RN from South Africa asks if she'll need refresher courses in Texas
Contact the BON via nurse portal for any questions. In general if it has been more than 4 years since you graduated or last practice you need a refresher. I went to phes online many years ago and they were great. There are also one in Austin community college but they didn't offer clinical and it was hard to find on your own. Best wishes.

Ready for a different area of practice
So, after being a stay at home mom for a few years and taking a Nurse Refresher course I have been working 5 years back in clinical setting and am feeling a bit worn. 12 hr shifts, lifting, etc. Still want to make a difference and help patients. So, I am taking my patient advocacy role to a new level. I have signed up for a course to learn about the role of the nurse as a Case Manager. I am really excited. It includes online training, lecture and, clinicals in Houston. I am super excited and look forward to moving into a new area of nursing. Will keep you posted.

ICU Charge Nurse with Patient Assignment
Charge does not take patients routinely. it works really well because they can support those just coming off orientation as well as any pool nurses. They are also part of Code Blue and RRT team so, when would they take care of their own patients?

Should I try and become a Nurse in a Naturopathic Clinic or a Naturopathic Doctor?
I know of some of the CAM out there and that patients have had some good individual results. I have performed a literature review on the subject but, that would be my first suggestion to see what evidence is out there. also check the licensing requirements for your state prior to enrolling an a program to make sure it will meet your needs and you will be practicing legally. We have some holistic mds in our area but, seem the be just peddling their own herbs rather than really solving the problem. I am still uncertain about the whole thing but, like the idea of integrating less traditional approaches to the fast, less cut and cure everything right now approach.

Texas BON and New Letter
They usually make you take Jurisprudence course in person and work on 1 year restriction, like no floating, no staffing companies, another RN present, etc. I don't think so about the TPAPN but, the tPapn people are very nice and open to questions so maybe call them for answers.

Should I resign, or be suspended?
Write a note of apology to the NM. Offer to stay to finish out your year at the least, no hard feelings, it was an oversight, blah, blah, blah. Thanks for pointing out my errors. Realize I have a lot to learn, thanks for time invested in me. Like you and the unit, was just trying to get closer to home, etc. If they have any leadership skills they will accept and move on. There will be other jobs available and it is a really tough market for those without 2 years of experience. Also, really small healthcare world and you may need this person or work with them in the future. Be the bigger person.

Help, I'm stuck and unsure what to do??
I don't see where an incident report was done. That is only thing I can add about the situation in retrospect. Sorry, this happened to you. Real problem is chronic understaffing of these facilities. They then, have poor training, increase use of unlicensed staff (med aides instead of LVNs) set the staff up for falsifying documentation (pre-charting), poor care, etc. Yes, you bear some blame for not getting some type of update or report from the Med aide/tech and BON will probably sanction your license. I would make sure you have a full time job as they will not allow you to work staffing or multiple part time jobs if they do. You will get through it. Keep your head up.

Nursing school vaccinations
I understand some don't have insurance and sometimes the health clinics are extremely busy or out of what you need. I wet to The Immunization Clinic Southwest in Stafford and they take Blue Cross PPO for vaccines and they do titers for all insurances with just a co-pay even the school type student insurance like we have United Student Insurance at our school and this has been hard to find someone for the new requirements for titers on top of the vaccine shots. they also participate in several patient assistance programs for those with no or lower income. the staff was nice and they are open Saturdays too.

refresher classes
I did a nurse refresher course and felt it was most helpful. Some boards of nursing will list the approved program but, others like the Texas BON do not give out any info and I think I am not supposed to share websites or emails and don't think we can even list names without it being considered advertising so, my recommendation is to Google nurse refresher course or program and then make inquires, ask for student references, etc. I saw quite a few programs but, many did not have clinicals and this is critical to feeling confident again as well as for you to be able to update your resume with current experience. If you want to know where I went you can private message me and I will tell you. Good luck on successful transition back. I am glad I did it.

Need Helpful Advice! LPN-RN Refresher
Hi you are so right about the LVN pay and work load. She can study with a review program liek Springhouse or Lippincott or Kaplan and I would also suggest a Nurse Refresher Program. Just google that and the city you are in and some should pop up. I am in Houston and attended one and that is how I was able to return to practice. Also, suggest she brush up on computer skills with a class at the library or community center as that may be adding to her test anxiety. Good luck, Returned Nurse
