Spring '13 & Summer '13 Class load
Your Spring Semester sounds completely fine! I'm doing two science classes during the spring...haha! Your summer schedule looks a bit intense though! At my CC, due to budget cuts in CA, we can only take a maximum of 8 units so I'm debating whether taking General Chem or Microbiology...hmm, we'll have to see! But doing two science courses during the summer sounds super intense! Good luck! (:
-
What 2 science classes would you take?
I would suggest BioChem and A&P II. That BioChem class sounds equivalent to my CC's "Chemistry of Life" class which is General Chem/BioChem/Organic Chem, which is what I'm taking next semester! I'll be taking Microbio over the summer! EDIT: The Chem of Life class is a pre-req for Microbiology at my CC! (:

Spring schedule too much?
I think you'll be fine, but like the above posters have mentioned, only you know if you'll be able to handle it. Since you don't have a job and just are focusing on school though, I think you'll be fine! I have a similar schedule! I'm going to take A&P II and Chemistry...ah, wish me luck too!!! Take care! (:

A&P if you've never taken chemistry
I'm currently on my first semester of A&P and seriously...at least for me...knowing Biology and Chemistry did not make a difference to me. Perhaps because of the basic stuff that we re-learned was just review...? Honestly, I think it depends on the person, but to me, it made no difference whatsover. Hopefully the professor you get will teach you what you need to learn Biology/Chemistry background wise, which is what mine did. She even did a raise of hands of how many people took Biology/Chem before A&P and almost 2/3 of the class failed to raise their hand....lol, and not a lot of people have dropped the course, we're all pretty much Pre-Med/Nursing students, haha. Good luck!!! PS-I'm taking Chemistry next semester and THEN taking Microbiology next fall...I'm sure it'll be fine. (:

Spring 2013...Advice Needed!
Hello everyone! (: I hope everyone is having a good start to the week! Tomorrow is my registration date! (Ek, I have priority registration because I'm in my college's honors program). Anyways...I was wondering if you'd like to give me some advice on my upcoming schedule. Any advice/comments would greatly be appreciated. Some background about me: I attend a small community college in California. I used to attend UCLA but due to financial aid (long story), I had to leave before I got my B.S. and came back home. I became interested in nursing since I was at UCLA. I was a Pre-Med major, hoping to go onto Medical School, but like I said, due to financial matters, I couldn't complete my education there. While at UCLA, I used to work at UCLA HealthCare System and really got close to a bunch of nurses around the hospital. I truly enjoyed seeing them help patients and such...(I could ramble on for days!) When I came back home, I decided that I would purse a nursing career, and hopefully head back to UCLA for a nursing job (thankfully I have friends inside the system!) later on when I (hopefully!) become an RN. My community college offers an RN program, but now they implemented a once a year application...which really defers me even further! Regardless, I wish to complete my pre-reqs as efficiently and quickly as possible. This is my proposed schedule for Spring 2013: -A&P II -Intro to Chem (since it is a requirement for Microbiology) -Pre-Calculus -Nutrition (I need this class to graduate in June and get my A.S.-which gives me further points on my Nursing application) -English 101 I would be taking the first three courses TTH and the latter are online classes. EDIT: I forgot to mention that essentially, I have Spring 2013-->Fall 2013-->Spring 2014 to complete my nursing pre-reqs which are: -A&P I (IP--Fall 2012) -A&P II -English 101 -MATH 96 (Algebra) or higher (I placed into Pre-Calc w/my assessment test!) -Microbiology (pre req for this class is Introduction to Chem 100 OR Chem of Life 107) *My college typically goes for 4.0 applicants only, and there's no waitlist. To apply you also have to have your pre-req classes already completed and on your transcript (no IP grades) so I have to wait until Fall 2014 to apply. Other classes I have to take: -Psychology 101 (already completed) -Political Science 101 (AP credit) -Humanities Course/Multi-Cultural Course (already completed) A lot of people would consider this schedule super hectic and such...but I'm single, I have no job (unfortunately! I'm still looking!), and have no financial responsibilities or kids. Also, I'm the type of person that if I have a "too easy" schedule, I will procrastinate like no other. Currently, I am taking A&P I and a Business English course...(I had a late registration date because I had to re-enroll into the college...) and it's horrible, I have to push myself so much to stay on top of my homework and studying. At UCLA it was so much different, every day, come back from lecture/lab and straight to studying...it's such a different environment. Some of you wonderful posters are going or have gone through Nursing School...and I was wondering if you could perhaps share some insight? I'm sure the courses/clinicals are much tougher than this schedule, so I want to see if I'm going the right route in preparing myself. I don't want to be TOO surprised when I finally get to NS and struggle to get my time management together...haha. Also, are there any tips/recommendations you would give to me in preparing myself for NS/nursing career in general? Perhaps some study books? Thanks so much for reading all of this! Ever since I started lurking on AN, I've really been hooked! I appreciate everyone for trying to help us as best as they can! Have a great day! (: -SakuraChan.

UCLA hiring process
Getting any job inside of UCLA is tough! I used to work as a work-study student there and seriously, the only way you would get a job is by being "in" AKA you were transferring departments/already in the UCLA system. Best of luck to all of you! I know that UCLA seriously is always on the look out for new nurses (seriously, I used to work in UCLA HealthCare System!)

State of discouragement, just feel like venting!
I can honestly say that I know 1000000000%+ infinity&beyond what you're feeling right now. This is going to be long...but this is my story...LOL... My dad's side of the family, when it comes to the females, all of my cousins have either: dropped out of high school, graduated and then got married, or got knocked up. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I understand people have different...thoughts (lol) after high school. I have two older brothers (I'm the baby) and they decided not to continue onto higher education. I decided to go onto college. My initial goal was to get my Ph.D in Clinical Psychology and become a Psychologist. After being at UCLA (I was a Pre-Med/Psychobiology major) for about a year and a half, I couldn't do it. I worked in one of the Graduate Admissions programs (for UCLA's Med School) and I know how crazy it is, I also did some research in a couple of labs...and that was too crazy too. I kept going to UCLA because I had my job, but financial aid acted up and suddenly, I didn't have my work-study job, they had to let me go. So now...I've had to move back home with my parents (have been here since June), can't get a job anywhere and it is so frustrating and depressing at the same time. I don't have anything against taking classes at my community college--heck, I get my tuition paid, I only pay for books (and gas, lol) but it's so frustrating that some days I just don't do anything. I decided to become a nurse because I'm dead set on being able to help people, and reading more about the experiences a lot of our members here on AN have...it's just amazing to me! I can't wait until I'm finally in NS, LOL! But I can't imagine how I would be feeling like this in actual NS school...that sounds too intense. I guess the difference between you and I is that I've been diagnosed with depression...and it explains why sometimes I get into this "funk" where I'm not motivated to do anything, can sleep for hours, not eat for days....and it's a challenge, let me tell you! My parents, and my mum especially supports me in everything and anything that I decide to do...but my parents are so stressed out right now with this financial situation, it makes me feel so useless a lot of the times....and yet there's not much I can do about it. All I can do about it is study REALLY hard to get into this darn nursing program at my college which now only has once a year application submission... Whew! This has gotten super long....but honestly, I just want you to know that you are not alone, and you will be in my prayers. It's actually kinda relieving to see someone in the same situation as myself....(as bad as that sounds, I KNOW!) Keep your chin up! Everything happens for a reason and if you need someone...feel free to PM me! We can give each other motivation!!!!! -SakuraChan.

Spring 2013
Chelsea...a lot of people (probably OFF the forums) would think we're crazy for taking two science classes. ;P I know A&P II is going to be difficult...and if I decide to take CHEM lab....oh gosh, LMAO. I'll be in class literally from 8AM-8PM. But we can do it!!!

Spring 2013
Aah! My registration date is next Tuesday and I'm freaking out! (I'm in the honors program at my CCC too!) Luckily, I contacted my Honors counselor and thankfully (SO thankful) she's having walk-in appointments tomorrow.... But anyways...my schedule: -A&P II -CHEM 101 OR 107 (not sure if I should take Chem of Life -its called like that at my CC-) -Nutrition 101 -English 101 -Pre-Cal I'm thinking of not doing CHEM and A&P together...because a lot of people have advised me not to...but I'm so tempted to do it because I'm typically the student that if she's not pressured, will go into procrastination mode...thus, I am speaking to my counselor tomorrow and hopefully she'll give me her advice...all I know for sure is that I need a 4.0....LOL!!! Good luck to everyone! (: I've been staring at my school's spring schedule for days now....haha.

Anyone have experience taking online nursing prerequisites? Specially at MGCCC?
Wow! That's SO crazy! A&P is already hectic enough as it is going to campus....I can't ever imagine doing it online....although I might have gone for it...LOL. All I have to say is...definitely good luck, and please...even though it's online, allow sufficient time for each subject! I've had to go extra days (non-class days) just to study/catch up on my labs or study for upcoming practicals! Let us know how it goes!

Feeling really down in the dumps and friend-less in nursing school...advice needed
I definitely know what you're going through. After deciding that I was going to go the medical route and started taking my science pre-reqs (Chem, BioChem, OChem, Biology, etc) I realized that people whom I thought were my "friends" were only there to use me. They would constantly ask me what I obtained on my tests and quizzes and then asked if we could form a study group, meet outside of class. Myself, being completely naive at the time, didn't think much of it. After the course would end, I would never speak to those people again. They never texted me and never made an attempt to communicate with me after it. Again, I completely know how you feel and I understand that it can be frustrating that you feel like a loner just because you do good on your exams/quizzes. But don't worry! In the end, you worked your butt off and you're going to get somewhere! There's always a bump in the road, don't let that stop you! You worked so hard, don't let this stop you! And you're not a loner! You got all of us here on the forums! Good luck to you and take care!!! (:

help! pre-req grades
I know I might be in the minority here...but I would go with the "W". As someone who has gotten into UCLA for Pre-Med and has had one W...I would rather take the W than a B-. Plus I've also worked for Graduate Admissions (for a department in UCLA) and know a lot of friends who work in Undergraduate Admissions as well...and as far as I know, as long as there isn't an excessive amount of W's (three or MORE) then they disregard them. I know that some super competitive Graduate Programs count "W"'s as "C"'s...so do be careful with that! Overall though, if you're looking to get into a SUPER (seriously, SUPER) competitive school such as UCLA (and trust me, it's so competitive) then you NEED to have a 4.0 GPA, there's NO doubt about that. Best of luck in your decision, I know what you feel! I had to drop my first ever Chemistry course because I just knew I wouldn't get a decent grade (had medical/personal reasons as well)...but I retook it later and got my A!

Refusing to dissect in A&P or Microbiology?
Wow! This thread is so long...lol! I'm just responding to the OP! In my A&P class we had to "dissect" a cat and we look at a cadaver (given to us by a local hospital) right from the day #1 of the semester (no joke!). I do know ONE student in my class who refuses to look/dissect the cat and cadaver so the TAs give him a separate test (he pretty much has to draw everything on the whiteboard and label it for them). Hope that helps! (:

A&P I, Psych Lifespan, Statistics
I definitely think you'll be fine! A lot of people stress that A&P shouldn't be taken with hard classes, but you seem to have your priorities in order! And yes, I agree--Statistics and A&P will take up most of your time! Prepare for some out-of-class lab time for A&P! Good luck to you!

Taking A&P in Spring 2013....HELP?
Hello there! I'm actually on my first semester of A&P! Let me tell you that you are doing yourself a favor by being prepared early! I wish I would have done the same! Anyways...like the posters above me, I definitely recommend you getting the textbook for your class ahead of time and start reading it! I find that the tests in A&P are more based off the textbook than actual lecture. For the lab portion...definitely start studying the tissue (histology) and bones....ah bones! Muscle you can't really get into just yet without having a foundation of the other two! I hope it helps and good luck next semester!!!! I'll be going for second semester of A&P and I hear that's just...well...LOL! Anyways, best of luck!!!
