  1. I've been working as PRN for a little over a year. I generally work 36 hours a week and for the most part could work lots more. We can sign up for shifts ahead of time which is what I usually do. Some just call in to see if they are needed that day. I have one friend who works 50-60 hours per week. I don't know what it is like where you are from but around the holidays work is a bit more scarce due to low census. No matter where I pick up shifts I always get cancelled at least once a week but the closer to the holidays the more I am cancelled. The flex nurses at my hospital just know it is part of the life of the flex nurse.
  2. I know just how you feel. I finished my ADN May 2008 and thought I would never go back. Just got my acceptance letter this morning for BSN program and can't wait for the fall to start.
  3. Not sure who they are. I think I know who CL is. Send me a private message with the names and I will let you know if I know anything about them. I graduated from HFCC in May 08
  4. Oooops!?!? Just noticed this thread started in 2005.
  5. The book was good. But the 4 day course was not worth it at all. It was mandatory at my school but it was a complete waste of time. If your sick stay home.
  6. Don't make the mistake that I did and buy all of the books- required and optional. You an always add to you books later on. With all of the assigned reading its next to impossible to read any of the optional. The one optional book that I recommend is an NCLEX review book. It is never to early to start studying and it will help with your tests. Good luck the time will go by really fast. I'm second year and only 21 days till the end:yeah:
  7. ] Hot Stud- I do have to agree with parts of quote #2 -you should be able to ask questions and not get blasted for it. If its info your asking for please please ask away. However, look at yourquote #1 your entire post is loaded with hearsay. Ask a question of nurses like will our wages drop by $10/hr and your bound to get people riled up. You cannot really believe that you can throw these "hypothetical" questions out and then stand back and plead total innocence. Also Hillarys plan is not "socialized medicine". True socialized medicine is that which is controlled and financed by the government. Her plan calls for health coverage for all- but it does offer choices for all. You may either continue with your current plan, be given the option to choose from health plan options, or a public health plan. It is not the asking of the questions that got you into hot water it was your choice of words and images that did. Connotation means everything especially in the written word.
  8. Where in the world did you get the idea that wages would drop $10 per hour??? Senator Clintons plan aims to lower costs, improve the quality of healthcare, and most importantly make sure that everyone is insured. Her plan is a seven point plan that aims at tackling rising health care costs. In short her 7 points are: 1. Focusing on prevention 2. Using technology to increase security and accessibility to medical records 3. Streamline the healthcare of the chronically ill. 4. Offering individuals and small businesses access to larger insurance pools 5.Improve the quality of care by driving down costs 6.Get prescription costs under control 7.Reform medical malpractice. Nowhere in her plan does it indicate that costs will be lowered by lowering the wages of nurses. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/72229.php You also state that you cant find info on how much nurses make in "socialized " countries such as Canada- a quick search on the internet gave me the information. Here are a couple of links to give you that information- one is the manitoba nurses union contract and the other is a link to Capital Health in Manitoba. The nurses union contracts salary range for 2007 is $20.28-$38.74. Capital Health salary range is $26.13 to $30.63. Sounds pretty on par to the US if you ask me. http://www.nursesunion.mb.ca/pdf%20files/CFNU_ContComp(7-16-07).pdf https://erecruit.cdha.nshealth.ca/psc/EXTAPP/EMPLOYEE/HRMS/c/HRS_HRS.HRS_APP_SCHJOB.GBL It sounds to me as if you are not a supporter of the Senator, as I most certainly am. That's fine with me but please before you start making generalizations about the issues please become informed first and state the facts.
  9. Also try some of the fire departments in your area. I had a friend in the same situation and she got hers with the local fire department. Good luck
  10. The easiest way for me to remember is Subjective= pt stated (symptoms) Objective=Observed (by yourself, labs, during assessment, etc)
  11. Just talked to Lorraine regarding wait list at HFCC yesterday as a matter of fact. Letters will be going out beginning in May for the fall semester. They are beginning with those placed on the waiting list in Dec 04. There are 220 slots to fill for the winter semester and somewhat less for the winter semester (I'm not sure what the actual number is-didn't ask). I was placed on the list June 05 and from what she tells me I have a chance of being admitted this fall. The procedure is they send out letters in groups of 50, have an orientation and find out how many are attending then go on to the next group of 50. So it really depends on how many students accept. I know students who have gotten in sooner than a year and heard of someone who claimed to take 3 years and still hasn't been accepted. I do find that hard to believe though I have a feeling she hasn't even been placed on the wait list just taking the requirements to get on the wait list. I will pm you on a great instructor for psych and some not so great A&P. Good luck on the NET.
  12. The net is not that bad at all. Usually I freak when it comes to math. There were some very basic algebra questions on it- but mostly just general math. I did pick up a book from the college bookstore to help me study. You may want to see if your school carries it as well as borders, barnes & nobles etc. It did cost around $37 which I thought was a bit pricey. But honestly it didn't really help other than give me an idea of what to expect on the test and as a short refresher on the algebra. By the way passed the net with a 92. Good luck but really it isn't that bad.
  13. I am 48 and just finished my last prereq for ns-chemistry. Right now I am taking a&p 1-will take a&p2, med term and pharmacology while waiting to get into nursing program. Make sure that you talk to someone at your college. Each one has different requirements, tests etc. You may not need to worry about your act. I didn't have to take it at my school. There was a math test that I had to pass though and they provided study guides. You are definitley not too old. Good luck! you can do it.
  14. Hi there- New to the boards and I love this site. I am hoping to get into HFCC (in Dearborn, Mi) nursing program. I will be taking my last pre-req next semester and then will have to get on their waiting list. Anyone here go to Henry Ford or have any idea how long of a wait there is? I am expecting it to be at least a year, but hoping it won't be any longer. Thanks :)
