this issue. And related to the size of the project, it is quite small - certainly contained in my lap. There are some classes I take notes in, but certain classes that I prefer just to sit/think/fidget. I certainly am kinesthetic, but perhaps I'm incorrectly attributing my need to move during long lectures to this. When not knitting, the fidgeting comes out in nail picking/biting, and rocking, both of which seemed worse than knitting. Thanks for the thoughts. PS - I promise it is not the clicking. I am not a clicky knitter. Maybe the person sitting right next to me might hear the sound of my yarn slipping on the needle, but no clicking. I could totally understand if it were clicking.

Hi folks, so I'm an auditory/kinesthetic learner, and I recently decided to start bringing my knitting to class, to see if it kept me more engaged in the lecture and off my electronics. It's pretty much a silent hobby, so I was surprised when a friend/classmate mentioned that she felt it was distracting and rude to the professor and other students. This is a class with many people on their laptops/tablets for lecture. Anyway, I grew up with a knitting mama who had hers everywhere, so I've never really seen it as inappropriate. Just curious what you all think? Would it bother you? More or less than people using electronics or eating in class? Thanks for for the thoughts :)

JHH is legit, but personally I'd be leery of an agency asking for 25k to move you out here. That is a TON of money to get you a job. Sounds scammy to me, personally. Not that I necessarily know what I'm talking about.

I wore professional attire (a suit) for my interview, came prepared to talk about my background and why I wanted to attend UMSON over the other schools I had been accepted to, why I wanted to be a CNL, and ready to provide the short writing sample. It worked for me. Good luck!

Oh how exciting for you guys!! I think they accepted between 50-60 students for our cohort.. Assuming not everyone takes the offer, I'd guess they probably send out a few more last minute acceptances. Hope to see some of you on campus soon! try not to stress - and start brushing up on A&P as well as dimensional analysis for med calc. Good luck everyone!

Maybe bedside nursing isn't your dream job - maybe you'd like to check out research nursing. I have a background in research, and I've considered it (although the reasons I'm getting out of research are the same reasons I probably wouldn't enjoy research nursing as much as say..shock trauma). It's a big wide world of nursey possibilities out there. I don't think you need to feel a calling or a passion for what you do, as long as you're dedicated and hard working. :)

Just to clarify, it's 'CNL'. I think they look at your undergrad gpa, but I think they look more at your prerequisite course work. Also, since you have a much higher graduate gpa, I wouldn't be too worried. I think the deadline to apply for fall admission is typically around the beginning of the year - but you can apply with outstanding prereqs, as long as you submit your grades when you receive them. If you're worried about not being a competitive applicant, I'd suggest applying for a spring semester entrance - typically, spring admission cycles are less competitive everywhere, because they are usually less popular/fewer people apply. School hasn't started yet, but for now, I'm working a lot of med-calc problems and pre-reading pharmacology. I expect to take a crack at pathophys in the next couple days also.

Yes to Lehne! I haven't started pharm yet but I have the text and...you can pick up the 8th edition for less than $150, but you could also get the 7th edition for like $20...and it's pretty much the same. A couple new drugs, but really... Anyway you can see from the amazon reviews how good the book is, and I am finding it very friendly/informative myself.

Totally agree about the steth, however...if you know her school colors and her measurements, you could also get her her first pair of scrubs. You could get her some super cute compression socks (they help with tired feet, not just veins). All the PPs suggestions are good. I know a cardio III is a great scope, but I am the kind of person who would also enjoy a gift basket (maybe a classic II, and some other goodies..plum paper student planner, clinical pocket guide, socks..). And this probably goes without saying, but I can see from your post how proud of her you are, so a card that says all that stuff should definitely accompany whatever you get.

Also, you need to keep in mind that a poor grade on a prereq class (for me, nutrition was, abnormal psych wasn't) is going to be even more difficult to compensate for. If you did poorly on an art history class, maybe it wouldn't matter so much.. But nutrition isn't even a whole lot of detailed scientific knowledge (at least not the sections my peers and I have taken). How will you handle chemistry or micro? It's going to be a lot more difficult than nutrition.

Oh? What type of planner do you like?

At the top of my wish list right now: cute compression socks, a plum paper planner, a massage, an amazon gift card (textbooks).

I can't answer most of your questions, but I used to be absolutely terrified of needles...I'm training myself to be ok with them. I just keep donating blood and making myself watch the needle. Also I make myself watch when I get shots now. It's working! I also practice putting all the parts of a saline lock together, and I think just continuously exposing yourself to things that give you the heeby geebies helps. Best of luck!

I dunno - my cohort has one, I like it... If it gets bad, I will leave/disband it.. But I've had AN members jump down my throat for suggesting that they can be fun/helpful so...I guess.. It is what you make of it?
