New Grad RN.... work options that do not involve a hospital
amzyRN - not everyone can deal with the anxiety that comes up in healthy ways, and I don't agree with you that it's a good idea for everyone to "stick it out." I just don't think we can make a statement like that and have it fit all nurses. I work med/surg right now. I sought it out because I only had 9mo. of OR experience, and I wanted to go back for my NP. I felt like I should have an idea of what adult/geriatric patients were dealing with. I. Hate. It. I love my coworkers, the teamwork, and there are times I feel like I've done a damned good job, but when a patient of mine begins to crash, or I get hit or spat on by a combative, confused patient - I realize all over again that this is not my sweet spot. I realized 2 months in that this was not going to be my thing. And I began to plot my exit. The things I took into account were: how short staffed the night shift was at the time, how flaky I'd look with such a short length of time on the job on my resume, getting more experience so I could really get a feel for what might be "my thing." I'm interviewing right now for a community health position. It totally fits my way of looking at nursing - I think hospitals do an ineffective job of treating patients effectively across the board. And I think the best way to address this issue is to keep people out of the hospital, by educating them, providing them quality care at home, supporting their caretakers, and locating services to keep them in their home environments. Had I left at 2 months, I wouldn't have been so sure of myself, and so sure of the path *I* wanted to take to contribute to our profession. Now, at 6 months, I'm ready to leave, provided I get the job offer. If not, there's another lined up right after it! (THANK GOD!) And I was really moved by the nurse with 18 years experience who said she sometimes still felt anxious and nauseous before her shifts. I'm really glad to know that's normal! Thank you for sharing that with us!

Actual discussion between scrub and surgeon
First case of the day - Me - Doc, do you need want this marcaine on the field, or will you use it before I prep the patient? Doc - No, the patient is blocked. I never use marcaine when they're blocked. Me - *reads "always uses marcaine, even when pt. blocked" on the preference card* Second case of the day - Doc - where is the marcaine? Why isn't it on the field? Me - it's right here. I didn't dispense it because the patient is blocked. Doc - What does that have to do with it?

UT Houston (Fall 2014 applicants)
People in one class will join the facebook groups for all the other classes as well. That way, they can receive guidance from the classes ahead of them, and give guidance to the classes after them. It's very cooperative and supportive. In our Summer class last year, we started with approx 130. We're down to about 110 now. Some students decided it wasn't for them, and a very few weren't able to make the grades to continue (but a VERY few are in that group). Hope this helps!

UT Houston (Fall 2014 applicants)
Hi guys! I'm a current UTHSC Houston BSN student. I will graduate in August of this year. I wanted to weigh in though, and say that yes, they send out acceptances in waves. I got mine really early in the process, on Feb 5. People were getting accepted all the way through the beginning of May, and the class began on May 20. Also, don't be surprised if some of you who are done with your pre-reqs by the end of this semester are invited to begin early, in the summer session. That does happen if the summer session loses members for whatever reasons. The admissions office is very overwhelmed, and getting a quick response to emails and phone calls is pretty much unheard of. I'm sorry to say that, because I know EXACTLY how frustrating and frightening that can be. Good luck to you all! Shannon

Lana said that the facebook group is closed, but it is searchable.

UTHSC-Houston BSN Summer 2013
I posted on the Facebook page, asking Lana if she had any ideas how to make the group findable. I'll keep up with that. I think there are only 16 of us on that group so far. Need more warm bodies! LOL

UTHSC-Houston BSN Summer 2013
I just logged on today and saw that I was accepted!!! WAS NOT EXPECTING TO HEAR SO SOON!!! It totally shocked me to see the "accept/decline" button! I submitted my application in September, but didn't take my HESI until Nov. 20. Has someone set up a facebook page for accepted BACC2 students for Summer 2013? Good luck to those of you still waiting - Hope to see you there! Shannon

UTHSC-Houston Spring 2013
So the application deadline for the summer accelerated program was December 1. I just got my fall semester grades, and all of my GPAs have gone up. I'm going to send them an updated transcript asap, but I was wondering if they will have these updated grades to go by when they go over the applications? Hmm... just thinking out loud. So now, my stats are as follows: nursing prereqs - 3.83 science - 3.67 overall undergraduate (and I have a B.A.) - 3.76 Hesi of 95.4% and an 860 critical thinking. If I can't get in, I'm going to take organic chemistry and just go to medical school! It seems like it's easier to get in to medical school than this nursing school!!! No, I wont do that... I don't want to be a doctor. I want to be a nurse. Sorry... anxiety is getting the best of me here! Probably a hangover from finals stress.....

UTHSC-Houston Spring 2013
Hi all! Who is applying for the 2nd degree BSN starting in May? I've applied for that, and am now waiting.... From what I've read, admissions decisions aren't made until mid-April! Gah! I got a 95.6 on my HESI, an 860 on the critical thinking. nursing prereqs - 3.745 science gpa - 3.5 (freakin' chemistry!) overall gpa (for BA) - 3.676 I had been taking it for granted that I'd get in, but I've been humbled quite a bit after reading this thread! I will probably apply to TWU by the February deadline as well, but that means I've got to take the TEAS, which I've been told is harder. Another GAH! looking forward to chatting with you guys. Freaking out while waiting is much more tolerable with others who are freaking out while waiting. ~Shannon

UTHSC Summer 2012 accelerated program
Those of you who were accepted to the accelerated program - would you mind sharing your stats? I'm applying to begin in the summer of 2013, and have heard so many horror stories about perfect GPAs, perfect HESI scores, and then not being admitted.... What? I don't get it. So if you wouldn't mind sharing, that'd be great! I just took my HESI today, so from what I remember, my scores were vocab - 98 grammar - 96 reading comp. - 96 math - 94 a&P - 94 my overall GPA is a 3.67, science is a 3.5, and nursing prereq is a 3.72. sheesh. I'm stressed out!
