  1. lap chole on saturday last thing said, in response to crna saying she was giving me versed - 'oh i like versed, makes you forget'. out first thing heard when i woke up - 'come on beth, take deep breaths for me, breathe!' seems my o2 sats were a tad low & i was being lazy with my breathing. the pacu nurses sat me up & had me cough, which solved the problem. first thing said - 'pain'
  2. Hi, and although I wasn't the OP, we too are looking to move to the Jacksonville area, so thanks for the advice! You stated that the working conditions at Shands aren't the best - do you know what they're like at Specialty Hospital? And what about benefits? My DH carries us here, but it's going to be up to me if we move, so I have to find a job that offers decent benefits. TIA BethAnn
  3. Hi, I'm an LPN considering a move to the Jacksonville, FL area. I've been to Shands & was impressed by them, & see from their website that they do utilize LPN's in many areas of the hospital, as well as home health & clinics. My question is - anyone have an opinion on Shands? Also, what other hospitals/ALF in the area do you recommend? I really don't want to get into LTC - just a personal choice, not a put down! TIA! BethAnn
  4. When faced with demanding patients, I just joke with my fellow nurses about working at the Hilton. Tonight, I nearly lost it though, when I walked into a room to give the pt in A bed a med & the daughter of the pt in B bed said, "there she is, ask her" & when her father asked 'there who is', the daughter replied, 'the maid!!
  5. Had one of these a while back. Family didn't believe pt had what they said he did, (believe it was MRSA of sputum). First they refused to glove/gown up, then when they did, they'd be in the common area, reading the magazines, touching the puzzle, etc. Even after I told them that they were risking the health of every other pt on the floor, they still did this!
  6. Just last night, one of the secretaries called me over to look at the telemetry monitor for 6B. She was questioning the odd, faint pattern, when it occured to us that there wasn't a patient in either bed in room 6, & that the monotor had been cleaned & put away. Thinking the battery had been left in it, another nurse checked the monitor - no battery. About 5 of us watched for several minutes as the waves got more & more faint & then disappeared. There were no codes last night, so we're thinking it was just someone stopping by to say 'Hi'.
  7. I've never posted before, but I had to respond to this one. Not a ghost or dream story, but still..... After two heart breaking miscarriages, I finally gave birth to my second son in '95. My grandmother, who I was very close to, was in a nursing home & was very aware that she was now a great-great-great grandmother (meaning she had 3 great-grandchildren). Exactly one week after my son was born, completely out of the blue & before I could get to the nursing home for her to see him, I got the call that she had passed. Fast forward a couple months. Every time I changed my son on his changing table, he would laugh & coo at someone/thing just over my left shoulder that no one else saw. I'm convinced that it was Grandma, having a little fun with her great-grandson. When this child was 2, I got pregnant again, & my son simply wouldn't put up with anyone saying that the baby was a boy. He'd point to my belly & insist that the baby was a 'sister', although the baby always turned away from the u/s so we had no idea if it was a boy or a girl. Well sure enough, the baby was indeed a little sister. I have some nursing ghost stories, but I'll save those for another time.
