I believe everyone looking for a job will surely find one. I did not have one for awhile and then boom I just started getting interviews and offers. I surely hope it will look up for everyone soon! Biker nurse- I think I would stick with the ICU but that is just my opinion. I am scared of what may happen there. Good luck with your decision. I am sure you will make the right choice :)

Thanks Packersfan and S|1011. I will make a list of pros and cons for both when I go on Monday. I hate holding off one for the other but I guess that is what I have to do until I know for sure.

Hi all, I need some guidance. I went for a job interview today and it is doing senior home care. Originally it was a full time position and as we were talking during the interview it came up that I was in my FNP program. So I expressed to her that I really want to pursue this and start working as an FNP when I am done. I told her it will take me two years to finish but in reality it will not. I think if all goes according to plan I should finish by this time next year. Anyhow, she then said well maybe you can do part time or per diem with us and we will train you the same way we would have trained you as if you were hired as a full time. I told her that this would be something that I would be interested in. The pay is $36 per hr which is fine with me. I would not be traveling to the seniors home they are all in an assisted living facility and would be doing the home care there but would be traveling throughout the three sites. So I left off with that interview and just said ok if I get it I get it, if not oh well. I get home and then I get another call from one of my recruiters I have been working with and she got me an interview for Monday 6/20 and I told her I would go. She said that they are really looking for someone to work in Westchester and bronx doing homevisits. She said that they are really interested in my resume and want to meet me ASAP. So I told her I will go Monday. While I am on the phone with the recruiter, the lady from senior home care calls me and asks me when can I start that they are willing to take me on. I told her next week some time. She really caught me off guard. I did not know what to say and that was the first thing that popped out of my mouth. I told my recruiter what happened and she asked me to still go on this interview which I would anyway because maybe she could work out a schedule with me if the other one is part time. The interview on monday is willing to train as well on how to do their paperwork etc... Then if that don't beat all, I was working with someone else from a long time ago and he called asking me can I start somewhere next week. He left a message and I did not call back yet.... What do you do in situations like this. When I decide to take something or say I am interested then other offers start coming in. I mean I am not complaining because I know times are rough, but I want to be happy where I decide to go. Just looking for some advice from my allnurses family....

I am sorry you have to go through this. I think everyone has been through something like this one time or another. It is just such as shame that these jobs do not tell you upfront what the job really entails. I have gone through something like that just this past month. I accepted a job and I have done case management before. I was told that my job is an RN trying to "decipher" whether the clients I was working with will need to go back to work for their welfare benefits or did they submit sufficient documentation regarding their illness. That was alright with me because I wanted to do case management. But then when I accepted the job, there were just little things that I did not like about the job that was not told to me during the interview. I was told the job was 9-5pm and then I find out that the job was 9-5:30 which was ok, but then with a 30 min lunch break. I said well alright I guess I can deal with that. Then they tell me that there is mandatory overtime and I explained that I have to go home to my daughter and pick her up from afterschool by 6pm. Everyone had to stay between 6-8 or 9pm. Don't get me wrong, they paid you for the hrs but I did not care, I needed to be home with my children. Also, the last straw for me was that I was not even doing any RN work really. It was more social work. There were social workers there as well and we all were picking the clients up from the same pile and calling them. I was questioning them, what is the difference between myself and the social worker??? Why do you need an RN if I am asking the same questions as the social workers were. I was so disgusted because I came from a social worker background and did not want to go back there again. So needless to say I resigned after 2 weeks. All I want is the job to be honest with me and tell me what to expect. But I guess if they tell the truth, they won't get the position filled Good Luck to you and I hope everything works out for the best for you.

I just resigned from a job where I only worked for two weeks. I personally sent an email because I know I never want to be hired at this organization again. It was an office job and the reason why I did that is because they lied about the job, the hours, mandatory overtime and only getting a thirty min lunch break and when I took the job they told me the job was 9-5pm and then when I get into the job, the hours were 9-5:30pm. So we actually were not getting a lunch break and we worked with a very hard population. We all needed a break to take a breather from the clients that we serviced. There were other situations that I can't get into it will take too long to type out. But anyway, I always let my supervisor know from past employment in person that I was leaving and gave them a letter in their hand. With this company, I was downright disgusted! I know I will never work for this organization again so I sent the supervisor an email and left that day. It was wrong but I could not work there for another two weeks either. Give them a letter in person because you never know if you want to go back or not unless you are in a situation like me.

Hi there, This is not advice but I am just telling you what my experience was in NY. I don't know what state she is in but I used to be a child protective specialist before becoming a nurse and in the state of NY having an open case does not bar you from any type of employment unless the case is found to be true and you are working with children. Your name will be run through the system and if the case was found to be true then her name will go in the database and everytime they run it when she seeks employment with children they will not hire her. It has to do more with the job itself hiring someone I don't think it would have anything to do with the BON because it is not a criminal conviction unless it is tried through a criminal court. These cases are heard by family court. I had to testify numerous times in cases where I had to take children away from their parents (which by the way was VERY HARD!) and if the child is automatically removed because the worker saw there is imminent danger, the parents name automatically is in the database. When that happens they work with the parent to get things up to par so that if the child is removed they will get their child back. The goal is to reunite the family. But if the worker is in the home and telling her these are the requirements that she must do in order to satisfy the agency, then she must do so and everything should go ok and the case closes. I had a woman who is a school counselor and I got called in to do an investigation and she had a case that was found to be true but she had been working for one year at this place and a case was called because her son was not going to school. They said she was neglecting him educationally but he was 17 and cutting school so in my opinion that is not her fault. The child says they are going to school and when they leave you don't know where they are actually going until the school calls you. So every situation is different. She should called the BON but I think it has too do really more so with the job that hires you. She can still work with adults I know that for sure. She has to check with the state. Like I said my experience is with NY. Thanks for letting me ramble on because bringing up this subject made me remember why I left child protection and go into nursing. I rather work with children to heal them and not disrupt the family even though they are in unsafe situations. I rather not be the one to do that and would never ever go back to do that job again. It is too dangerous. I have been threatened and followed to my car by parents whose child I have taken away from them.

I attend Saint Joseph's. They don't have ACNP but just FNP. The reason why I like it is because it is self paced. You get 15 weeks to finish a class but I do it as fast as I can to get to another class. I usually take 7 weeks to finish a class. Even though it is self paced, I have never had a problem getting in touch with a teacher or getting help from them. They give back excellent feedback on your papers so when you are ready to submit another one you don't make the same mistake. I am taking my 2nd class through them starting today. The school accepted two classes from my other university that I transferred from so I have a little bit of a head start. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Yes, the way I planned out my schedule because the school took two classes already and I finished one last week and I am starting one tomorrow which is leadership. I have two more out of the 5 cores to do which I think I will do together after I finish leadership. Then you go onto the NP classes which is the advanced pharm, health assessment and pathophysiology. After that hopefully onto clinicals. I am doing the classes like I did my MBA classes. Each were 7 weeks long and that is how I am doing my schedule for the FNP.

Hi. I am in the FNP program. I just started but I had a head start because the school took 2 of my core classes from my other university. I just finished nursing informatics and will start nursing leadership on Tuesday. So far I like the classes and I like the way that the classes are self paced. You get 15 weeks to finish a class but I finished informatics in 6 weeks. I plan on doing the same thing for the next class and possibly would like to take 2 classes after leadership and I will be done with the core classes and can go on to the NP classes which I am looking forward to. Hopefully I can finish by next year.

Hi, I have 2 years of medical school from the caribbean and I put it on my resume because I was a nurse first but did not finish because of family problems. My situation was that I had to include it because I have a two year gap in my work history and I have to explain that gap. I have gone on interviews and it has not stopped me in obtaining employment. I just got hired for a job two weeks ago and because the job was not what the job description said ( I was doing social work in stead of nursing case management, I quit.) This was not explained to me during the interview and it was other issues that were not to my satisfaction and found out after I got hired. I thought I was going to be only doing nursing case management and I could not take it. I stayed for two weeks and quit. I then found another job in which I start June 6th and they just asked me about medical school as well but I got the job. The only thing that I would think about is that since you have 3 years of med school under your belt and you say that you left due to financial problems, will your potential employer think you will leave to finish medical school since you will be making money now. I have been asked the same question, but I tell them that I am pursuing nurse practitioner because it fit my family lifestyle because my children need me to be home with them not on call and gone all the time. The two places that hired me accepted that answer because I got hired :) . I am not too sure if disclosing it will affect you because it depends on how the person interviewing you take the answer. I think if you do disclose it, I would just tell them that you found it was not for you and decided to go the nursing route not that you had financial problems because then they might think that you will leave your job to finish medical school. And as Caliotter3 stated, I did put on my resume my school and next to it 2008-2010. Good Luck in whatever you decide.

Morlanmom- I think after your first 6 credits and are matriculated you probably can take 2 classes per semester. I asked the admissions rep and he told me that they want to know that we can handle the classes and that is why they start you off with one class in the beginning. It is self paced but you have 15 weeks to complete the course but I believe you can ask for an extension if you need more time. I just prefer to do each class in 7 weeks because I am used to that pace. I am also just going by what the admissions rep said that by seeing how we do in the first two classes one at a time, then we can take more than one class for that semester. Canchaser- I had taken 6 credits at my old school and St. Joseph's accept only 6 credits from a previous school. Good Luck everyone!

Hi, I just started at St. Joseph's College. From what I understand, they put you in nursing informatics course first. The letter that I received from admissions stated that my acceptance is provisional and once I receive a B in my first 6 credits of classes then I will be put on a matriculated status. So far I have an A in nursing informatics. So I don't think maintaining a B would be hard. I was sent a copy of my degree audit and it shows all the classes that I have to take and what classes was transferred in from my other university. I believe you have to take the nursing cores first and then go onto the FNP classes like pharm, path, etc.... I am almost done with informatics I have two more units to finish up. There were 5 units to do all together with a papers to write and self quizzes. It took me 7 weeks to do one class and then I am going to sign up for another class at the end of the month and do that in 7 weeks. I am used to that pace because with my MBA classes online all classes were 7 weeks long and thats how I want to continue with this program so hopefully I can finish in under 2 years. I will find out at the end of this month what class I am going to take next. I know my friend had to take conceptual nursing next but I was given credit for that class so I am not sure what is next for me. I hope this helps :)

I agree with Sunny life will bring you curve balls because I for sure had them and still do. I am an RN and when I worked awhile in nursing I went to medical school for two years. I have the basic sciences done and all I would have to do is clinicals but my daughter was diagnosed with a learning disability. I went to a foreign medical school and clinicals will not be in the state of NY where I am from, they are mostly in Florida, Georgia and Chicago at this time. I choose not to leave my daughter because of her problems because I know she need me around she is only 7 years old. I am so glad that I have my nursing experience under my belt as well as doing 2 semesters of my NP program before I left for medical school. All I am doing now is finishing up my NP program so that I can be around for my two children especially the little one. I really feel so much better in my decision because for my situation, my family comes first and if I cannot finish what I have started then it is alright with me. I just want my family happy. All I am saying is do your research and do the best you can with the information that has been put in front of you. We all have hopes and dreams and sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't. I don't feel that what happened is a bad thing, it just makes me stronger and makes me think about what is more important in life. Good luck in your endeavors and I know you will make the right decision and if you find out it is not what you want to do, there is still time to change your mind and do what is right for you. :) Take care!!

Hi, I am feeling the say way as you are. I have been at a hospital for about 9 days. My orientation is for five weeks. I have 10 days left since I am doing 12 hr shifts now. I am not comfortable in this place at all. When I first got there I went around with my preceptor and that was cool. But the second day, they just threw me to the lions!!! I had 7 patients. I think this is ridiculous. I have no idea what I am doing. Don't get me wrong, my preceptor is really nice and is trying to do her best, but the NM is making her charge nurse all the time, giving her patients to deal with and she has me too. I don't think it is fair to me or her. She can't devote time for me to teach me what she really wants to. We were talking about this last night. She said how can she devote time to me and the other orientee if they keep giving her assignments? I don't feel comfortable and if that don't beat all, the NM told me that I was starting on nights and I know there is not alot of support at night. I don't feel comfortable and I am not putting my license on the line for no one. I did not pay all this money and go through my program to get screwed up on orientation. I am leaving. I already made up my mind. This is a really busy med surg floor where people are coding all the time. If I wanted to work in the ER, I would have applied for the ER. This is not a good match for me. So if you don't feel comfortable, I would leave. That's just my opinion. My gut is telling me not to stay, so I am not. Thanks for letting me vent! Lashawn

Hi, I took the online course from NYSNA and it was a breeze. If you are planning to take the certification for NY, child abuse is not the only certificate you have to get. You have to also do the infection disease one as well. They offer that at the NYSNA website as well. Every job I went to, they asked for both certificates. Like I said, it was a breeze. You pay the fee, take the class, answer the questions and you can print your certificate after you pass. NYSNA will also send it electronically to the education department, but just in case print the certificate and have it for your records. Welcome to NY!!!

Update here!!! I was just hired at Montefiore Medical Center. I am just glad to start working. I start Feb. 5th on a regular medical floor. I just went through the whole physical thing and I have OSHA training on Monday. This is very exciting for me. I have heard good things about the hospital. I hope what I heard is true!!!! Hi, I interviewed at NYU medical center. I called back the nurse recruiter and she said that the area that I was looking for which was postpartum the nurse mgr was still interviewing candidates. So I guess that hospital is out. She did not even offer me any other area. So I got turned off by the whole situation. I had to keep calling them back as well. The only way I got her to call me back was by telling her that I had to give another hospital an answer but I really wanted to work at NYU. Did I really have to lie just to get her to call me back. I used to be a recruiter and the way she handled the whole situation was not good. It seemed as if all my friends that went over there to be interviewed was just lost in the bunch and forgotten about. I have no idea what is going on over there. I did have an interview at Montefiore Medical Center. I passed the medication test and did the whole application process. I am now just waiting for the nurse manager from a med/surg floor to call me back. I want to be interviewed before the Feb. 5th start date. This is so frustrating. I feel like I am getting penalized because I went to an out of state school. I also feel like there are just too many ppl here in the city and too much competition. That is why I went to a NJ nursing school in the first place because of that. Now that I am done, I can't find a job. This is really making me upset. I have two kids and they suffered enough with me going through an accelerated program and not working. Thanks for letting me vent!!!! Lashawn

I have been looking for a month and a half now and I still don't have a job either. I am a new grad and passed the NCLEX in December. There are a whole bunch of positions at Mount Siani and Columbia Presybeterian Hospital but I have not got called yet. I have been on some interviews and one sad interview was for a dialysis nurse in brooklyn. They were only paying 50K and wanted you to sign a two year contract with them for them training you for 8 weeks. I told them I have a BSN and another bachelors degree and you only want me to get paid 50K and sign a two year contract. It is not always about the money but I think that is just plain ridiculous.

I just used the Saunders book. I did all the questions in the book and then did all the questions on the CD. I also took Kaplan but I don't think I was using any of their strategies unless I was doing it unconsciously. I just read the question two times and then the answers two times eliminating the ones I knew weren't right at all and made an educated guess. Seemed as if I was doing that for all of them. It took me 1 hr to do 75 questions, that is why I don't think I was using the strategies. It worked for me. Saunders is all you need. I did the first tip of Suzanne's plan but I could not get the study guide because she says you need a full 6 weeks to do her study guide and I was taking NCLEX too soon. So that was all I did.

Around the 10th question I got two in a row, after that it seemed as if when I answered maybe every third or fourth multiple choice question, I would get one of those dreadful check all that apply. Thank you for the congratulations !!!!!! Lashawn :)

Hi All, I have not been on this website for awhile because of studying and other family distractors, but I took NCLEX-RN on Wednesday 12/27. I was searching through this section for two days trying to go on different experiences that other people had. I tell you, this test is unlike any test I have ever taken. The computer shut off at 75 and I thought for sure I failed. The reason why is because I got 15 check all that apply questions. Every time I answered a multiple choice question, a check all that apply question appeared. I was making little noises in the testing room trying not to be too loud and trying to stop myself from throwing the computer out the window. I also got alot of infection control and priority questions. I tortured myself and did nothing but wallow in my misery for two days. It was the most awful feeling ever. But I checked this morning and saw that I passed. It can be done. I am the worst standardized test taker in the world, but if I can do it, so can every one else. Never give up. Hi, I had to take ATI's throughout every semester that I was in school. I just graduated from the 14 month accelerated program and every semester that I had a clinical class, we had to take ATI. I only passed OB, community and leadership and failed all the rest. It was hard for me and my other classmates because I don't know how your school does it but my school goes by the individual rank and not the composite score. You had to get a 60 or higher on the individual rank score or you had to take it over non-proctored with a 90% or higher. If they would have went by my individual composite score I would not have to had take it over again. In my last semester which was this week, we had to take an nclex predictor test from ATI and if you did not get a 64.4 you have to take it over again. I got a 63.3 so I have to take it over again. They will not give me my diploma unless I pass this nclex predictor test. My school wants everyone have .95 predictability of passing nclex. I was at .91. ATI says that I still have the same chance of passing nclex as the people who achieved .95 predictability. To me, it is just a hassle. Oh well what can you do. I will take it monday and pass it since I was one or two questions off. Good luck with ATI's. I find what is helpful is looking at the DVD's instead of reading the book. Lashawn

Oh, I know the grant you are talking about. It is where the state pays your tuition, books, uniform etc... and you have to give back 2 or 3 yrs in an underserved hospital or clinic. Here is the info if you don't already know it. http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/scholarship/ The deadline passed but you can apply next year. You have to show that you are in need financially and at the time I could not apply for this one either because my husband was working at that time. Oh well. Hope you can apply for this one.
