  1. Houston Texas has some of the highest salaries compared w/ the cost of living. I'm making around $45/hr
  2. I'm ecstatic that everyone has been accepted...I wish you all the very best in your studies/endeavors. Hope to meet some of y'all on campus someday.
  3. It's called Instantcert Academy@ instantcert.com
  4. There's an online program that cost like $20 a month with study cards for all Clep and Dante's exams. I was able to test out of 3 courses. It's a lot cheaper
  5. When you prep with the betadine the urethra should "wink" at you...that always helped me
  6. I'm so happy for you..,a celebration is in order
  7. @Imadoki I have almost 11yrs nursing experience. 7 in ER (2 of those pediatric ) 2 in adult TSICU and 2 in pedi CVICU. I'm graduating this May from UTHSC with 4.0 GPA
  8. Hi everyone I got my green check mark!!! Yay!! I can exhale
  9. I wonder if it's 20 per semester or year?
  10. Good luck! Did you apply for summer or fall?
  11. When I had my interview he said the same thing about mid to late April. I'm just hope I'll know by my graduation. Do you know why they wanted a picture of us?
  12. I don't know yet, she emailed for a date and time I would be available. Hopefully I'll know after spring break
  13. I applied for the acute care NP program for fall and received email for interview yesterday for placement of summer and fall applicants
  14. I don't personally see an issue with it but it's been really played out. When I think of my job sexy doesn't pop in my mind...try sexy belly dancer
  15. Great idea! The issue in my state is that nurses work at least12 hrs and you can't leave your kid in daycare over 12 hrs. Puts a predominantly female occupation in a pickle
  16. I worked in the corporate arena @ AIG prior and during nursing school. I thought that was what u wanted and even took some accounting courses. I have always loved medicine and healthcare ( I even went to DeBakey HS for health professions), I was just side tracked and I came back when I applied to ADN program because it was short and I wanted to make decent money. I had no idea I would learn so much about myself, compassion, and patience. This profession has allowed me to travel and switch specialties that I felt I learned enough about. I have now applied for the NP program to see another side of nursing. Don't rush anything because school can't take the place of experience. With my 11 years experience I feel comfortable becoming a NP but if I only had 1-2( that's required) not so much. I have intuition about situations that are almost always right, can't learn that in class. Good Luck
  17. Go to California!!!! You can't put a price on life experiences. The people and culture is totally different and the weather is wonderful, it would be the only time you could probably afford to live there. If you count the free housing, you come out making more....I did assignment in LA years ago and lived in Marina del Rey where the apartment cost over $3,000 a month and I could walk to the beach.
  18. Are there any scholarship programs because the price is pretty steep with me being from Texas
  19. I have worked with both in the ICU and ER settings. I like both, but children are fighters! They are innocent; when I was with adults my exterior was a bit harder and I didn't smile half as much. Families help with kids not like adults. Adults whine like they are kids and are actually more needy. Does the adult unit have adequate ancillary staff to assist in turning, dressing changes, bathing, ect. Think about your back. Peds don't go through alcohol withdrawals day 3 in the ICU turning your once nice patient psychotic. Peds can be much more interesting with all the congenital diseases seen. Adults are pretty straight forward; tons of co-morbities from unhealthy living. On the other hand you don't have to see senseless child abuse cases, car accidents from parents drinking intoxicated. I loved trauma but never pediatric trauma; adults can do stupid sh*t and it be funny but never a child.
  20. Go with med-surg; once you start work outside of hospitals it difficult to get in. Med-surg will give you assessment skills; plus you can transfer within a hospital to another unit if you choose later down the line. Plus prn are always cancelled first.
  21. They have A&P apps for the iPhone. Also audible books you could listen to.
  22. It's completely normal to feel the way you do. I have been a RN for over 10 years and I still remember my first job and how I had to ask for a different preceptor to get the best experience. You are human; if you weren't anxious that would be kinda scary. My suggestion is if you have a question or question an order, ask it? Good luck in your career!
  23. My unit doesn't dump on float pool because they can't admit CVICU cases but I have heard it happens on the floors....but the float pool nurses get paid $8.00 extra an hour. I think some of the nurses are jealous; I just say don't hate, participate
