  1. If management wont address the issues and nurses are feeling "threatened" then WHY do you want to continue to work there? I know you dont want to hear get another job but seriously think about it.
  2. I gues Im completely baffled why this nurse is still working there. This is part of her job and if the DON/management still has you working with her then I wouldnt want to be there period. Says alot to me about the facility. Seriously.
  3. I guess if your considering out of LPN field then you need to think about what you want to do and can do. Personally I dont understand going through all this training and throwing it out the window. Your license is what you make it. Ive worked LTC, Acute care, management/supervisory and now work for VA Health Care system. So really you can do just about anything if your committed to the work/license you have.
  4. If you dont like or feel that who is orienting you is doing what they are suppose to do then say something to your DON or whomever you report to. You need to learn and do. Find your own flow. It makes it hard when you have someone crummy and disinterested in traiing you. You just have to advoicate for yourself in this reguard. And if you dont feel your getting the response you need then look elsewhere for a job
  5. If you feel you need experience to get your skills up to par then find experience. Look for and apply for a per diem job where you will be using the skills you feel you lost. trust me a rehab or nursing home will hire you and orient you. I work a full time job in mental health and I still work per diem at my last job (rehab) to keep my skills in check. Where there is a will, there is a way.
  6. Thank you so much for answering! Iam wondering if I should pursue a degree in health care informatics or some other computer science. I dont have any work experience in IT but have used computers plenty and am quite capable of catching on. And yes your assumption is right about my asking do you have to be an RN. The job market for lpn's always feels so limited.
  7. Hi there! I have done lots of online research and came upon the field of nursing informatics. Im not a tech pro but Im a quick learner and have used excel, powerpoint and all those fancy programs many moons ago in different occupations. I have been an LPN for 9 years now and have experience in subacute and LTC. Previously to obtaining my license I worked for 18+years in theaddictions/mental health field. I have applied to numerous RN programs and have either been denied admission because the class is full or placed on a waitlist that has a huge wait time extending into 3+years. As Im sure some can understand its very, very frustrsting. I turned to excelsior online lpn-rn program. However my question is if its necessary for me to have to be an RN to get into this field? Needless to say my desire of pursuing my RN has faded. I live analyzing charts, documentation and technology. I have thought of applying to study for a BA in health informatics or just obtaining an AAS in computer technology. Any website i have consulted says rn's are required in the health informatics field. Is this so?? Also as a side note my facility is in the dark ages of pen and paper! so no IT dept there. Also for additional info I want a change from bedside nursing and want to do something much different but still have my lpn license valued. Any help, advice, direction greatly appreciated!!
  8. for any prerequs you could look into a local community college....many have online classes....just a thought
  9. sorry for many typos...my keys are a'sticking
  10. I agree Re: Sallie Mae. They are not a very good complany at all. The bottom line for them is PROfit. And while you may have an offer for a lower interest rate...beware because if its not fixed...then it can go up..I mean sky high up. Add in fees and all that mentioned blah blah blah and your paying much more. It is entirely unforunate that ne cannot receive federal student aide for this program....given that it is recognized, etc. I had, once upon a time way back when, taken my loans out with Sallie Mae...this is when they were part of the US governments dept of education. Then they seperated and well..they did whatever they wanted...werenot bound by the governments ruling when it came to student loan debt. This past year I put alot of effort in moving my original loans to the US dept of education where I was locked into an income based repayment program. My payment is based on my filed income each year. Also too...if I commit ten years of public service....reguardless of what my education was....I will have my loans forgiven within tend years. Currently under this program I qualify. I unfortunetly have one small loan which was private left with Sallie Mae. I cannot stand them at all. You geneally only have three years wroth of foreberance/special payment option times. So you really and truly need to read the fine print and do your research. When I went for my LPN I paid for it out of my own money. It was difficult but I was set against a loan. I am looking into the EC program...and am also worried about the finaces of it. But...I feel....in looking at it...that its wrth it if I can pay for as much of it myself as I can...and hey thats where working an nursing agency shift here and there pays off ($$). Please do you research..and be careful and wise with the money. I have learned the hard way...seriously. Best of luck
