  1. Thanks for your feedback, I am not a new adjunct, doing this for last 16 months but a situation like this happened recently. I am not even considering the extra 10-12 hrs I spend in grading as I am used to that exercise but its just the thought of working 2 days unpaid is new to me. I am understanding the point and hope it'll help me to make my decisions.
  2. A new contracted clinical faculty gets hired, she is temporary.... has to take students to a certain hospital. Hospital requires faculty to take skills test and some classes for 2 days roughly around 8 hrs/day, these are extra days besides orientation.. The hiring institution says its not our requirement so we'll not pay, the hospital/clinical site says unless faculty does it, we won' let him come on floor and also as the faculty is not on our payroll, we'll not pay either. So, faculty has to spend unpaid 24 hrs in hospital. is this fair ?
  3. Make sure you outline or give your assignment schedule to the students right in the beginning, make a rule as to how you'll tackle situations when students miss their clinicals or give assignments late, give them prompt reply usually within 24 hrs, don't give lenient A's until its really well deserved. watch their interaction with nurses. Good luck
  4. I left floor nursing exactly after 24 months and am a LVN faculty and have never looked back. I had my BSN so it was easy but if your heart is set onto something go for it. Try RN informatics which will become big in near future.
  5. I agree with all the posts that it depends on the geographic location but as for west ( CA) , BSN is becoming very popular. In fact some HR offices n hospitals here have clearly said that ADN's should not apply as BSN is preferred. BSN' s usually get $2 more than others and are preferred for managerial positions.
  6. I have been following my co-instructor's assignment pattern for clinical students but I believe her paperwork for clinical is lengthy. We have mandatory assignments of daily clinical evals, nursing diagnosis and case study. What else I can add. Can somebody share their ideas or rubrics for additional assignments. Something which will help them on floors and NCLEX both. Any ideas are welcome and thank you in advance :)
  7. You're welcome reddgirl. I also agree with JBudd's suggestions. You can make good rapport with nursing profession examples in your class but beware of discussing too much of personal or family details. Good Luck :)
  8. Hello reddgirl, there's always 1st time but it'll get better once you have 3-4 classes. Don't show your nervousness to your students, stay calm, prepare your material to teach, explain your rules for absences late work etc because these things will really become problem later if not cleared earlier. You can tell then that you are there to help them and can be reachable by email at so and so time. Make them share their fears about nursing course or being a licensed nurse one day. Gradually the classes will get interesting and more open. Document any unusual behavior of any student and don't let any student interrupt the normal class by stretching with discussions which can be talked about later on one to one basis. hope this helps
  9. Having a job with good mgmt and less commute is a blessing. If they are giving you part time then may be after few months looking at your work, they might give you more hrs or make you full time.
  10. I am trying to figure out what kind of clinical instructor we wanted in school. While some shared numerous stories some just wanted us to be patient tech and over over hyper about meds. I believe these days many years of experience doesn't count as much as how any instructor handles the diverse group of students.
  11. Thanks GrnTea for your advice and I apologize for the fast typed letter. The requirements for my second employer states TB screening within last 3 months but I have TB screening done 4 months back at my own cost. I am wondering is it ok to subject me for another screening at such a short interval at my own expense when I have my annual TB neg results for this year (as well as for the last year). any input is appreciated :)
  12. Is it ok to get TB screening within 6 mos because there are 2 employers. if both annual date fall within 6 mos period. for example one employer's annual screen is due in january and another one's in may then is it not ok to show jan TB screen results (neg) to second employer in may.
