  1. @made - I am curious where you received your information. I am not doubting it necessarily, just surprised is all.
  2. Fair enough. Enjoy your day :)
  3. That's okay. Perhaps I shouldn't go into details as I sense combativeness :/ It was really not my intention to appear in front of a firing squad. The good thing is: we all have jobs and there are plenty of jobs all over Canada to be had!
  4. I've never heard of ICU. I will look them up! Thank you :) Unfortunately, due to my well endowed upper half, I have to try tops on so online has never been a viable option for myself. I swear, I should just fix my sewing machine and make my own again.
  5. Wait, @Fiona59 - You're saying the shoe sale in Edmonton isn't nearly as legendary as Van's? Oy vey. I smell a trip back home in April! Are there no scrub stores here in Edmonton? You're from the lower mainland, you know what I mean, right? There were several on W. Broadway, always some by major hospitals such as Image Care, Pro One etc.
  6. They want you reviewing each chapter, most likely. You of course have to stay up on your readings (we had to) But we also paid most attention to the key terms, learning objectives, chapter overview/summaries.
  7. holy ignorance, batman! it has nothing to do with their views of gender roles, it is about their views of modesty.
  8. interesting - in my governing body, it IS the nurse's job to question ALL orders. If we give a medication, after the doctor prescribed it, and there is a huge adverse effect, the error falls on the nurse; not the doctor.
  9. My husband thinks he's Superman; I don't tell him otherwise.
  10. whoa, whoa, whoa. Care aides don't give pills, insert catheters or do injections - these are done by NURSES. What exactly is your (American) definition of a CNA? Where I am, CNAs are Certified Nursing Assistants - they toiled patients; change their pads, bed sheets, bed pans; help with feedings etc.
  11. When I did my care aide course (Resident Care Attendant, CNA etc. *it's all the same thing*) our first instructor, on our first day, lead with "You are all nurses." I was SHOCKED! I was going to school to wipe bums and dress the elderly; I was being called a nurse and I was flattered, flattered, flattered! In all fairness, it IS a nursing role. Nursing has evolved, and to my grandma, I was a bonafide nurse. Since becoming an "actual" nurse, I see the difference but I let them have it. Most patients don't see the difference between care aides and RNs. They want the one who fluffs their pillows and/or hands them their pills to talk to. It's frustrating because doctors are SOOOO clear cut. Nurses, well, we are all in one giant category ranging from minimal experience and education from certificates to degrees to doctorates. I understand you're upset and it sometimes upsets me too. This is okay. You , and we, have all worked hard to obtain our NURSE title. But, you know what they say: imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.
  12. I worked my reg. 12 hour shift but was begged to do another back-to-back due to lack of staffing. By about 5 minutes home from my 30 minute commute, I wondered why my hair and face was wet ... I put the top down on my convertible.
  13. wow!! I have never heard of this - mind you, I'm from Vancouver. Interesting topic to say the least. On one hand, I agree that nurses, and all healthcare professionals, should be gleaming examples. On the other, wrong, wrong, wrongity wrong.
  14. When I worked at Richmond (BC) Hospital there was a handwashing rule in place. Hand sanitizers were placed in each room and every 6 meters in the hospital. We had to handwash between taking vitals! I'd chalk the inquiry and concern to good practice :)
  15. I would leave a paper trail. Ask your alert patients if they would like their door closed. If they say yes, close it and chart their request. I would also chart that you closed the door, as per "protocol" on your confused patients to cover your behind... keeping in mind you are continuing to do your rounds. Would this work for you?
