Have any of you received anything back on your background check yet? I think we are supposed to be getting a "blue card" in the mail and then bringing it up to the school so they can make a copy of it. Seems like it's been several weeks now and I haven't heard anything on this.

I think you're worrying a little more than you need to be. Sure, it's going to be a lot of hard work but I don't think it's going to be as bad a some of the people on this site say. I think we are lucky enough to be going to the a really awesome school! As long as we are willing to put in the work, we'll be fine! I know a couple of people that have graduated from this school, I've never heard anything bad about it. Hell if it was easy everybody would be doing it and nobody would be learning anything! Heck we got in, which was no small feat;we can finish it! Are you getting excited about orientation and student success next week? I'm sure they'll be giving us our reading assignments and letting us know what to really expect.

Hey Katie, I see on Sonisweb that they have no textbooks listed for us for the up coming semester. Do you think we will be using the same ones listed for previous year? Have you purchased yours yet? I just bought the Foundations one, it costed $168 on Amazon!

Thanks Katie, you are a very resourceful person, I like that! I was really curious about my schedule and to my surprise now, I've got it! Hope you like your schedule, mine looks although it is going to work with my job, I was really worried about that.

Don't know if this will help but I to work the night shift. I work Monday - Friday 3 to 1130 pm . I was very concerned about this schedule and whether or not it was going to interfere with school. I have spoken to several people about the hours that the Baptist day program requires of students and everyone seems to agree that both classes and clinicals should not interfere with my work hours. Is that the shift that you will be working to or is it actually graveyard shift?

They seem to always take in a few extra people at he last minute. Apparently they have to fill all the slots and sometimes that means processing some last minute entries. Sounds like there's a good chance you'll be starting with us in January! As for that Gallop poll, lol...they should just call it what it is, a psych evaluation. Good luck to ya!

I think I'm beginning to see the consensus here says, "don't forgo the school required textbook for a shorter supplemental book of questions and answers with rationals. I was actually thinking about doing this but wasn't sure how I felt about it. You people have convinced me to go ahead and get the required textbooks and read them in their entirety. I may still use some supplemental learning books for certain topics like electrolyte and fluids, and dosage calculations. However, these books will be used as supplemental reading and not as substitute for the real textbook! I think a NCLEX question practice book will also be helpful but since I'm my 1st semester of nursing school that book now seems a bit premature.

I'm a busy 43 year old student working a full time job and about to start a two year RN program in January. I've read on this site that many more advanced nursing students are recommending the use of books other than what the nursing school itself lists. The type of books I'm speaking of are like, "The Incredibly Easy Nursing Series" and other more simply written and easy to read and understand nursing books. Apparently, and I can relate to this, many nursing students are of the opinion than the textbooks the nursing schools are suggesting are far too difficult to read, and are filled with way too much information making understanding the basic concept of the topic being studied way too difficult. I know from personal experience while completing my prerequisites that reading simplified text that clearly illustrates the basic and fundamental aspects of a topic is for me tremendously more valuable than getting lost in the writings of some author than was clearly trying to write a very thick book! I just wanted to hear for some others that have experienced this for themselves. Is finding what works for yourself the best way to go, or do we absolutely need to struggle thru and learn the concepts with what the teacher and school is using?

Hi Kmoc! you said clinicals are usually from 645 to 1245. And I remember being told during in processing that they like to have clinical days back to back like mon & tue or Wed & Thurs. Question do you by any chance know the classroom hours we will be keeping. I so in to work each day at 3 and I'm hoping we will get out of class each day by at least 2. I got your contact info, thanks! Have you bought all the books we're going to be using during the 1st semester yet. Looks like Amazon is going to be the best place to get them. The prices seem a little cheaper there than what is quoted on the school provided book list. Also, on that list, the 1st book listed foundations for nursing practice. The notes say, that we much purchase SLS sccess package to participate in next clinical course. Do you know what exactly the SLS is? I don't want to buy this book online and then find out that it was supposed to come with something extra and then not have it.

Question, are any of you that will be attending BSHP in Jan. still waiting for your financial aid award letter? I was told that I could expect to receive an email a couple of weeks from Nov 7, my processing day. Did anybody get theirs yet? Anybody in the same boat as me? I'm really curious as to how much if any I will be responsible for coming up with out of pocket. Processing day was a little stressful for me to, I also thought there was quite a bit of info thrown at me very fast; guess that's nursing school for you!

I'm starting the program on Jan 6th to.

I'm thinking about taking a tech job after my first semester in nursing school. I'm older so i simply have to work during nursing school, too many responsibilities. I work in a hospital now as a maintenance man but I would like to start working in a clinical setting just as soon as possible so that I'm not completely dumbfounded when I do graduate and get my license. My question is whats the best area to work in as a new male new tech? ICU, ED, Med-Surg?

For those of you that have done well in the required nursing school prerequisites, you need not worry too much about the TEAS exam. The exam just tests how well you were paying attention during your prerequisite courses. Nothing new just more of the same. If you never really got it all the first go round than the study guide will be very beneficial to you. It explains a lot and provides practice questions and practices quizzes. Even if the you did understand most of the material when you took your prerequisites the study guide is an excellent way of refreshing the material. Take 3 or 4 weeks studying several hours a day, take your time and work through the entire study guide and you'll be golden. I am not a strong student and I used the study guide and did very well on the exam the first time. I won't tell you what I made because it doesn't matter, what matters is the my score got me into a nursing school right away. Good luck everyone!

I recommend taking any or all science prerequisites at St.Philips. So much better than Sac, no parking problem, better classrooms and lab's, and awesome instructors. All that for the exact same price as SAC, it's a no brainer! The have an LVN program at present but they are working on starting up a RN program as well in the future. Getting your LVN first and then being a RN program is soothe good route to consider. I was going to do that but recently got abhorred into the Baptist RN program

Hi busy with nursing! Sometimes I think I'm the only one who is going to have to work while in nursing school. Seems like everyone I know didn't have to work and only had to go to class, clinicals and study. Thanks for posting, it's kinda reassuring to see that I'm not the only one in this boat. I admire your courage and hope that I can display a little of my own when the going gets tough. Are you going to be at the BSHP in San Antonio also?

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has commented on this thread. I'm about to start a two year RN program this spring and I'm plenty nervous about it. Hearing the ideas to stay on top of things and maintain your sanity is helping me to believe that this is something I can get thru. I'm an older student and I've come to realize my age has made me a much better student. I understand that wasting time like I did in my youth is not an option. I'm all about business now and reaching my goals. My advice to younger students is to learn from the mistakes of others. Don't waste years and years of your life never accomplishing the challenges you have dreamed about for yourself. Do the work, make the sacrifices and the time will pass quickly. Before you know it you will have reached and accomplished your goals. I tell you, the time is going to pass one way or the other, you might as well be where you want to be.

She should have vomited all over that instructor. How could a nurse be so unfeeling. Yes, she's an instructor but also a nurse. How could she teach students to show compassion but yet exercise none herself?

The secret is to use the study guide. I spent three weeks studying 3 or 4 hours a day and took the exam. I made a 78 which I thought was not too good but the lady that worked at the university where I took the exam said it was a very healthy score for that exam. Anyway, that 78 got me a spot in a well respected RN program in San Antonio!

I'm stuck in a lease until the end of June and I don't need the apartment anymore. I want to move in with my girlfriend who owns her own home but I don't want to break the lease. I thought it would be wonderful if I could rent my apartment out to someone that will be starting the program with me in January. It is an attractive complex and plenty safe! I've lived there more than year now and never had any problems or complaints. I would include the basic funishings like ...bed, sofa, kitchen table, silverware and dishes. The rent is $565 plus utilities which usually run around another $40 or so.
