Hey guys! I'm looking for some more info about the Air Force Health Professional Scholarship Program for Nurse Practitioners, specifically, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners. I've seen a few threads talk about the AF HPSP, but they were kind of general. I just started a 2 year accelerated Advanced Practice Nursing program at a pretty prestigious/expensive school (no idea how I got in) for students that do no have a BSN and was hoping to hear from some other people who have done the same thing and participated in the AF HPSP. Has anyone out there done the HPSP with the AF while going to school to get your Advanced Practice Nursing Degree in Psych-Mental Health, or any other APN specialty (not CRNA)? One of the questions I had was about salary after you graduate and you begin your active duty assignment. Do you follow the general pay scale of an officer or do you make more money since you are a board certified licensed health professional? If you come in as an O-1, following the pay scale, you'll only be making around $35,000 even though you are a health professional. Whereas, in the private sector, new grads for psych NP right out of school, can very well be starting out making $110,000-$120,000 in a lot of places in the country. The national average for psych NPs right out school is around $85,000. My school is really expensive so having the Air Force pay my tuition would be great, but if I'm only going to be making under $50,000 for my 3 years of active duty, I'm not sure it would be worth it when I can be making a lot more money in the private sector and just paying off my loans with the money I'm earning. If anyone out there has any answers for me, please post them. I have a lot more questions too, so hopefully I can find someone out there who has been through this. Thanks.

Sorry if someone already answered this, but has anyone been officially rejected yet? Its sounding like everyone who hasn't been awarded the scholarship yet, still has it saying "Under Review" on the website. I was wondering if anyone out there who met all the qualifications and at one time had their application listed as "Under Review" now has it listed as being rejected or whatever wording they use to reject us.

How did you know about that website? That's crazy it has all the reviewer instructions. I'm with you, if you haven't got a letter yet, let's hope your financial aid and student loans are in order. That sucks...

Thanks Nurzz. I had never seen anyone on any of these sites with an EFC above 5500 get the scholarship. Mine is barely above 5500 so I'm worried that I won't even be considered since I'm not in the 0-5500 range.

Has anyone ever got the scholarship that had an EFC above 5500? Just curious. Thanks.

I was stoked to apply for the NHSC Scholarship, but found out that us Pre-Specialty guys are ineligible. This is from their Application Guide: Applicants are ineligible if they are: (1) Enrolled in a physician assistant (P.A.) program and are specializing in areas other than primary health care. For example, P.A. programs with a surgical or emergency room focus; (2) In the pre-professional phase of their health professions education. For example, taking undergraduate pre-requisites for admission to a P.A. training program; (3) Enrolled in a nursing Bridge Program. For example, RN-MSN, BSN-MSN, Direct Entry, Graduate Pre-specialty or Entry to Practice programs; OR (4) Pursuing a doctoral degree in nursing. Really sucks...

Thanks guys. No, I didn't get that email and I was freaking out about it. I was reading forums from 2011 and 2012 and it seemed that everyone who got that email ended up getting in. I figured since they didn't take time to send me the email that I was getting rejected.

I think mine went alright. It was pretty casual. They didn't ask any crazy questions or anything that I wasn't expecting. They asked questions that you would pretty much expect to hear at any graduate school interview. As hindsight is 20/20, I of course thought of things I wished I had said after the interview was over, but what can you do. I'm sure the interview is just a portion of what they are looking for in determining who to accept as our essays and academic performance give them a good picture of who we are and if we are a good fit for their program. My advice for the interview would be just be yourself and have fun with it. There's really nothing you can do to prepare. You know why you are applying and what you want from the program, so be confident and let them know. They said that decisions would be sent out the first two weeks of March. Good luck to everyone.

How'd it go? Mine was last Friday so I know the relief you're probably feeling now that its over. Well, relief as far as the interview goes...The waiting for the decision is much worse.

You guys look to have awesome stats. I took the old GRE and I got 670 on Verbal, 760 on Quantitative, and a 5.0 on Analytical Writing. I have BS in Biological Anthropology and BA in History with a 3.8 overall GPA. My prereq GPA is 4.0. I spent a couple of years as a service missionary in Southeast Asia and Africa. I really don't have any healthcare employment experience or volunteer experience in a healthcare setting. After looking at you guys, kinda wishing I had now...
