Thank you!!!! That is exactly what I was looking for!

Assessment in different languages
We do have a language line, yes. I mostly ask questions that requires yes or now answer, or ask patient to nod the head for yes or shake for no. I have found a few apps on iPhone that speak the questions out loud and then asks the pt to say yes or no:)

IV removal etiquette?
I put Dcd iv in a sharp container as well, always put a gauze over an infection site before removing the cath, usually when you remove the iv the leftover blood that might be still in angiocath would be pulled to the tube.( in my case:), so no blood drops:))

1 year mark in the ED and need resume help
Congratulations! Happy for you ! ER is a very interesting thing, either you like it or hate it! Definitely not for everyone:) In regards of the resume, try to find out the name of DON of the hospital you are applying to, and sent her/him a complete package that includes resume, cover letter, references letter and copy of your certificates (specialty, ACLS, PALS, EKG, etc). In every hospital most of the hiring process is held online , therefore your resume goes to the database. As you can imagine not every single applicant is being looked at , its about who you know. Be precise on your description, mentioned your experiences and knowledge, achievements. Have your patient thanked you and thought you are the wonderful nurse? You are a professional, show your skills, be confident and true. Don't write something that you are not familiar with, be honest. I got my ER job after having a clinical rotation during my rn refresher course(i have been out of work for 7 years), during my only 2 days of clinical I went to my instructor and asked her , how can I meet with a director or ER. ER director saw my friend and I during that time. We got an interview, but I was calling daily to follow up. :) good luck!

Assessment in different languages
Does anyone one know where to buy a small guide or book that gives you simple assessment questions in different languages (chinese, tagalog, korean). We have a very big Asian patient population in our ER, and I want to be able ask patient a few questions before calling a language line.

Being thrown to the wolves during orientation
I just started working in the ER myself, just finished my orientation (6 weeks).I guess it really depends on what are your hospital settings are. However, the reason you are with a preceptor is to be oriented and no to be on your own in a first few days. I agree with XmasShopperRN, you have to speak up if you are uncomfortable.if you don't ask questions people assume you know things. We learn daily something new. On my last day of orientation I had my first code, next time I was on my own and had another one,but I am very blessed to work with a very supportive team. Hang in there! P.S. Chart right after each pt is you can, otherwise you will be extremely overwhelmed.

Experienced RNs who had been out of practice for a while
Dear fellow Nurses! I am a licensed CA RN. However I have been out of practice for quite some time(9 years to be exact). I am currently taking my RN refresher courses, which includes clinical rotation as well. Also I signed myself up for the IV therapy certification classes( in order to Refresh my skills). I am having a very hard time finding a job anywhere:) Does anyone know any hospitals or medical facility that have a preceptor ship program for RNs? I would also like to connect with some nurses who has a similar experiences to mine:)

In order to find out for sure if you passed the exam you need to try to register for the exam again in pearson vue, if the system stops you before letting you eneter the cc number you passed. Also the next day or so go to the board of nursing website and check for active licenses under your name, Mine showed up the next day. http://www.ca.rn.gov

Can't get a job as new RN
I am trying to find a job in southern Ca as well. I was a nurse in Russia and just got my license here. Unfortunately I had been told if i don't have a recent experience( even though I was a nurse for 6 years of Oncology and Hematology unit) I would be considered as a new graduate student. There is another dilemma that I am having, most hospitals only wants to hire nurses with a recent experience, but how do you get experience without being hired. I was thinking about to obtain some specialty certificates like Advanced EKG certificate, or chemotherapy in order to improve my skills. Any suggestion where to apply with higher chances of being hired?
