I bought my scrubs and supplies at www.medisave.net. I bought a labcoat, but you really don't need it (personally, I would invest in another set of scrubs instead). You should really buy your books online because they are WAY cheaper than the bookstore. But if you want to get them directly from the bookstore, then you can order them online from the UMB bookstore. Also, you have to order the patches for the scrub top from the bookstore and your nametags. I would suggest that you do that ASAP because the nametags take a while to get there. You don't have to pay the shipping cost. If you are at SG, they will send them to Kathie Dever and you pick them up from her.

CONGRATS to everyone who got in. Good Luck to all those still waiting to get in. And Don't give up to all those who didn't get in this time. I am currently a first semester student at the Shady Grove campus. Some pearls of wisdom passed down to me and now I'm giving them to you: 1. For your Littmans stethoscopes, I bought mine on www.medisave.net and right now they are going for $67.00 engraving AND shipping are FREE. It's a good deal! They also have scrubs at decent prices. 2. Don't buy any "supplies" (i.e. pen lights, reflex hammers, etc) they will all be given to you on your first day of Fundamentals lab. 3. DO The READING for FUNDAMENTALS over the summer. That's the one class where reading the book WILL save your grades. Read AS MUCH as you can ahead of time and take notes. YOU WON'T REGRET THIS! 4. The program is A LOT of work. Sometimes you will feel like it is TOO MUCH. So it is very important that you keep the focus and know what your motivations are. There will be lots of laughs, uncomfortable moments, humbling moments and crying fits. Before the first round of exams, my friend asked me "How are you doing?" and I just bursted into tears. Luckily, his sister is a nursing student so he didn't think it was strange at all. Those were my only tears shed for the semester but I'm sure there will be lots more when the 2 years are up. 5. If you have the time, get involved with other campus activities (like NSNA/MANS/UMANS). NSNA is the National Student Nurses Association, MANS is Maryland Association of Nursing Students and UMANS is University of MD Assoc of Nursing Students. You are automatically a member of UMANS however, NSNA has a fee of $35 for 1 year membership. They give Scholarships and other benefits so, it's worth checking out. If you are working (I worked this semester, but won't be working next semester) IT IS HARD to get involved in stuff and work, especially if u aren't on a flexible schedule (my bosses are very supportive, so I was lucky). 6. YOU CAN DO THIS! If you ever want to talk or cry, look me up; I'll be happy to hear your woes and/or triumphs.

TEAS V- Exemplary, Advanced, Proficient or Basic?
Some schools only use GPA to qualify the applicant i.e. if you have the minimun GPA required then you are welcome to apply and they won't consider it for much else. They use the TEAS score as the deciding factor and basically, rank the students from highest to lowest and pick the top students until all seats are filled. I know that's what MC does. Some school take a different approach. BUT to remain competitive, you may want to retake the exam. It's my advice if you want to have a fighting chance against everyone else. Good luck

UMSON pre-req question...can someone help? :)
lol...I guess it helped that it is his second BS and he has a maters also ...But I am finishing up my pysch and stats...Just focus on getting A's on the remaining classes before you apply so the transcript looks good and then the TEAS score is important. I didn't really volunteer but I do work for a well known nonprofit so that may have helped me in that department. As long as you application is well-rounded I don't think you will have a problem

UMSON pre-req question...can someone help? :)
I am assuming that you are trying to apply for the fall. I got accepted into the spring 2012 class and I am finishing up my pre-reqs before that. I have a fried who also got accepted for spring 2012 and hadn't taken micro, chem or psych. So, go ahead and apply. As long as your pre-reqs are able to be completed before the start of your first semester. Good luck!

How much time did you take to study for the TEAS?
I studies for about 2 weeks using a variety of books (Kaplan, Peterson's, and anything else that said TEAS on the cover) from the public library. I didn't buy the ATI study guide. I did all the practice tests in the other books and scored in the 99th percentile. The exam is not that bad if you do well on the practice tests. I actually did a lot better on the actual exam than on the practice tests. Hope this helps....Good Luck!

UMB Shady Grove Survival Tips
For next semester there is a time conflict with Research and Fundamentals Lab so I figure I can take research in the summer and take informatics in the first semester. But if you've heard that it is difficult to keep up in informatics without any experience which class would u sugguest I substitute instead?

UMB Spring 2012
I know that . But we don't need to provide an independent background check to the school as hayyy was suggesting. We will be told when it is required for the clinical site and then we may have to pay for it. But the clinical site will handle the particulars regarding the company that does it, etc. And I would imagine if they drug test you, they would want to do that themselves also. So I wouldn't worry about trying to figure out which company you are going to use.

I don't think we have to do the background check independently....unless I read something incorrectly.
