  1. It is good that you want to enhance your knowledge. Since you have experience in the surgical unit, why not do a course on stoma care or wound management...You could also do a degree in nursing. There are a lot of choices in nursing. Once you have some extra special qualification you could apply for the Charge nurse or nurse educator post.
  2. Hope this is of some help to you.... 1. Degree in nursing - minimum. 2. Nurse Manager. 3. 3 months. 4. Motivation- highlight the good values first even when a mistake has been done. Then proceed to correct the mistake. Appreciate their good work always.. 5. Qualities - be approahable, good listener, be in their shoes and understand because you would want them to come to you with their grievances and ideas. They are the frontliners and know something that you may need to learn. 6. Top management. Changes are too rapid. Therefore, it is difficult to lead a group of novice staff nurses. 7. You are able to help make life more easy for your staff. Protect them from abusive situation. Have the autonomy to make changes when needed. 8. This is a difficult question. I have staff and patient from diverse ethnic groups. there is mixed group of staff working per shift. Respect for each one as an individual and their values is essential.
  3. It is a rule generally in nursing not to use words of endearment. We nurses work in a close proximity with clients/residents. These words could cause confusion and mixed feelings in the clients. With permission we could call their first name. In most organization it is a policy. However, it is an exception in the paediatric unit. :dncgbby:
  4. There is no harm in crying.... we are humans, right? I know when I was a student, my tutor told us it was wrong to cry in front patients. Along the years, I realised, tearing when you see your long staying patient die is being human... I realised it was good in sharing their pain and grievances. Nursing is about caring and loving.....We are not ROBOTS! :prdnrs:
  5. I am sorry to hear what had happened...when I started as a junior, I had a good team to work with. I believe our colleagues play a vital role in determining the situation of the unit. Next time you endure situation like this, talk to your team members. Explain exactly why you could not handle the 6 patients. Anyway, if you keep quiet then this situation will repeat. :clpty:
  6. A genuine and loving smile in the morning from my patients...:loveya: The appreciation and credit that money cannot buy.... The opportunity to help those in need..... :hrnsmlys: SATISFACTION !!! :hanukkahstar:
  7. It depends on the individual themself. We cannot under/over estimate one's credibility. I had a charge nurse who was promoted to manager after 7 years and got demoted in a year because she could not cope. However, it is up to the staff to accept the responsibility or reject the offer. In years to come, this scene is going to become more rampant with the shortage of nurses. It is happening in most hospitals as the turnover of nurses is high.
