Study tips/Exam help!
Thanks for this thread. I am also typically an A student but am currently failing my 2nd semester of nursing school. I did great on the first test and quiz but last week I bombed a test (D-) and today I straight up failed a Pharm test worth 30% of my grade. I've been in with the teachers and they tell me to re-learn how to study. I'm kind of freaking out because we have a test every single week. I'm going to try this and if you have any other specific tips for studying these vast amounts of material in 4-5 days in between labs & clinicals.. please share!!

Unsupportive fiance...not sure what to do
I agree with a lot of the previous posters. If he isn't supportive now, he likely never will be. Ladies tend to hope for the best and wait/hope for these types of guys to come around and a lot of times they don't. Appreciate what time you had together. Enjoy what you've learned about what qualities you do and do not want in a partner...and move on if he doesn't "get it". Nursing school is all-consuming and you don't need someone messing with your success. Good luck!

Ebooks? Some, all or none??
The textbooks are huge and heavy. Think you are gonna study everywhere? Nope. Try as I might, I can't seem to read my Fundamentals, Med-Surg, or OB books in bed. They are too big! Even "curling up" on the couch when I am tired of sitting at a desk is pretty difficult. As soon as I get comfortable, invariably I will need to get up for something and it's a pain. I really wish I had gotten eBooks. If you are looking at eBooks, the iPad mini is awesome. It's just the right size. I load all my powerpoints, course calendars, NANDA pdfs, and syllabi on it. It's one of the most useful gifts I have received for nursing school. Also, I have been shopping around for eBooks and have found that a few are cheaper on Amazon and a few are cheaper from the iBooks store (through the app). Good luck!

I Need a Stethoscope
I have an MDF MD One (MDF 777) and love it. It can be found on AllHeart for $54.98 and comes in a variety of colors. Unlike the Littmann, it is constructed with stainless steel. It also has clear ear pieces so you can see if they need replacing..and.. (drum roll).. if you register your steth you get free parts for life.

First Day of Nursing School
Thanks! This morning we woke up at 6:30, got some Dunkin' and walked over to the dog beach. Drinking coffee while watching dogs attack the waves was very relaxing. Today I am going to bake brownies, pumpkin mac & cheese (it's healthy...) and clean the house in my jammies. I feel a lot calmer.

One more week before I sign over my life!
So I picked up the rest of my books on Friday.. I didn't think there would be a bigger book than the Fundamentals one. Has anyone picked up a Maternal Child Nursing Care textbook? It's even bigger! Monday is coming too soon. I am slurping town ice water because the glass of wine I had to calm my nerves made me more nervous.

First Day of Nursing School
My first day is Monday. I am so excited and nervous. Actually, I am a bit surprised at how anxious I am this weekend. Though it is my last weekend of "freedom", there is still a lot to do. I feel that I should be getting extra sleep, making sure all my ducks are in a row, and ensuring that all the household chores are done for the week.

How much poop/puke/cleaning of bodily fluids is there in nursing school?
I personally believe that cleaning and shining up the poop is the best idea ever. Let's make the poop feel comfortable! XD

I need tips on how to create outlines & create an organization system
This is a great topic! I took a Nursing Success Skills class and it was VERY helpful. I find that using a variety of note taking strategies is a good idea in the beginning. Eventually you will find what works for you. For me, flashcards aren't so great. I make cornell notes for my vocabulary. I also take all the chapter tests at the end of the chapter, do all the review questions, AND any questions throughout the chapter. I hand write them and keep them to review later. When I finish, I go back and look at what is wrong. I go through and write down each incorrectly answered question, look up the answer, and write it down. This helps me understand what I need to work on as well as find out why certain answers are correct or incorrect. I tend to use cornell notes, outlines, and SQ3R the most. I also have a variety of highlighters that help me visually separate categories of notes. In regard to time management, you need to make a schedule and stick to it. Inform friends and family members and remind them that your study time is SACRED. You have to be kind of selfish about it unfortunately. I live in an apartment and if there is outdoor noise I cannot control when I NEED to study.. I leave. Having back-up study locations accessible 95% of the time is important. I have at least 3. One of them is the Starbucks at my local Target! It has a HUGE space where no one ever goes! This also may sound stupid: I have found that while it is important to be comfortable when I study, I can't be TOO comfortable. Pyjamas.. yes! Study in bed.. nooo. No matter how interesting the chapter I will fall asleep! Here are a few tidbits that might help you out: Reading method I use: The SQ3R Reading Method Time management strategies: Time management Popular note taking systems: Note Taking Systems - Academic Skills Center: Study Skills Library - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Good luck and I hope this helps!

Organizee/Planner
I have been using greenroom planners since I started back to school. You can usually find them at Target for about $8. Why? -Ecofriendly -Tabbed -Big blocks to write in for each day -Room in the back for notes, contacts, and resources -Variety of sizes ...and most of all.. very pretty!

Brevard Community College Fall 2013
Hooray! I got all my stuff for Certified Profile done except for the flu shot. I am wanting to wait until the last minute for that one in case they release a more recent one closer to 08/20. Anyone started collecting books? My dining room table is now a haven for big piles!

Anyone working on "Extra Goals"?
I am a bit larger than I "should" be and am looking to lose (or be well on my way to losing) about 20-30 pounds. I am right there with Lori, I am going to need the extra energy and less stress on my knees & ankles. I am attempting to drop my fast food addiction (gross, right?) and develop and exercise addiction. I am making better choices, working out more, and just trying to build healthier habits for the long run.

Laptop or paper/pen notes in class?
I do paper and pen notes but try to have the eBook companion in class. Best of both worlds? People complain about using the print outs too but I love them. I use them as an outline.
