  1. I'm not in the US. I've got all the information I need from the previous posters.
  2. I appreciate all your responses, I made it clear that I will be speaking with her when we return on Monday. She is a fabulous student when she's awake and working. I will take the week to think about what I will say and how I will say it. This is a learning experience for both of us and I intend to hold her to the guidelines outlined in the preceptor / student relationship. I know I need to speak up because I am in a position of mentorship. Thanks again everyone!
  3. We are off for one week and returning on Monday
  4. How should I go about starting the conversation??
  5. Hello to all you wonderful nurses! I'm seeking some advice on how to deal with my nursing student. She is in a pre-grad placement with me for 12 weeks before she graduates. In the instructions from her school instructor, it states that there is to be absolutely no napping on breaks and to arrive on time every shift. My issue is...she's great with patient care and the patients like her, she does meds competently and assessments...BUT...we are working 3 - 12 hour shifts this weekend and Friday night was ok. On Saturday night, she slept in our lunch room for 2 hours, got up so a nurse could go in and nap and then slept at the nursing station for 1.5 hours. Tonight (Sunday night) she came in late, which I didn't know of until 6:15 pm (start at 7) because she went to a wedding at 1pm and was late from being there. THEN, I had a nap for 1.5 hours and got up, she then went to sleep from 4-currently sleeping (it's 6) and we finish at 7. What should I do! We as nurses at my hospital are allowed to take nap breaks as long as there is enough registered staff coverage. However, clearly outlined from her professor is no naps! I'm upset about her lack of accountability for taking this seriously. And she probably expects me to still sign her complete hours (which I plan on not doing) please help!! What should I do?? How should I approach her about these issues? I'm a very nice person and I hate confrontation... Thanks in advance xo
  6. That's amazing lol! Made me laugh :)
  7. I've decided I'm not going to give it. Reason being is my husbands ex wife is psycho and will likely try to blame something on me, regardless if something is wrong or not.
  8. Doing my very first male catheterization on a real, live, human. 85ish y/o with bladder ca and retaining. Set up sterile field, explain procedure, clean, pull back foreskin, in it goes. Connect foley to drainage bag and attempt to replace the foreskin. What? Why isn't it going? Continue pulling, pulling, poking and pulling. Face getting red and hot. Preceptor pulls, pulls. We both pull and push and ahh there it goes back over. Fine and dandy! Then the patient lets out a little laugh and says, "Dang, ladies, you made me feel like I'm 25 years old again!" Laugh awkwardly and almost die. I still tell this story at work to the newbies :)
  9. It's my step son he is 13 and is getting weekly pollinex injections for allergies
  10. Hello! Just. Quick question. I am a Registered Practical Nurse in Ontario. Am I allowed to give a family member an injection? We will be on vacation and I am the only one qualified to give injections.
  11. I'm never giving my patients cookies ever again! LOL!
  12. Today was a nightmare. I work med-surg and had only 4 patients today. I don't want to go into too much detail but I was run off my feet. I had 9 million orders, needy patients, and one very very sick patient. I couldn't keep up with the chaos around me. I work 12 hour shifts and I didn't get a break until 1, and didn't chart a damn thing until 4. I feel exhausted and like I missed stuff. I feel like my patients didn't get the attention they needed because of all I had going on. When I gave report I felt sick, like knowing I missed something. Thank goodness I have excellent coworkers who helped me immensely. I just am sidelined with how bad my day was I won't sleep tonight and have to go back for another day tomorrow. Have you had days like this?! Where you take one step forward and 19 steps back? I was barely keeping my head above water today and feel like I messed something up, I just don't know what yet sorry for the vent but I had to let it off my chest. Do you guys have any advice about how to deal with those shifts that leave you flabbergasted? How do you deal with the days you just want to forget even happened?
