  1. Question for those of you familiar with magnet status hospitals... In my area, our local hospital is in the process of switching to magnet status, which from what I understand, requires RNs to have a BSN. I was just given some information that I am not sure is correct: "Magnet hospitals will not hire an advance practice nurse holding a MSN or higher if they did not receive a BSN first." Is this correct? Will they really care if I just go straight from ADN-MSN and skip the BSN? Also, how prevalent are magnet hospitals around the country? Are they gaining popularity or are there still plenty of hospitals that do not desire to achieve magnet status?
  2. Well I just denied a spot at MHCC winter term start. I was alternate #15. So that opens up another spot to somebody else!!

  4. Ahh so nervous for my interviews this next week!! I have one at Lane CC on Monday and then one at MHCC on Wednesday! I am not sure what kind of clothes I should wear and I am so nervous for all the questions in the group setting!!!!
  5. I just got an email from CCC today with the points verification. They said that all points will be final April 11th and then we will be notified by email about interviews which will be held mid to late April.
  6. I just calculated my points for MHCC and I had 50.08. I completed all A&P, all 45 credits, medical terminology, never repeated A&P, took Microbiology, and then 3 points for CNA.
  7. I was invited for an interview at MHCC and I only had a 3.67 GPA, but I am a CNA. I also applied to CCC with a 3.9 GPA on their application and 3 points for my CNA. The CNA must be where they are making their decision.
  8. I got an MHCC interview as well!!!
  9. I am in the same boat right now. When I got hired I was told that they would work around my school schedule and if I ever felt overwhelmed that I could decrease my work days and have more days off. Well I've been here for 5 months and things have been fine until just recently. We have had people quitting and calling in like crazy. And instead of hiring new CNAs, they decide to just keep asking everybody to work doubles everyday. I work the 2-10 shift, and the other night I came in on my only day off to work to cover for someone from 2-5, but at 4 I got asked by my supervisor to stay and work the whole shift. Well then at the end of my shift we were all told that someone from night shift just called in sick and that someone from our shift would have to stay and cover it. All of my coworkers said they could not stay and the nurses tried to tell me that I could lose my job if I didn't stay and work. But I kindly explained to them that I would gladly talk to my boss in the morning if this is how I was going to be treated. I put school ahead of my job. I am not going to be a CNA forever. When I got hired they knew that I was in nursing school and I was hired for evening shift. There is no way they can require me to stay and work from 2pm-6am and then go straight to school all day. So I called my boss at 11pm to wake her up and make her deal with it. She told the nurses that one of them would be required to stay if no CNAs are available.

No shift diff What shift(s) do you usually work? 2pm-10pm What is your current specialty? Long term care & rehab How many years of experience do you have? Less than one year What is your status? Full-time (4 nights on, 2 nights off rotation) Are you a pursuing a career as a nurse? Yes
  11. So I just finished my CNA course and clinicals and got a job working 2pm-10pm shift at the facility where I did clinicals. I start my orientation tomorrow and its only 4 days. Is that normal? And I don't believe I will be getting paid during this time either. How long was your orientation and did you get paid during it or not? Also, any tips for getting organized and staying on schedule?
  12. I'm taking a class through a nursing home that offers cna classes every once in awhile. I am required to work for them for 6 months. But in my area it is pretty easy to find cna work. I can begin working as soon as my class is over before my state test but I can only work 120 days without my certificate.
  13. You should download the Khan Academy app. I have already finished the A&P sequence and that app was so helpful. Also the ITunes U app is pretty cool too. You can listen to lectures and watch power points from classes at major universities.
  14. Well I might not be much help because I'm still a student trying to get into nursing school but I am currently doing my clinicals for my CNA. In Oregon there are two different levels of CNA certification. I'm starting out in a nursing home with my CNA 1 for at least 6 months and then getting my CNA 2 certification and try to get a job in a hospital to gain some experience in that setting hopefully before I start nursing school.
  15. Also for clinicals and for once I start actually working, what shoes do y'all recommend that are the comfiest and provide the best support. I don't want Birkenstocks or danskos because I've heard they take time to get use to and can hurt more to begin with. Would nikes or other tennis shoes work good?
  16. Hello, I just got accepted into a CNA class being held by a local chain of LTC and rehabilitation nursing homes (Avamere- which is in OR, WA, ID, and CO). I am located in Eugene, Oregon. They are paying for the class as long as I promise to work for them for 6 months. I start on monday!! I am currently in the process of getting into nursing school for my BSN, just waiting until January when I can apply. Does anybody have any tips for new CNAs starting out in a nursing home setting. I also have not heard anything from the employer about what shifts they are hiring for and if for FT or PT yet. Any tips on what shift I should take if I have a choice? I will only be taking online classes until January so I have flexibility in my schedule. Any suggestions or comments are welcome!
