I've had the same questions linger in my mind for quite some time. Not sure how the academics would look at an MPH over an MSN. With that said, I know plenty of nursing professors that opted for an MPH over MSN and went on to Doctoral studies. I think it depends on what you want to do. MPH are more data oriented, statistically inclined minds. I'd love to hear other thoughts. Another thing: the only MSN program with a public health nursing track that I know of is in Minnesota. At the University of Minnesota. However, to my knowledge, they are no longer doing MSN programs and going straight from BSN to DNP or PhD professional degrees. I myself will go for the MPH. I love data, numbers, and analysis.

Hi: I am currently researching the area of palliative care in the U.S. I have run into a lot of literature that talks about the topic abroad (Britain, etc...), but not a whole heck of a lot here at home...for you experts out there... Is there such a thing as standardized referral criteria to help healthcare workers identify patients who would be most appropriate for palliative care services??? Thank you all!:monkeydance:

Strandy: thank you for posting. I hope it goes better for me at Bethel than you....gosh, that must have sucked that they lost your transcripts!!!! I started the program 2 weeks ago, and you are right, I had to take CWC (Christian and Western Civilizations). Since I am not working right now, I have had a lot of time to prepare for the class. It is a lot of reading and analyzing data and transalating how the past affects us today...YUCK! But on the other hand, I am learning a lot and that's what I'm there to do...learn. Wish me luck! I did check out MSU and a whole bunch of other private colleges, but the other private colleges where either to far or even more expensive than Bethel. MSU had a long list of pre-req's and it would have taken me years to finish my BSN. Bethel took a lot more of my credits and I only had to take one additional class to meet general ed. requirements. So that's really why I chose to go there. I too was shocked to see that the U did not have an RN-BSN program...they should start one up!!!!!!!!! :)

I think you may have misinterpreted what the post was asking for. I am not looking to do a program all over again, just get my BSN. Bethel is a private christian college so they do tend to me somewhat "traditional" and conservative in their views. I'm wondering if that's were you got the impression I was looking to do it all over again. Oh gosh, NO!!!!!!!:chuckle That's one nightmare I don't want to relive, thanks for posting!:)

yes, bethel is a christian school with the bsn curriculum focused not only on clinical focus, but spirituality as well. that really sparked an interest in me and was excited about interconnecting both topics into my nursing practice. hodge, does this school have a good reputation in the community? you can pm if you wish. :) your comments are greatly appreciated. everyone who answered my post, thank you!!!:balloons:

Yes, metro has a rn to bsn program and bethel has 4 yr and rn to bsn programs as well. the u of m does not have rn to bsn programs, that sucked, but oh well. i was thinking of bethel, it is expensive, but i though it was a good school. Have you heard anything good about bethel?

You've got a positive attitude. My last bedside position sucked. They changed managers and the manager decided she didn't like the head nurse that had been doing her job for the past 6 years. She replaced her with another nurse. After about 2 years, she hated that nurse and kicked her off the floor!!!! She had tantrums and tyrads (spelling) like you wouldn't believe....after a little bit of that I thought, forget this I'm outta here!!!

I'll take what I can get!!!!:) It is nice to be able to speak to someone that has had such a great experience...I wish I were you my friend. I WISH I didn't feel the way I do, but unfortunately, I have not been exposed to the great people you have. Don't get me wrong, I know some beautiful nurses that are the sweetiest, kindest, and gentle souls. Have great friends and good working relationships. I think that stress can bring out the worst in people sometimes...but can't take the stress out of nursing...anyways, thanks for making me chuckle!:)

We all have our different opinions on things and that's the way it should be. Its nice that people have differing views on issues; that's what makes debates so great. My posting was not meant to get you to "buy" into my opinion. I just posted my opinion as food for thought and express my views on the subject. I've worked for the last 16 years in a variety roles (nursing and non-nursing) and have the opinion that some women are and can be really mean to each other. Some men can be this way, but overall, I have to say that we women win the title. And by the way...I've seen men get angry in traffic and lots of other places. We all get angry since anger is a part of being a human being. Apprentice is a show to generate "ratings", edited, dubbed, to make a good show. And yes, its natural for smaller groups to develop within a large group of people; but it is not good when the groups of people are talking about "how much makeup the other one is wearing and what a horrible dye job the other one had or what a horrible outfit the other one is wearing". The group of girls my hubbie had the PLEASURE ( ) of taking out on the town, where less than gracious to each other....and made it a very memorable trip....one that the whole company new about and joked about...and still talks about from time to time 5 years after the fact.:chuckle

Personally Pete, I agree with you 100%. Many women are catty, why....because they personalize things...take them to heart. Men aren't that way, they look at something, think about how to change it, hash out any differences, come to a conclusion, and put it behind them. Ask them 10 min utes later what the fight was about and they'll say, "what fight"....that's just he way it is.

From my perspective Tweety, I don't think the poster you directly responded to was wrong. A lot of WOMEN are the pettiest, cattiest people. Yes, we can be! And it really doesn't matter what profession you are in...My husband took a group of clients to Spain on a business trip. Well, it has him and a group of 15 women. Right away, it was obvious that not all the women in the group liked each other and split up into clicks. My husband had to bend over BACKWARDS to please all these women and when he came back, he had an email from the CEO of the company relaying his CONDOLENCES for having to put with all these witches from hell for an entire week!!!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl:

I'm not sure just yet....I was just wondering what the norm is...and it looks like some posters say it depends on what you actually want to do with it. I used to work with a Resp/med-surg floor nurse. She did 1year of floor work after a bsn and then went for her NP/master's....so I guess I wanted opinions from y'all. Thanks for all the posting guys! What's your opininon? Do you think that a nurse practioner or CNS in cardiology should be experienced in critical care?

Hi Spazzy: Haven't started to look for a job just yet. My hubbie and I will be taking a few months off to get acclimated and familiar with our new home and the state. That goodness that will be able to do that. After that, I'm not sure what I'll want to get into. Maybe research, medtronics, case management, ccu, or maybe a little bit of both!!! I get really bored really quick (I just managed to find that out!!!:chuckle ) So I think if I get 2 part time jobs, one clinical and one research, it will keep my mind busy and unbored....if you see anything come up....give me a SHOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
