LOL, how much experience are you looking for? 5? 10? 15? No offense, 3 years is PLENTY to be charge nurse, assuming everything else is equal (i.e., said individual isn't a complete idiot). A charge nurse is more of a point person or a resource nurse, it doesn't necessarily mean said individual is the most experienced or knows everything.

I don't really know what you mean by "I can't keep up with my relaxed hair" (Is it too expensive? Don't feel like washing it every 4-5 days? Is it fragile and breaking and you want to manipulate it less so it can grow and get stronger?), but anyways I would press it, don't relax, to achieve the same straight look the relaxer will give you. After the interview, I would proceed with the box braids if you are so inclined. If you do relax I would give it a few weeks before you put in the box braids (too much stress for the hair). GL

Thanks Flyonn! Congrats to you too, I'm going to be in the CTICU as well. I'm trying to decide if I should live in a temple or a nearby city were the social scene is more forgiving, but I don't want to deal with too much traffic. I like temple, but it seems like it gets really quiet at night. I live out-of-state. I'm not a new grad, I have about a year of experience in acute care, but I doubt it's going to give me an advantage since it's in a completely different specialty and was not in the ICU.

I applied for the ICU internship. The director sent me an e-mail asking 4 basic questions about the 2 year commitment, which unit I preferred, why Scott&White, and my expectations for the program. If selected for an interview, interviews will be the first week of December. Has anyone else heard anything? I spoke to a recruiter about the Meet and Greet, she really encouraged me to attend, because apparently some people were offered job positions a few days after (this was for their last Meet and Greet in April), but I couldn't justify the expense since I live on the east coast and nothing would be guaranteed, and I would have to fly to Temple again if granted an interview. The Director sent me the e-mail on Tuesday, I replied this morning because I have been so busy and exhausted from work. Hope I'm still in the running.

They seem to be blaming the nurse's inexperience, certifications, and etc., now that another nurse in the same hospital has contracted the disease, I wonder if they will remain on the same trajectory? Hopefully they realize that most hospitals are not equipped to handle Ebola, and hopefully the blame is placed on the officials who thought that the hospitals would be able to, without the necessary training or infrastructure.

Wow, sorry about your mom . As someone who has done a similar cost benefit analysis of pursuing CRNA, I'm learning one thing about life, it's not easy. Please know, if you do decide to become an AA, you will encounter challenges there, albeit different, as well. My suggestion is to make a list of things that are important to you. When you see yourself in 10 years, how do you envision your life? If in 10 years you see yourself enjoying a greater sense of autonomy while caring for those at one of their most vulnerable moments in life, then please pursue CRNA. If you envision something else for yourself, then that it is okay too. You are fairly new at you place of employment, but I would look into sick leave for family care or bereavement. I also encourage you to pray for the answers you seek if you are religious. Whatever goals you set for yourself, I implore you to continue walking even when it hurts, and when you have less hope and more disappointments. When you finally reach your goal, your true goal, it will be that much sweeter. GL.

Hey guys, GL w/ your interviews. I didn't read any of the previous posts but I interviewed last year and was offered a position in CC. I declined solely b/c of the pay (Vanderbilt is an absolute beauty, and the staff and different level of employees I met while there were the most professional compared to all the other individuals I had met on previous interviews.) If you guys are offered a spot, really consider everything Vandy has to offer. As someone who is currently making $17 more hourly than what Vandy offered at a Trauma Center in my home state, I regret my decision every day. My offer letter stated that base pay was $20.85 (obviously not including diffs). The interview was pretty standard. 3-5 standard interview questions followed by some behavioral questions. I was interviewed by two managers and was greeted by Ms. Fargo w/ preliminary info about the residency before the actual interview. I decided on a hotel near the airport and not the interview site. My hotel had free shuttle service to/from the airport and was about a 7 min drive. I took a taxi to the interview site (20-25 min drive and cost approx $50 roundtrip).

Hello Minnesotans! I'm considering a possible move to MN. I will be strictly looking into CC positions. I will have 1-year of Stepdown experience when I start applying, and I will be looking into positions at Mayo, Hennepin, and North Memorial. It seems like MN pays a decent salary and has a low cost of living, am I missing something? I know this will not be easy, but it surely can't be more difficult than obtaining a CC position in the NJ/NY area. Any comments, concerns, and/or advice are appreciated. I plan to start the licensure by endorsement process soon. Moreover, it seems that most of the positions that I've researched only require 1-year of acute care experience. Thanks in advance for any help.

They are also changing the MCAT in 2015. So if you do go that route look into the new psychology/sociology section of the test, and consider taking those courses, if you have not done so already. Additionally the test will be more "biochemistry" intensive. IMHO, you seem very young, so I would encourage you to go the MD/DO route. However, if nursing fits your lifestyle better, then that is fine too. Good Luck.

You clearly did non understand my post. Having a stance on something is one thing, but dismissing other people's behavior or actions as "hogwash" simply because it is not aligned with what you would do is silly. As someone who is a practicing Catholic, I would never get an abortion. However, if someone else wants to; it is their life, their decision, their body. "My" world view should not be everyone's world view, and I have nothing to say regarding the matter. If someone asks, I may opine as to what I would do but I would never present it in a way that makes it seem that my way is the ONLY way. If OP wants to stay at her employer for one year or more then that is fine, but if someone else does not, to dismiss their decision as hogwash or unprofessional is condescending.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought that I read somewhere that orientation was 9 months, hence why I was nervous about the contract. If the orientation is only 4 months and you sign the contract immediately after, the commitment is a little less burdensome. Oh well, I called and left a message to withdraw my consideration, and I didn't even get so much as a confirmation e-mail. I also e-mailed the nurse recruiter with questions beforehand and she never got back to me. GL Maribee, you never know!!!

Wow Florida hospitals are that terrible that you are willing to even consider taking an $11 hourly pay cut? The answer should have been a resounding no. I'm interested in critical care, and I routinely see many residencies for CC in different Florida hospitals and posts like this one and others are why I would NEVER consider applying to any position in Florida. Unless I'm missing something, i.e., new baby on the way so you need a job that is less physically demanding, or maybe you are looking for something closer to your home, or etc., I repeat the answer to that offer should be a resounding no, followed by a quick exit.

This is the biggest trepidation that I have. My CNS said the same thing about "not qualifying". Although my job pays for the certification and pays you extra for having it, the biggest motivating factor me is to simply land an ICU position. I'm also concerned that if I have my CCRN, and if I do finally land an ICU position, orientation will be less than fun b/c the level of expectation may be higher. Good point delphine 22. I think I'm just going to take the PCCN and then take the the CMC-subspecialty. All my patients are cardiac monitor patients anyway, and my ideal ICU job would be in the CTICU.
