UofA DNP Fall 2014
I would have loved to apply for this program since I went to college in AZ. I now live in FL so I am considered out of state for tuition purposes and it is just sooo expensive. I wonder why they charge out of state tuition for an online program? If it wasn't for that, I would go in a heartbeat. I was interested in the BSN to DNP (FNP)

Any current University of South Florida NP students on here, ?? for you.
Hi I am also in FL looking for a good FNP program. Is this program 'brick and mortar' or online? I am in North Florida but really would like to relocate anyways so it wouldn't be that big of deal. It looks like the only requirements listed for admission are 3.0 gpa, a BSN, and a good FL license. So does that mean no GRE? How much RN experience and how many letters of reference are required..I didn't see anything listed about that at all. Sorry for so many questions lol. Thanks.

Buying my first book:) APA book question
According to the review dates on Amazon the bad reviews were coming mostly from posts dated in 2009. If you click on 'newest reviews first' then it looks like the customers have been getting the newer corrected version. I guess you could also call the APA directly to see if Amazon (or wherever you are buying it from is currently carrying the corrected version). Chamberlain College of Nursing-FNP...accepted!!!
Congratulations, that is great news!! Glad you were able to start in Oct. I am still deciding where to go and also thinking about where to create the 'zen area' with a desk as well. I have a feeling that my laptop on my bed or the couch isn't going to work out for studying haha. We have a desk and computer in the living room but the kids are always doing stuff on it and its noisy out there with the tv and especially our parrot imitating the kids and the tv LOL.

Any FNP out there that went to a for profit online university out there?
I can see both sides of the coin on this issue. I think most programs are pretty good but the learning process is highly individual. I went the extra mile in volunteering, working as a cna, then getting a nurse extern, etc. in my BSN program so I will apply the same strategy in my MSN trying to soak up all the knowledge and opportunities that I can, especially in clinical. Some of the students in my BSN program put less effort into their studies and clinicals and did not get as much out of it. I think that can happen with any school. There are plenty of skills that I am worried about but suturing is definitely not one of them lol. I currently live on and was raised on a ranch. My grandfather was a vet and taught me to suture (not saying people and animals are the same but dang, cows and horses have tough hides-so hoping people will be easier lol) and do vet care on our own farm animals since I was 12. I was originally going to be a vet so I did all the science pre req like physics, org chem, calculus etc. and got A's but then decided to go to nursing school instead due to life circumstances. I don't feel like I will really get any dumber if I decide to go to online school vs brick and mortar. I was just kinda wondering what the employers would think of an online vs brick in mortar. At one point I was considering going to PA school since I already had those sciences done but ultimately decided that nursing would be a smarter move. I prefer the nursing model vs the medical model. Just an FYI: on you-tube there are some good suturing videos and you can buy pig hides to practice on. I have heard that some people practice on chicken legs. I had to suture a chicken once and it was very easy to pierce through and suture because their skin is naturally more pulled away from the carcass and just attached in certain places. Jeffers Livestock online, sells a couple different varieties of suture needles if you want to get some to practice with. They are pretty cheap. I haven't really investigated other places since I buy our livestock supplies mainly from them if I can't find it locally.

Malpractice insurance for RNs?
Very interesting thread. I hadn't really thought about needing it in the hospital. One of our instructors in our undergrad program also worked as an expert witness. She told us if we had insurance and if there was a potential lawsuit that they would be looking for the deep pockets and may decide to sue the individual nurse as well or instead of the hospital if they could get quite a bit of $. I have heard this from a few other people too but then again I have also heard that it is better to be prepared. I am really wondering what I should do now lol.

Chamberlain online FNP
Did anyone here choose this school for certain? I am wondering about financial aid, how smooth was that process if you used it? I would rather start this fall than January but it might be too late for that now lol.

Any FNP out there that went to a for profit online university out there?
Thanks everyone, this has been an informative thread. I am trying to decide which school to complete my MSN/FNP. I am in the Univ of North FL area and everyone here seems to be big fans of that school. If I went there, they are priced similarly or higher than some of the online schools. I believe some of their courses are online as well. They do seem to have clinicals set up which would be a plus. I did my undergrad at a brick and mortar school but I am really thinking of doing my MSN/FNP at an online school. I could always do my terminal degree somewhere else. If I did decide on UNF then I would probably not be able to start until next fall since the app deadline seems to be in March. I really want to start sooner than that so that also makes some of the online schools like Chamberlain look more appealing.

Florida BON approved ARNP or AGNP programs
From what I understand, The FL Board doesn't regulate post RN licensure programs. I thought they just regulate the undergraduate programs for intial licensure. Not sure though...please post here if you find anything out for sure. I am also in FL and trying to decide which FNP program I want to do right now.

University of Arizona BSN to PhD
Thanks I am out of state (east coast) so I am concerned about the tuition being so high for me otherwise I would probably go ahead and apply. I would have to come up with quite a bit out of pocket that financial aid wouldn't cover. I know U of AZ is a good school. I got my original BSN in AZ but we moved to the east coast due to my hubby's job.

Chamberlain FNP program
Thanks scrubing77. That does sound promising I hope everything works out great for you :) I am not near as nervous about patho and pharm as I am about finding a preceptor lol. It looks like the first year is just the core classes? So then the clinicals start the second year.. I am like you, I would be wanting to get those lined up as early as possible. Another anxiety I have is about the Capstone Project. Is this research and how do you go about it. Do you have to publish something?

Chamberlain FNP program
I would love to do this program just very worried about where I would do the clinicals at. Since its a new program, I wonder if the students would have problems getting places that would precept them. How soon do you have to have the preceptors in place? Before starting clinicals or before starting the program?

Any Nurse Practitioners work in Tropical Medicine?
Hi, I have a BSN and I am planning on going into a FNP role. I would like to somehow specialize in Tropical Medicine. I am really interested in parasitology and infectious diseases. Does anyone know any Advanced Practice nurses who have been able to specialize or work with a group of Tropical Medicine physicians. I have searched online and haven't found much. I would like to find a program that would let me take some of these type of courses but it seems like you have to be a Med or Veterinary student to get into the grad level parasitology or tropical medicine type courses. Tulane has a MPH/MD type program, obviously for doctors/med students etc. It seems like ARNPs are branching out more and more into specific specialties but I can't find much concerning this one.

University of Arizona BSN to PhD
I know this is an old thread but I have the same question regarding if Univ of AZ will accept recent BSN grads without much experience. Have any new grads been accepted into this program?
