MSN after Hospice Nursing
Hello all. I'm considering making the move to a Hospice Home Care position. I still consider myself a new graduate nurse I just graduated last December. I was working in the ICU but after 9 months I decided it wasn't for me. I've alwaud had an interest in Hospice so I'm very excited about the position. My question is has anyone gone on to pursue their MSN after working primarily in Hospice home care? Do MSN programs prefer applicants with more hospital experience? I definitely want to earn a graduate degree one day, but I'm not sure what direction I want to go in. I don't want to hurt myself by taking a home care position early in my careeer. Any advice would be great thank you!

GTCC Spring 2016
For any students who took Bio-166 Anatomy and Physiology 2 at GTCC, does anyone remember what systems were covered or the chapters in the book that they were? I was trying to do some reading over the holidays and hoping to get a head start on it.

GTCC Spring 2016
Just to let the other alternates out there know.... There is hope!!! I am #4 and I received my email today offering me a seat in the program! I'm so excited and can't believe it's happened already!

GTCC Spring 2016

GTCC Spring 2016
I'm an alternate and are u referring to the email about the background check? I know we're supposed to attend orientation, but the email I received was saying we don't have to pay for the background check yet. But the admitted students do at orientation.

GTCC Spring 2016
I'm alternate #4 and so far no I haven't heard anything. I wondered if we wouldn't receive phone calls or anything until after the health forms were due. I know my friend was an alternate a few years ago and she didn't receive her phone call until sometime in November.

GTCC Spring 2016
I received my letter today. I am alternate #4 on the list which I'm pretty happy about since I haven't finished bio165 yet. If I do get a seat in the program I'll have to take bio 166 along with nursing 111. I am optimistic though and hope I'll get a seat. And I applied with 37 points. For my 1st mar back in the spring I had like 44 but with certain classes no longer counting and Tiffany at first saying my bachelors degree awarded me points, this time they said no I ended up with only 37.

GTCC Spring 2016
I didn't study much for the teas and rushed to take it and passed it. For me it was just a long test. I feel like it just dragged on and on. I scored highest on the math surprisingly because I'm not a math person. But for that section it was really just about remembering how to do math I haven't done in awhile without a calculator like the rules of fractions for instance. The science I wish I would've studied for more and the grammar I feel like I rushed through because it was last and I was ready to be done with it. But in my opinion the science section was the hardest.

GTCC Spring 2016
From both friends I currently know in the program, they both said the program is very tough. One friend is down to working only one day a week. She said it is very time consuming between classes, clinicals, and studying. As far as the decline interest in the program. I've been told that people are going to other programs such as Forsyth because of the nursing programs minimum score for passing tests within the program is higher than at Forsyth Tech. I dk how true that is but that's what I've been told. Also I know from personal experience that a lot of people don't make it through Bio-165 and Bio-166 at GTCC because it's so tough here. This is my second time repeating Bio-165 because I got a high D the first time I took it and only 4 people in my class passed it and we started with at least 50.

GTCC Spring 2016
Yea I'm hoping just to have worry about Bio-166 in the Spring with nursing classes and then that's it. Friends in the program have told me it's doable the first semester but after that it's not a good idea. And yea normally the gtcc threads have a lot of responses. We're less than a month a way so I thought more people would be posting. I know for the fall semester application this past February they had to extend the deadline because they had the fewest # of applicants they've ever had so I wonder if that will be the case again this time around.

GTCC Spring 2016
Hello! I also am applying for the Spring 2015 entry! I can't believe how quickly the deadline is approaching. I have already taken the TEAS test but I have not gone for my MAR review yet. My points probably won't be that high. I am going to take BIO 165 this semester and BIO 166 next semester. Other than that, I have completed all of the other prerequisites.

GTCC Fall 2015 ADN
Hello all, I applied to GTCC's nursing program since the admissions office extended the deadline. I'm really excited and hope I am accepted or at least be selected as an alternate. I had 40 points at my MAR review last Thursday. I still haven't completed either Anatomy course and hope to complete 1 in the summer and the 2nd part in the fall.

Salisbury VA Hospital Hiring Process
I am currently a CNA trying to get a job at the VA Hospital in Salisbury, NC. I have filled out a few applications and was wondering if anyone is familiar with the hiring process? I have seen from previous posts that it sometimes can take awhile... I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience or tips and if they could share it with me. Thanks!

Not Being Respected as a CNA
Thanks for all the support. I know no one cares about my feelings and unless you've worked as a CNA I don't think you can relate. I just meant the profession in general I feel doesn't get any respect and when your working your tail off taking care of 16 patients or even 31 if your by yourself. I just feel like some of the nurses could be more respectful instead of running some CNA's down or even when asking to do something instead of telling them. I do love my job and my relationships that I have formed with my patients. I think just with any job I guess I have my good days and my bad. Thanks for the support.

Not Being Respected as a CNA
Hello to all my fellow CNA's out there. I have almost been a CNA for a full year and have only held one job as a CNA at a very large teaching hospital in NC. My question for CNA's is how do you deal with not being respected by some of the nursing students, nurses, doctors, and sometimes even fellow CNA's? I love my job and since I have a year under my belt I finally feel comfortable in my role and feel like I do my job well. But the one thing I have not gotten used to is the lack of respect and being treated like an idiot. Is it just a matter of needing to be more thick-skinned? I am doing my prerequisites for nursing school and really enjoy patient care and the learning the experiences that have come from being a CNA. But I am considering finding a different job while I am in nursing school. Has anyone else been through this and if so how did you handle it?

Struggling to Juggle Nursing Pre-Reqs, Work, and Motherhood.... HELP!
I am currently in Anatomy and Physiology I at Guilford Technical Community College. I am attempting to get into the nursing program and the only thing standing in my way is the current class I am in and then Anatomy and Physiology II. I am stressed to my max right now with juggling this class, working 36 hours a week at a hospital an hour a way from my home, and taking care of my 11 month old and four year old sons on my own. To all the students and mothers out there, how did you balance everything. Right now for the class I have a 69.35, which is very disappointing considering I am ususally always an A/B student. I study when I have free time but still do awful on the lecture tests. Lab tests are actually the only thing saving me from doing even worse. I just need some words of wisdom on how to study more efficiently and learn the material better than I currently am. Any study tips or advice for studying with the kids around would be greatly appreciated!

Is it worthwhile to become a CNA before going to nursing school?
From the majority of nurses I have spoken with I have heard that it helped them tremendously to work as a Nursing Assistant before they went through nursing school. Especially ones that worked in a hospital setting. I think though that any type of CNA experience would be helpful before nursing school. They told me it helped them gain patient care experience and it helps you to appreciate your CNA's if you were one before becoming an RN. I myself am working as a CNA before nursing school in a hospital setting so that I can get some experience. I admire people who can just jump right into nursing school. I just felt like it would help me before I do so.

ADN Degree "Is it worth it?"
Hello, I also am in the same position as u, I have a degree (non health care related) and I am debating on whether or not I should get my associates or pursue a bsn from the get go. Every nurse I talk to says for me to go ahead and get my BSN. But I am already pretty in far in debt from my 1st degree that I am not even using right now. Plus with accelerated programs, I am told its impossible to work full time and I have two children right now to support. An associates degree looks like it would be a better option cost wise. But I do know that the Cone Health System in Greensboro will hire u with an Associates degree but u had to have already been working in the system as an CNA or LPN. And they will require u to obtain your BSN within 5 years of signing your contract. High Point Regional I think is the same way. Duke Hospital hires nurses with Associates degrees and will help pay for you to obtain a BSN. I hope that helps and good luck!

CNA Resume Tips/Job Hunting
Hey I also am someone who went transitioned careers and my advice is to include all of the following that you listed on your resume. I took my CNA class and then was able to get a CNA job at a hospital without any previous medical experience. I had worked in sales before and had only had two previous jobs, but I think my manager liked that I had worked with people and seemed to have great people skills. I think that all your previous experience is relevant to being a CNA and would look great on your resume. And as far as looking for a job, I started looking for one as soon as I passed my written and skills test. Hope that helps and good luck!
