ED basics, as if there was such a thing...
If by "NTG" you mean Nitro. We were taught in EMT school yes everytime. Unless they had taken any Sexually Enhancement Drugs a prior number of hours before. Not sure if that applies to nurses or not. BUt i thought i would just say it.

I would def have to say the show "Scrubs", its spot on! lol no but I have to agree with you on E.R.

What field of nursing are you interested into going into?
I tip my hat to you. Geriatrics are not my forte. ER/Peds/Burn Unit is where I reside.

Have you ever been paralyzed by fear?
In one of my clinical rotations when i was in EMT school earlier this year we had a multiple stab wound case. And you know, this was our first clinical rotation where something actually happened. Now i didnt freeze, I actually was one of the first to rush into the chaos. But half of my class froze outside, saying things like "the person is already dead", "no point in going int there" and a few other things. it was my guess that they were afraid, or had something that was preventing them from being around all the blood. (which shouldnt be the case I know, but some people cant take it yet they find there way into medical school. Why? Beats me, but anyway as I rushed to start CPR, I kind of blacked out, or left my body idk how to explain it very well. But all i could do was look into the patients, eyes as i did cpr, sounds werent there. I could faintly here everyone screaming for things, but i felt like i was on drugs or something. Later did my instructor tell me thats one of the adrenaline rushes you get in the ER. But the patient was eventually pronounced dead, and as I walked out of the room (feeling defeated) everything slowly returned back to normal. ANd I noticed the large amount of block all over my gown and hands. So I wouldnt say i was paralyzed in fear. But i was definitely out of the world. The whole time, my mind was saying. Do something, what needs to be done, how can i help. And since Im practically useless in a situation like that besdies, changing the EKG, and CPR I really couldnt do much. But i can see how one could get paralyzed in high stress, tense situations. Just my

17 Year Old Boy wanting to be a nurse. Help?
Hey Greg! Time for a little Heart to Heart from someone in your shoes. Well close. I also live in South FLorida, I am 18 years old, ill be 19 in a number of days. Also with the hopes of pursuing Nursing. I start Broward College in Jan. And I have a tough schedule ahead of me. My advice man, is to get those grades up. There is no use feeling bad for yourself, accept mistakes and move on. Learn from them! And never let anyone tell you, you cant do it. Try your hardest, study your best and dream of success. Your still young, we youngins will shape the world and our future! We have time on our side so we have to make the best of it. No one said it will be easy, everything worthwhile requires work. And with some, it may require more work than others. I wish you the best!

A bit frustrated in school/nursing career
Hey, I saw this topic and decided to post me 2 cents. I am 18 years old, 19 next month (woo!). And for me the expereince isnt really the same. You say you have read others experiences right? Well, how heavy of research have you done on the nursing career? Is it truly something you want to do? There should be some motivating factor somewhere that can help push you along. Like me personally: Burn Victim, major motivator. To give back what was given me. Grew tons of respect for Nurses and what they do. Medical Family, 99.9% of my family is in the medical field. So it wasnt a hard choice to what i was influenced to. The knowledge, I love all things medical, not to mention learning for me is fun. Crazy huh? Love for people, yes the world isnt the happiest place. But I have a strong desire to help people. Its just who I am. So i mean, find things that will make you want to study and be the best you can. Dont always rely on others experience because your time in school may be similiar or nothing like theirs at all. But I do wish you luck and look forward to hearing back!

The Emotional aspect to Nursing, how do you cope?
Yeah , I see what your saying. Thanks for the reply also! I know death happens, I dont freeze up at all, I actually am able to work efficiently in a high stress, fast environment. Its just people dying sucks no matter how you slice it. Ill have to develop the best outlook for me when the time comes. Even though I think I have a pretty caring one now. lol yes it made perfect sense! And thanks for replying, and i dont see it as cold. I too think i am sometimes cold but then i reealize i cant let everything get to me or i wont be able to do my job correctly lol. But i do love my patients in the sense that as my EMT teacher told us to do "View them like family" and i guess that shapes my mindset alot.

The Emotional aspect to Nursing, how do you cope?
Thanks for your response, and I agree with everything you said. But, when I related my experience in the ER it was of no intention to say that Ive seen some crazy stuff. It was more so, to say I know alot of things will happen in my career as a Nurse. But if i made it seem like Ive seen it all lol I am sorry its not what i meant. And yeah, in EMT school we went over the different programs that were avilable to EMS when things got a bit overboard. Though i have yet to see much or utilize it, I have no pride issues of going to help when its available to me.
