  1. @nodakstudent fine by me!
  2. Im in! I can hardly believe it, email came about 1130 PT!!!! Yay!
  3. I played softball at a junior college and then a red shirted at university for a season during my first undergraduate degree, I miss playing sports so much. It was a great outlet!
  4. I am a student at Oregon Health and Sciences University. I work as a caregiver and tutor underclassman. I am the Breakthrough to Nursing Director for the Oregon Student Nurses Association and the President of my schools chapter, it is very stressful I am totally with you but I love it! I wlll be at convention in April, looking forward to it so much. A good friend of mine is the COSP Chairman and ex officio officer of the NSNA BoD and she keeps talking about all the great stuff that is going to go on at the convention and I am super excited. Plus a little sun and warm weather wont hurt either!
  5. I was told by one of the HR reps that the essay is worth over half of the total points, but I do not know how much the resume is worth.
  6. I have a couple friends who have done this externship and they where both placed in ICU level care, one was on the neurotrauma unit and the other adult ICU :) I talked to one of the HR managers at the NSNA Mid Year convention this year and he said your placement depends on what you clinical experience has been in school. So if you request ICU and have hours of clinical to back that up it sounds like there is a good chance that you could be placed there!
  7. Hello! I havent seen a thread yet for students applying to the 2015 extersnhip at Mayo Clinic so I thought I would start one and see if there is anyone out there who is in the same boat as me! My name is Kayla and I am student from OHSU (Oregon Health and Science University). I submitted my application today and I am excited but so nervous, even more so than when I applied to nursing school! I hope to meet a few other students who are going through the process too! How are you feeling? What does everyone know about previous programs and applicants? Are you nervous too?!?!?! Good luck to everyone!
  8. As a reply, OHSU doesnt care if you use OHSU (at least we got clearance from our campus) in the name of the Facebook group. Just make sure you ask someone at the school before doing it!
  9. @JaymeeL it is a federal requirement for colleges to offer major health insurance for full time students, if you have comparable insurance already you can waive the fees and insurance through the university. If you dont have insurance now there is really no way to get around it, you can buy it through the public market place (like cover oregon or whatever it is now) or you can purchase it through the college which is usually cheaper...but still spendy and you can use scholarships/loans/grants to pay for it. It is all apart of the health care reform act.
  10. @efda2rn No problem, I won't stalk your guys thread all summer it is just part of my job to help with transition the incoming class...you'll learn more about our mentor program and what not at orientation as well! The book list will come with the packet I believe but I can tell you that the first 2 terms you are buying a lot of books. Once you have them you use the same books for all three years so after the first two terms you only buy 1 or 2 more through the whole program. It helps to plan accordingly with financial aide. They dont want to give you everything right away because it is so important that you relax this summer, and enjoy time with your friends and family. The first year isnt overwhelming but it is a large time commitment and that can burn a lot of students out. My little piece of advice is to enjoy this summer and be super excited about what is coming in the fall it is a huge accomplishment! There is really no way you can prepare by studying, if the schedule (which you will get in the packet) is the same the first class you take is not anatomy or biology based and isn't really anything you can prepare for it based off of your prereqs, so soak up some sun! Anyone can PM me if you have more questions, I do want to leave this thread to your class. As far as the FB you would be surprised...build it and they will come :)
  11. @efda2rn you have to establish your own facebook group if your class chooses to do so, the instructors don't neccasarily endorse facebook because it hasnt worked well for every class but it is AWESOME for mine. Each class has their own but someone (me for the current sophomore class) creates it and shares it with everyone they know. I think we had about 16 students on the page before orientation and almost everyone is on it now. There is a Monmouth Student Nurses Association page that you will be invited to after orientation as well. I am currently helping a little (just writing a letter to the new class) with the packets that you will receive in June with all the info you need about supplies. We needed a blood pressure cuff, stethescope...dont over think this just get a littman classic, pen light, the scrubs we wear are forest green I have dickies and squint brands, shoes have to be black or white, and you need a thigh length white lab coat, the OHSU patches can be bought at the WOU book store. This information might change for your class but all the classes attending now this is what was required of us.
  12. Shades very but dark green is important...some of the guys have carhart and those are more forest green but no one cares!
  13. I am still the only one who follows this I think because I am the MSNA President and OSNA Breakthrough to nursing director...you'll learn more about our Student Nurses Association if you choose OHSU-Monmouth. Most of use have Dickies, Greys Anatomy, Koi, Or Winkies (sp?). There is a bigger selection at the scrub shop in Lebanon than at Lancaster. I bought patches at Western in the book store but there is always a bunch of graduating seniors who sell patches and gentle used scrubs to new students at the beginning of the year. I have bought 4 pair and 2 lab coats (one extra lab coat and one extra pair of scrubs to leave in my car as back up). For a stethoscope I just bought the basic littmans its all you need in school unless you are hard of hearing. Any other questions feel free to shoot them my way.
  14. @missjordie and @2ndwind I go to school at OHSU Monmouth and have clinicals with a lot of Chemeketa students. They are great students and there is no doubt that Chemeketa offers an excellent education. I just have some advice on choosing between a ADN and BSN program and why I choose the BSN path. First, a lot of new graduates get hired where they do their senior practicum or integrated practicum (what they call it depends on the school) Chemeketa really uses two hospitals Salem and West Valley in Mcminville. Salem is a Magnet Status hospital which means they are working towards having all RNs with their BSNs and are not hiring ADN new grads (their may be exception I am sure but overall). West Valley is an extension of Salem but I am not sure their status. Also Chemeketa has a partnership with Linfield (not OHSU) which again is a great school but the bridge program is incredibly expensive so when it came down to it the 45,000 I am paying at OHSU is not that much more than it would have been if I did the Chemeketa-Linfield bridge. Also, @missjordie the final year at OHSU is really unique and why most people choose this program. The first term is in a class called Leadership where you are pretty much being prepared to step into leadership roles in the work place and the last 2 terms is called your integrated practicum where you spend 6 months working full time on the floor at a hospital (or other site depending on your desire and available placements. In that 6 months you earn almost more hours of clinical experience than many of the other programs in the state throughout their entire program. Most people I know who have stayed local get hired at their practicum site after graduation. During this time you come to campus usually twice a term to meet and touch base. Whatever you two choose will be great, just really think about what is going to be best in the long run and about what kind of clinical sites each school offers because that is truly your best exposure for getting a job at the end of all this.
  15. Congrats to everyone who has been accepted to OHSU-Monmouth! I am a current student and I hope to see you all on campus next year! Enjoy this moment!
  16. 2nd Wind Monmouth had 109 applicants which is less than half of last year, and you are on point with the reason it has been a state wide decline in applicants. The thing is then job market has made a huge turn around in the last year and I mean huge.
  17. @2nd wind last year I got both a generic email from OHSU and then one from Monmouth specifically, each campus does it differen. A friend of mine at OHSU-PDX received a letter that stated her application was complete then one 4 months later saying she was accepted and thats it! Last year Monmouth was the only one who interviewed so I know it was really different then! Our interviews where not until late May so that is awesome that they are so early this year. I am current sophomore at OHSU-Monmouth, Good luck!
  18. CONGRATS! My advice is to read a good book, enjoy time with your friends and family, take care of anything that is going to come up during your academic year that can be done ahead of time, find easy meal preps (freezer meals are great). I am not saying this to be dramatic these are things I would have honestly wish I would have done before hand and plan on doing over summer break :) I did not do any academic prep, I am in a top 10 ranked BSN program and was not one of those "4.0" students and I am doing well. It might depend on what they expect from you but dont worry to much about prepping academically ahead of time-if you do honestly some of it might confuse and stress you out more than help you...that is advice from a classmate.
  19. I am at OHSU-Monmouth and I have had to take out student loans, I was granted some though FAFSA but not enough. I took out 17,000 this year and most of it was through Wells Fargo. Tuition was 13,000 the rest was for extra living expenses and books. I have spent about 1000 on books but we don't have to buy but maybe 2 books for the rest of the program. There are a lot of scholarships available, but most go to second and third year students after they have established there nursing GPA. I have applied to over 60 scholarships for next year and am waiting to hear back in the next couple months. Dont let cost scare you, we have tons of students that have growing families, it is totally doable!
  20. For the OHSU-Monmouth campus I was notified that I received an interview in march I believe and my interview was either the end of April or beginning of May I believe I had my acceptance call on the 8th of May. I think I was notified within weeks of the due date that my application was complete and would be considered.
  21. I am in OHSU BSN student my overall GPA was not horrible but not great but my prerequisite GPA was very high and I got in, dont give up! If you need to just retake a few prerequisites, the average prereq GPA for my class was 3.87 I think so if you can get around there you have a good chance. OHSU is moving to interviews too which mean a lot so practice your interviewing skills.
  22. Im a student at the Monmouth campus and we have 32 students, I think that is the most of all the programs. This year our campus isnt doing an essay only an interview and I know that sounds absolutely terrifying but if it wasnt for the interview last year I am not sure I would have gotten in purely on my essay. It is a huge part of the points and I am a better speaker that writer. Just a thought :) I think there where 220+ applicants that had complete applications and 78 where invited to interviews. I think some of the students counted at the Ashland campus are RN-BSN students. They currently have an on campus bridge program there...for now. I could be wrong though.
  23. I am a student at Oregon Health and Science University up here in Oregon. There where 250 applicants for 32 seats for my class with an average PREREQ GPA of 3.79. What is your perquisite GPA? If it is above 3.7 with healthcare experience you would have a good chance at a lot of the ADN programs up here and possibly some of the BSN. There is an OHSU campus in ashland so that wouldnt be to far from California, and OHSU was ranked as 7th on 2013 list of BSN programs so it is a great school, most of the BSN and OCNE-ADN programs up here have NCLEX pass rates between 95-100% for 2013.
  24. I am a current OHSU student and had similar stats as you, Linfield didnt even give me a chance because my accumulative was 3.61 but I was accepted to OHSU with a prereq GPA of 3.9. At least last year OHSU did not look at accumulative but Linfield did, make sure you have that the right way around since applications are so spendy. Good luck!
