good for you with the MSN. I graduated in 2010 with my GNP and a secondary degree in Nursing education. I have MS, Crohn's and just within the past week a slipped disk. I thaught that if I had more education that it would help. In my case not really. Now to teach nursing they want a PhD or a DNP.$100,000 in school loans and I work for a nursing lab at a local college for 31,000 a year. I am so discouraged:no:

Just a short question. I am a nurse(rn) and an NP(although I just inactivated my GNP licence-no jobs in NY). Anyway, my husband has a hiatal hernia,but his MD says it isn't called that anymore. I did an online search, but all I come up with is H.H. My husand says the doc said pre-gastric something. (this is also the same md that, when my husband asked about sexual problems he said "I least you are having sex...."). I digress. Anyone hear of another name for H.H. or is this doc full of it?

I am a nursing lab instructor. The ATI videos the student's watch say EVERY IM is to be given Z-track. Does anyone know the EBP behind it? Seems like overkill to me and I have seen some students forget the order of the steps(i.e they insert the needle THEN displace the skin ripping the underlying tissue). Wanted to know the reasons....THanks

Hi, I am an RN(Actually a GNP) with MS. I have had some pretty bad excerbations. The MS doesn;t bother me so much, I've had it for 18 years. Two years ago I was diagnosed with Crohns too. The combo is bad.

For me, no it was not worth it. I love geriatrics, but as a GNP, there are no jobs. When the last of the GNP program graduated(myself included in that 3 people who graduated). I don't feel it was a great program and I have health issues that have become worse since I've graduated. That is me. I wish you the best of everything. You will do fine.

Hi: I worked as faculty at a four year college in the undergrad program. I left and now I am back as a lab coordinator. Since I have been gone(one semester), we have had a giant turn over in faculty or faculty teaching in their non specialty areas. I know it is hard to teach if you have no background in teaching(the college has no orientation program for new staff,however, program coordinators are good about communicating with each other). The students are VERY unhappy. They understand that faculty have left, however, they feel they are not getting the education they are paying for(faculty missing lectures, new faculty unsure of what they are teaching). I really love this college and would like to help in some way. Anything like this happen to anyone out there? If so, what did you do about it? Thank you

I went to school in Rochester, New York first to get my BS in Nursing then my MS as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner(GNP). I have three credits short of a cerficate in Nursing Education. I am an assistant lab coordinator for a college in Buffalo(was faculty but quit because I thought I was going on disability, MS,cancer and Crohn's disease). I could not aford it so now I am trying to live on 31,000 a year, support a disabled husband and pay 100,000 in student loans. I never took the ANCC exam because I was trying to learn the teaching job, then I became very sick. Is it worth going into more debit to take the exam and keep up my GNP licence? I keep looking for jobs but no one wants a GNP with no experience and I don't know as I want to be dual certified. Oh yes, the forms the head of the program is to fill out? She can't because the head of the program is no longer at the school and the GNP program closed due to lack of interest(and jobs). Need some advice please.

I live in NY. I thought it was for all my loans(100,000 for BS and MS) . Only covered 13,000 and had to teach for four years. Have health issues so I had to leave my job(won't get into it, read it under nurses with disabilities on this site)Got a job assisting the faculty in the nursing lab where a used to teach(couldn't find another 4 year college full time position anywhere). I have a YEAR to find one or I am in BIG trouble(credit is shot, was almost homeless, they didn't care). Think long and hard before taking this!

dthfytr: I am so sorry. Polymyositis is nasty. I am sorry you don't have family and friends either. Just A little story. My hubby and I met 25 years ago in Rochester NY(where I am from). We were both divorced and I had three small boys. We lived together and had a son(my 4th, his first and only). As an only child my parents didn't like him(they didn't like any of the men in my life). Between the ex's causing problems and my parents, we broke up. When I thought I would go back with him, my parents said if I did they would never have anything to do with me or my sons again(couldn't do that to the boys, they were great grandparents). I loved my hubby so much and never forgot him. He was the only one who told me that I could do anything i wanted, I was smart. He turned me on to nursing-told me of his experiences,how much he loved it(he didn't finish-another story). Anyway(sorry this is so long) two years ago our son(he was 21 at the time) wanted to meet his dad. We found him, he met his dad, and for use it was like no time had passed. We married in april 2011. Now I have suggested we divorce, he said no he would never do that. I said it would be the same. He said that he lost me once and wouldn't even take a chance. Another thing I found out, I guess many people have tried divorcing for economics. Social services makes sure you have been divorced for two years before they give you any help. If they found that you did just that,(which would be my luck) they have you do jail time. Also, my mom still speaks to me, my dad has completely turned his back on me. again sorry for the long post. Rhi007: you are lucky that you have co workers that are so supportive. I have had job where they are less than friendly.Same with the patients.

I am so sorry. I hope you do get disability. Yes people have told me the same thing, get a job in case management (either through the hospital or insurance copanies. Dear Kcmy: that is exactly who I am supposedly working for-favorite. I have been a nurse for 18 years,but haven't started an IV since 1999. Agree they are dirt bags. I NEVER said I had been a supervisor or experience as one. Promise things they don't deliver. Since November 8th, I have worked ONE shift and been canceled for another, that's it.

been out of work without ANY money for 6 weeks now (last job was per diem). I got one shift in November. I told them I was a charge nurse(I was back in 1999,in school until 2010. Can't find a job as a NP either ,but that is a different story). Was told that I would get time and a half b/c of thanksgiving which would make it 47 an hour. Got to my shift and I was SUPERVISOR( never done it, shaking in my boots. I can take care of people, no problem. Making out the assignment schedule for the day shift, impossible. I don't know who had what assignment(their list was impossible to read). Completed it the best I could. Day shift came in and had a few choice words for me because I didn't do it right. Had to draw blood from a central line,ran around for 20 mins trying to find the stuff to do it. WAs told when I started agency that if I didn't like a place, didn't have to go back. Soon as i got home at 8 am called and told them to get someone else for that night(not going to put my licence on the line b/c I have no experience). WAs told "you can't cancel we have no one else"(they did find someone else) Tried to expain I can't do the am assignment I have no clue (didn't get orientation). Got an half hour lecture from the lady at the agency that "That is what Angency is all about, working on the fly". Only got paid 29.00 an hour for the shift was told sorry about the confusion. Was canceled for the next shift(last friday). Got a call yesterday for wellness clinic. when I signed on, was told nurses in the agency get together and carpool to clinics(I have MS and don't drive,my hubby does). the clinic is 50 miles away from me. I asked the person on the phone about carpooling she said "we don't do that"(different that what the recruiter said and he said the pay was 60/hour) agent on the phone said it was 35/hour. Agency isn't for me!

I agree. As a survivor of a serious attempt, you can't tell anyone if it was worth it. Also the news SAYS the hospital was supportive of the nurse, but you don't know. Once a long time ago, a patient became seriously ill under my care(turns out she was admistering insulin without the staff knowing PLUS had an insulin pump). She had Muchousin's(sp) syndrome. When it cam down to it, I got blamed. Other nurses told me it wasn't my fault But my manager keep throwing it in my face(the patient recovered BTW). I felt so bad that I almost gave up nursing, and my life. My prayers and support goes out to her family.

babynurse: I agree with you. Why is it that the profession that cares can't care about its own. I am not supposed to be working either(MS, Crohn's disease, Thyroid Cancer, Hypoparathyroidism) but I do because my husband and I could not live. He is on SSD because of DDD and arthritis. Sure we could get medicare, but not medicaid. We owe the hospital about $800 alone for his colonscopy(medicare alone). Couldn't work my last job,A floor job(too stressful and was wearing me down). I have not worked in a clinical area since 1999. In New York if you wanted to be with case management, you have to have RECENT(within the last 5 years ) experience. I have over 100,000 dollars in student loans. Part of that is a HRSA Nurse Faculty Loan(you get 85% of your one loan[13,000 for me] if you teach at a four year RN program). I did, but I left thinking I could go back on disability. No. Now I have the college that got me the loan down my neck to pay back $100 a month for a year(so I can get another teaching position). I've tried talking to them. I haven't worked in 2 months. No money for rent,food,meds NOTHING. We will be homeless soon. And these jerks still want to do this until "you get another teaching position. There isn't any in upstate new york. If there is, they want you to have a PhD. Sure, let me take out MORE loans I can't afford to pay back when as in the words of my Gastro NP"It is only a matter of time before she is forced to go on disability. Sorry for the rant, but we ALL paid to go to school and now when WE need the help,all we get is doors slammed in our face. Historically, it has to do with schools of nursing being"Millitant" and being a female occupation. It might have a bit to do with being a man, but moreover, it has to do with "when I was new, I was treated like crap. I will do the same to those up and coming". When I taught nursing, it happened to me. I had a new job, new clinical spot, and when I asked,nicely, to leave meds and AM care to the students on some of the patients, my requests were ignored. I looked like an idiot and the students got nothing out of it. I always told my students"Remember this; the good and bad, and treat those coming up with kindness and understanding

Billing and coding is a speciality, you need a degree for it. Disability nursing for insurance companies(on the phone all day), they want experoence and certification. I just worked in a wound clinic. On a good day, you might have 4 patients, on a bad, you could get 10. I am having a hard time of this because I have MS and Crohn's Disease.

I have been a nurse for almost 20 years and I am finding harder and harder to stay in the profession. I went to school full time when I went back to school for my BSN and masters degrees. I have documentation that stated I could have more time to finish assignments, but I had to keep up with everyone else as far as clinical goes. I've had MS for 15 years, treated for thyroid cancer and have had Crohn's Disease for 2 years. Ask yourself, truthly "Can I do this" BEFORE you go into debt with the student loan companies.If you get your degree and you go on SSD, the loan company CAN garnish your benefits.
