I am so stressed out over this. Any help would be greatly appreciated- I'm just worried because I've worked so hard and don't want to screw this up! So I live in VA. My professor told us we need to apply for a license in our home state first, and then if we end up with a job in another state we then apply for a second license. I found out this is wrong. I figured I would work in VA anyways, so I thought that was fine. I ended up getting a job in DC, and I called the BON and they said to apply for licensure by endorsement. Since I can't get a refund from VA, they said to just take the NCLEX in VA as planned and then apply for licensure by endorsement. I am taking the NCLEX in 2 weeks and I now realize I am not sure if I have enough time to do the endorsement by mid August when I start working- I have heard it's complicated and can take a long time. I researched it and it seems complicated and lengthy. ANyways, my question is, does anyone know if I can just start over- forget about my VA application (I don't care about the money anymore), and just submit one for DC, get a DC Approval to test, and call pearson vue and change the BON I am registered under and pay their fee? I know this is complicated- but has anyone been in a similar situation? Applied for a license in one state, and got a job in another? I would call the BON but they are closed today and just want some reassurance. I shouldn't have listened to my professor I guess. I've worked so hard and I just wanna take the test and get my license! I have to have my license by the time I start. Has anyone applied for licensure by endorsement by the way? Did it take a long time?

Hmm..yea I wouldn't hide it, I guess even if it means not getting into the military. It was "diagnosed" when I c/o feeling breathless when I woke up in the am (I think it was more due to the old carpet in my room and my cats). It went away at college. Last year I went to the dr and she said something about "my asthma" and I was shocked because no one had ever told me that before. So I don't know how reliable of a diagnosis it is. I did take singulair for awhile.

INOVA I know of for sure for new grads possibly children's-- that sticks out in my mind not sure about washington hospital center

Yea, I don't know what to do. Some places say you can get a waiver, others you can't. Plus I don't know if it is different for nurses vs actual combat soldiers. I will definitely be honest about this, but I hope it doesn't ruin my chances. I wish I hadn't sought medical attention for it, I could have lived with the symptoms and I'd be in the clear.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any nurses in the navy or air force with asthma. I emailed a recruiter and they said to contact a recruiter and I have heard waivers are given. I have never had an asthma attack and I wasn't diagnosed until 2 years ago. Just wondering if anyone has any info on this.

One of my classmates was suspended for bringing motrin to school. I understand there is zero tolerance, but I think schools take it too far. It's hard to sit in class all day when you have killer cramps. It seems like there should be bigger things to take care of, like illegal drugs or narcotics.

It seems like most of the hospitals around here have a 2 year contract..I wonder if that is just for new grads because of our training costs?

I am considering joining the military. I will graduate with my BSN in less than a month. Does anyone have any advice on which branch to join? I have heard the air force treats its employees better, but that's about all I know. I just wanted to hear some personal experiences. Thank you!

Kamna- thanks. I guess I just have to be patient. It's just frustrating. I apply for jobs at CNMC and then the next day I get an email that says the opening you applied for has been filled. I did go to the job fair but this is the the first "real" job I've been looking for and I was completely unprepared, although I did give my resume to someone. I had no idea about the thank you notes, and interview prep skills until I talked to a relative (ugh I felt like an idiot). This is my first degree so I suppose compared with some of the other applicants I am not as qualified. I am getting so discouraged but I guess I just need to remain motivated. I just wish there was someway I could make myself more marketable. I am willing to do anything at this point. Thank you for the advice, I just need to keep at it!

Yes the job situation here is terrible! I have had no luck, same as most of my classmates. VHC and INOVA have no positions last I checked. It seems no one wants the new grads! I have looked in every area-I'll take anything at this point.

The new grad situation in this area is not very good. I went to the open house at children's a while back and they don't have many jobs available. I didn't hear anything about a sign on bonus, although that would be great. I think the problem is that most of the hospitals, including children's (last i heard), have their budgets frozen and can't hire many new employees. Combined with the high number of new graduates in this area (catholice, GMU, NOVA, marymount, georgetown, to name a few), it is going to be hard to get a job. most of my classmates and myself have had little success so far. i don't know the situation for experienced nurses, but new grads are having trouble. i wish i had better news to report

I was under the impression that IV systems are supposed to be needleless now (like when giving IV push drugs). Is it common that some facilities are still using syringes to push drugs? I'm a student, so I might be confused. I thought hospitals were supposed to use the connector types.

I am in the process of applying for new graduate jobs. Once I submit my application, should I follow up? I feel like my applications are just going into a big pile and I want to follow up, but without seeming annoying or pushy. Is it typical to call and check on the status of your application? This is my first "real" job and I don't know how the job process works. If I should call, would I just ask for the nurse recruiter and what should I say? I just want the hospital to know I am extremely interested in the position...I keep getting those auto emails from the places I've applied for stating that "so and so job you've applied for has been filled". So confused! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I will graduate this May. I really, really want to work at Children's (although with the poor job market, I'm willing to work somewhere else) and just have some questions about the hiring process. I went to an open house and assumed it was a tour of the hospital, however, I did an onsite interview. I don't think it went bad- I just wasn't expecting it. I haven't heard anything since so I am assuming I most likely didn't get it- although I don't know if they are waiting to fill the positions. Anyways, I just wanted to talk with someone who knows about the hiring process there- I applied online to another position but am afraid my application just went into a big pile. I am graduating in May 2009 with my BSN. I am applying to some local jobs, but I would also like to apply to some jobs across the country in California. How would I go about doing that- would I even be hired? I am looking for a change and would love to move there. I am also confused about the process- I understand I can apply now before I graduate. Should I do this over winter break, or wait a little longer? What do I put on application to indicate I am still in school? It seems most of the openings now for new grads are for Jan/Feb. When are the openings for summer usually posted? Thank you- I am kind of on my own for this.

I'm not sure which to get. I graduate in a year so I want to buy one I can use when I graduate. On the Littman website, it says the Carido III is for cardiologists, respiratory therapists, etc- but I've seen nurses with the Cardio III. Any advice to which one I should get? If I don't have to spend the extra $$ for the Cardio III that would be great, but if it's the gold standard for nurses, I'll get it. I tested both out and liked them Thanks!

One last thing-- the stethoscope market is soo confusing. Should I get the cardiology one...the classic?? Help!!

I have the stethescope I got for free from school, but I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same as those cheap disposable ones they leave in the patient's on contact precautions rooms. I can barely hear anything out of it! I was wondering if anyone could recommend a better one. I really don't want to spend more than $100 at this point (still have a year left, and broke), but I could do up to $140 if it makes a big difference. Any recommedations? Thanks you.
