  1. You are an outstanding Young Lady with a lot of responsibility. You work hard to achieve. Never compromise ur own standards because of what someone else says. Stay on your path and you will also achieve "Freedom" through education. These people that are suggesting to you to not work so hard will never be "FREE". They will depend on someone else to take care of them and provide for them. As long as they do that, they will be in servitude to the government or someone else. Your education will give you the FREEDOM to live where you want and send ur children to any school that u choose. Never compromise!
  2. No TV or Alcohol before bedtime, Drink Double Strength Chamomile Tea, Get a White Noise Machine, Turn off the Phone Ringer, Don't eat a Big Meal before bedtime and try to get at least 6 hours of sleep!
  3. I wonder if it was a "Let me show you that I'm running things around here" question. Due to the instructors personal need to show you that he or she was in control that's why the question had to be answered "THEIR" way. Sad to say that there are a number of petty people in the medical field. We would get more done if some people didn't have prove that My Daddy is Bigger Than Your Daddy! Brother, an old man gave me a piece of advice one time. He told me it's a case of "It's Your World and I'm Just Passing Through It"! Thus you do it her way until you get out of the class and then you do what you know is right after that. She is petty and not worth the energy. Get finished thhe class playing by her rules and once you have passed it just be thankful you're not married to her! Just joking. Try and not let it get you upset because that only gives her space in your head. Save that space for people you care about. Not a little person! Try and have a Great Christmas. Keep your mouth shut and pass the class. Then put her in your rear view mirror of life.
  4. I was trained as a Ground Search & Rescue Medic. Started working as a Nurse Tech in 82 before all of the Certification Requirements in TX. I now have 2 BS Degrees and I can't find a job so I went back and received my CNA Cert.(To make it official), EKG Tech Cert, Phlebotomy Cert., completed my 1st Semester of LVN School until I was accepted into CLS(Hematology School). So I should be able to get hired now until I graduate from Hematology School and sit for my ASCP Certification in Hematology (Blood Bank School) in Texas. Sometimes you have create your own trail. I will say too that my Instructors at the San Jacinto College North LVN School in Houston, TX were outstanding. I received some wonderful training. They were tough, but fair and lead by example.
  5. [h=2]Medications or substances causing Blue urine[/h]The following drugs, medications, substances or toxins are some of the possible causes of Blue urine as a symptom. This list is incomplete and various other drugs or substances may cause your symptoms (see Blue urine). Always advise your doctor of any medications or treatments you are using, including prescription, over-the-counter, supplements, herbal or alternative treatments. Artificial coloring in medications Methylene blue dye - can cause green or blue urine Risanpin - may make urine blue or green color. Triamterene
  6. There is a big push in the Medical Center in Houston for BSN because of hospital certification. Admin is pushing 20 yr ADN to get their BSN and that's not going to happen. University of Indiana has a LPN to BSN online program u might look at. Make sure Ca. accepts that program. I wish you the best of Luck. Just take a minute and see where the Nursing Industry is go to be in 5-7 years. Don't base ur decision on today's requirements.
  7. I am 51 years old and I will hope you have learned from my history. DO NOT TRUST ANYONE YOU WORK WITH FOR THE FIRST 6 MONTHS! That is called the 6 month rule and it helps you filter out the game players, the liars, the sincere people. This lets u find out about your supervisor(Will they help u or hang u out to dry during a screw up). Don't be rude to anyone. Always be helpful, but not used. If anything, go out of your way to considerate of your fellow works and patients. People (Unless they are a Sociopath) can not put up a deceptive front for the length of six months. At the end of the six months(A date u mark on your home Calendar). Do not discuss what you are doing with "ANYONE" whether they are ur personal friends, family, schoolmates or anybody. Reason being, this is a small world and u would be suprised "Who Knows Who". The same goes for Gossiping. Don't get involved(Rumors are for Fools Who Can't Read Newspapers). You never know who is going to be ur next employer or boss. Some people don't agree with me. I don't care about their opinion. My concern was to Honestly Answer your question. I wish you the best. Also, if you didn't "Hear it", it's not a fact. It's leagally called "Heresay" aka gossip! Stay Safe and Good Luck. The 6 months rule works well when ur dating to, so u don't get ur heart broken by a user!
  8. I am a 51 yo male with 2 BS degrees and I started LVN School just for a job until I got another job in my field. I completed the first semester of LVN School with a B average and worked my ass off. I have been accepted into a postgrduate Hematology program and that's why I didn't pursue the 2nd semester. With that out of the way. In this job market, if you have a good job then stick with it. DO NOT QUIT. On finances, again do not quit because you are about to go for the most Hellish ride of your life, especially with a child. I'm a survivor of 2 divorces and each time you financially start over. So hang tight on Nursing School and get through the divorce. Fear of failure is always there. If you don't pass a practical (On Hands Exam) after 2 tries you are out of the program. If you blow a course, you're out of the program. No questions asked. Now with all the other emotional things u r going through you don't need that stress Sword hanging above you. Nursing school is not fast paced, it's in overdrive and you are constantly studying or writing for grades. After your life settles down(aka post divorce and recovery period) then think about a night nursing school or get grants(DOL Has plenty, due to shortage) or loans or scholarships to pay for school(Remember u will be paying child support too). Now dealing with female nursing instructors, they don't reason or think like men so read your books, do your studies and KEEP UR HEAD DOWN AND UR MOUTH SHUT while in school and u will do fine. Don't argue with youe instuctors. Even if u win the fight u lose the battle. If u haven't noticed, women hold grudges and the bad ones will crucify you for arguing. The tests are desiged around female logic and are completely different than what I dealt with in my BS college classes taught by male professors. I had to learn a completely different testing style and l learned from it. You can have a GREAT Career in Nursing, especially being Male. We are wonderful for heavy lifting and they will ask for alot of help! Right now, take one hurdle at a time. Get through that hurdle and then go on to the next hurdle and you will do fine. But if you try to do all or most of it at once then you will CHOKE. Good Luck to you. I'm always around. BTW I would ICU Full Time for 2 yrs and I was trained as a Ground Search ad Rescue Medic. So I have done pt care in a critical care setting. Good Luck and pray on occasion,it helped me! This is my fifth career by the way. So don't be afraid of change, embrace the challenge.
  9. First, try and find it without alot of attention ie telling everyone u work with. From this pt forward develop a code system along with only using intitials for names and other identifying information. To me Mark Johnson is WK. I invert the M and use the next letter in the alphabet for the Last Name. For social security numbers or telephone numbers I change 4 to 8 or 8 to 4, 05 to 10, 10 to 05, etc..... Just change 2 to 3 variables and be consistent and not too complicated. Remember KISS, Keep It Simple Silly! Welcome to the world of be Human. It happens to all of us. That's how I learned. Good Luck. Stay Safe.
  10. Congrads on the new job. You will like night shift in the psych unit. You don't have the interuptions of dayshift like, doctors, transfers, visitors and patient interactions. The thing about night shift is to maintain your safety. Never let them get between you and your escape(the door). Don't take the docile patient for granted. He can explode on you in a second. If things are too quiet, go take a walk around and check on everybody. They are like kids. If they are too quiet, then something might be going on. Just check to be safe! Don't wait until the end of the night to do your charting. When you do that, usually all H*LL breaks loose and you regret it. Watch out for romantic encounters between patients. Talk to your supervisor about how to handle this. Watch out for your amblers, people who like to walk the halls at night for one reason or another. Just send them back to bed. Learn to control your voice tone, facial expressions and your responses to people. They will act off of your behaviors. Don't take life too seriously! Relax! I fought the Battle of Hastings alongside a gentleman one night. He came into the Dayroom and announced the battle while I was charting. I told him to go ahead, I'll be right there. I finished writing my paragraph and went to check on him. He was in his room quietly watching TV. No Sweat! Keep an eye out for OCD pts. It's a behaivor they can't control, but can hurt themselves with. Had a pt that developed a red rash around the buttocks. No one could figure out why. Was it bacterial or mental response to stress, we just didn't know. The pt was a OCD fixated on cleanliness. He stole a bottle of CONCENTRATED cleaner from the housekeeping cart to clean his toilet seat and wasn't rinsing it properly. He had it stashed in his closet under some clothes. Another Medical Mystery Solved. Like I said, don't take yourself too seriously. And do be leary of the QUIET patient, because you don't know what he is about to do. The one in my face yelling at me, I know exactly what he is up to! Make sure they SWALLOW their meds. Don't leave the cup there and TRUST THEM! You'll do fine. Just keep ur head on straight when everybody else is losing their's and u shall survive! Stay OFF the Cellphone and focus on your surroundings! Distractions can get u or ur pt hurt!
  11. You're right on the money. If you don't believe that it is safe to give the med, then let the preceptor stick her license out there. If you were right and the pt goes south then it's her rear in trouble. It's always easier to talk through a procedure than to get your hands dirty and "DO IT"! As a Preceptor, let her earn her pay by leading by example.
  12. I had thought to throw out to you before you apply at this Pain Clinic. Get the Doctors names who practice there and look them up through the state medical board site. U get their school, their speciality, any violations in practice and any fines paid. Also look for Anthesiologist as pain doctors. Due to their extensive education with the CNS and Medication they are some of the Best and Respected Pain Management Doctors and they are less likely to endanger their $180,000.00/ Year income on a non-legit operation. You will always be one of the best if you fly with Eagles. And don't mention any of this research in your job interviews or to fellow employees. Just let them know what you can do to help improve their quality of patient care. That's what they want anyway is an asset to help the team do a Better Job. I didn't say Superstar, don't be Cocky. Just be confident, tell them what you have done above and beyond the average student or employee and be positive. Don't complain about your past and be positive about growth and learning in the future. I wish you the best of luck. I hired people for 14 years and I speak from experience.
  13. According to the DEA. Make sure the Pain clinic is legit. Do they only deal in cash. Is the Pharmacy conveniently next door. Are people lined up around the building very early before opening hours. Is the office run like a fast food joint, get them and get them out quickly mentality. Are the MD's only prescribing just 2 to 3 medications only. DEA has been Busting a Number of these "Pain Clinics" and acquiring the MD's assets. So be careful where you work. No matter how good they Pay! You worked too hard to get that License. If you think I'm joking or being unrealistic, then go ahead and take your chances. Visiting hours are on every other Sunday with the Feds, they aren't as Nice As The State!
  14. Some people are just not "Happy" in any aspect of their lives and they spread their internal anger and frustration like a cancer. When I was a Supervisor working with Teamster Truck Drivers, I was taught to listen to the message and not the words. That way you understood what the negative party was trying to convey without taking anything personally. You might try that method with this Angry person and finish with a "Thank you" or "GOD Bless". The GOD Bless usually screws with their head because they don't how to respond and they feel uncomfortable being ugly to someone who just "Blessed" them. And to tell you the truth that "GOD Bless" can mean a variety of things from "GOD BLess" all the way to "Screw You". If you never say, they will never know. And nobody can complain about it! That also gives you a release, rather than getting Angry with the "Department Cancer". Also document any negative contacts that you have had with this person in case management or HR speaks with you about the person later. Never give anybody your notebook without a subpenea. Once you lose control of it you can't get it back. Get a little Dollar Store Notebook and note the Date, Time and what happened(Details only, no fluff, no opinion just facts). That may save you later if you have a problem with this person hurts you or falsely accuse of misbehavior and you have to defend yourself or patient care issues(Neglect, abuse, false documentation, etc....). I wish you the best and sincerely, GOD BLESS!
  15. The county sheriff's are always looking for nurses. Also try the agencies to get experience and contacts. Then there is the traveling nurse agencies if you want an adventure. Be careful of the oil compaines, because once you are in Saudi Arabia you have to put up with the abuse by the local men and you have "NO" rights because you are a woman. There is Hawaii, Fuji, Cruise Ships. So go have an adventure if you're not tied down! Good Luck to you.
