It's all about exposure. I signed up for a GI surgery clinical. After my first day, my vomit/diarrhea phobia was cured. It literally only took one day. The anticipation is worse than the reality. Just get your (gloved) hands in there and do it.

OMG I say that all the time and never thought of it THAT way! That's a day ruiner. haha

OP, at least it wasn't you announcing your occupation to the world. No one likes those people... or the ones who remind everyone that they work in a hospital, when what they really mean is they work in the cafeteria of a hospital.

Just for the record: I'm a very young new-grad working in an ED with a BSN from a fairly prestigious university who passed the computerized NCLEX in 75 questions and then used the Pearson trick, and sometimes I ask really dumb questions. You guys are SO MEAN, and... I LOVE THIS THREAD! We're not all entitled, holier-than-thou, smarter-than-you brats, and thank goodness! Some of us even know that you crusty old bats are just trying to teach us something, not eat us. On behalf of my peers, I thank you!

kimberlyabonita, Ha! I'm a new nurse and I get fooled by that voice. Sometimes, I just can't tell if my coworkers mean what they say or if I, too, have become a victim of the overly-polite-super-obnoxious-sugar-sweet nursey voice sprinkled with a twist of sarcasm. I can only hope that someday, I will perfect that art. =)

I don't want to give away a whole lot of info... but, recently, I was on my unit as a visitor with my grandfather. In a near code situation with another patient, I helped a colleague by bringing her a supply she couldn't find in the room. Now, as I think about it more, I am totally. freaking. out. Did I do something totally inappropriate/unprofessional/maybe illegal? I would never provide direct patient care when off the clock or out of uniform, but what about bringing a colleague something she needed. I knew where it was and it was easier/faster/more efficient during this dangerous situation for me to just go get it for her. Thoughts?
