Male Nursing Student, Want to Work OB
Ain't equality great! They want it all, but don't ask them to be fair in return. Soon males will be the new minority

Nurse Mobbing/bullying
Divide and conquer. You just responded the way they, management, wanted you to. You are now part of the quagmire that reports anything and everything to management so you can all walk on pins and needles!

How do You deal with Man-Hating Female Nurses?
Tell it like it is brother! Those same hostile environment laws apply to men too! The females seem to forget that. One good lawsuit with them personally listed as well as the company as defendents will stop the BS! Use a voice activated tape recorder too! It is an insult to men who have accepted and fought for equal rights to then be discriminared by the very ones the men supported in their struggle. Bt the way, there are more women than men in the U.S. now, so men are now the minority and should have the advantages of all those non-discriminatory laws. Yeah right! It's all so sad. Our livelihood is not a joke!:rotfl:

Show me the Money
I strongly suggest you job shadow in several different areas for a full shift following a particular nurse around all day, so you see everything involved before you make such a commitment.

I want to change careers from nursing to teaching, help!
I strongly suggest you job shadow, and I mean every minute, three different nurses in three different settings, e.g. hospital med surg, LTC nursing home, redi med, etc. Why? A nurse is responsible for their routine stuff, like meds and Tx's plus if anything comes up, say an emergency, guess what, you still have to somehow get the other stuff done just as if it were a normal day. A nurse has to answer to EVERYONE! All the pts if they want help all at the same time, oh well. it's your a... er license. Drs, family, friends, housekeeping, management, other nurses, ... the list goes on. It's not like you can concentrate on a particular task, until it is done, and then go on to another one. Typically you are responsible for several tasks that have to be done now! Of course often they can't be, but guess what? You are still held over the fire for not getting it all done somehow. It's a no win situation. Damned if you do, and...

Experiences of the male nursing student
The equal opportunity and treatment you recieve in the army should be no less than the opportunity and treatment that a male gets. That being said, you are wrong to deny them the opportuity to perform their jobs as nurses. Let's say a male mechanic might feel better knowing a male mechanic is holding up that 150 pound transmission while he bolts it up, but there you are. Does he prefer to have another male with more upperbody strength than you holding it up so he doesn't get smashed? Probably. Will that pass the muster? No. So why should your comfort level be more important than his?

Ratio at first job
] You must remember that the good nurse/patient ratiois protect your license and give the patient better care because you actually have time to provide the care. IN LTC any more than 30 residents to one nurse is too much! I work a 50:1 ratio hall and a 20: 1 ratio hall. Guess which one raises my blood pressure the most. Your health is important too! Sure it depends on the acuity, but I'm speaking in general. Also, non-profits have the better ratios! Hint!

Anyone else here do pre-admission screenings and marketing?
I am looking for your type position. I have a marketing degree, and have been an LPN for one year. I previously did outside sales. My question is: What is involved in your assesment of potential new residents, and how long do you spend on one potential resident before you are done with your share of the work? Any advice would be greatkly appreciated.

Why can't we just be nurses anymore?!?!?
You can't. That's why we need good nurse to patient ratios. It's a win/win for both! The state legislature is the only way to go.

Pre-pouring meds
I must speak up. Where I work overtime is forbidden. You somehow, (haven't figured out how yet), must get pre-approval for all overtime, quite difficult on the off shifts, since management isin't there. Yet, when you are already sooo busy, and something happens, e.g. a death, an accident, etc. You just got alot more to do with no extra time allotted. So you take the extra time (OT) to get it done, and then get counseled for working OT. It's a no win situation. It adds unnecessary stress, and is just plain wrong! How and why do nurses put up with this?
-
Pre-pouring meds
The lack of an appropriate amount of time allocated to the care of the patients/residents was the root cause of her death. That's a mangement decision, yet I doubt they were wrote up or :angryfire fired for this.
-
Pre-pouring meds
We have to stop and consider the cause or reason some feel compelled to pre-pour. What is the reason? Too many meds for too many people to be passed in too short a time. Who gets blamed if in a rush a med error occurs? The nurse, yet the rush is caused by management's poor planning for safety and care; instead the profit motive wins. Too much to do in too little time is due to the lack of fair nurse to patient ratios which afford good quality care throughout the shift as opposed to a mad rush to get it all done with less than your best effort due to the time constraints. And if you lose your license over an error, well they can have a new LPN in just 12 months! It's sorta like a ferris wheel, nurses on, nurses off.l

I am back stronger than ever
Have you considered an assisted living facility? A lady I know who is not in the health field just sold her furniture business to buy and run an AL facility. APPARENTLY YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO BE A NURSE!

Is it worth it to be independent?
What is does NSO stand for? Where are they What are they?

anyone considering going back to school to become an RN?
So how do you like the RN program? I'm an LPN from Ivy Tech's Fort Wayne location. I've been out 1 year, and have worked in LTC since graduation. I have since discovered Hospitals won't hire LPNs, and the patient to nurse ratios in LTC have run from a low of 20 to a high of 50 (ugh). What has your experience been like?:)

Why Do We Tolerate This?
Right in front of me one female nurse said to another "Your *** is getting smaller isin't it? Second female nurse said "Yes it is." So I said what if I had said that (male nurse)? Second nurse said "You had better not" Is this freedom of speech thing only for protescted classes now? Guess what there are less men in the country than women. Shouldn't we get our turn with these wonderful laws? Truth be told everyone needs to be treated the same.:angryfire

where are the nursing shortages?
The advertising in specific newspapers that meet specific ethnicity reach goals is required advertising. This is one aspect of affirmative action. The biggest savings found in employee turnover is the ability to raid their retirement funds. A retirement plan that is fully funded by an employer is theirs, (the employers) to take and keep if the employee leaves before being fully vested. This is 5 years minimum. (Don't forget the compounded interest this money has made too.) This is what corporate raiders do when looking to buy a company. If their retirement plans are overinvested, they raid that money. If the company goes bankrupt, the government, i.e. you and I, pay the retirement bill.

where are the nursing shortages?
I live near Auburn, IN. Where is this hospital? Which one? How far?

where are the nursing shortages?
Nurses eat their young because of inadequate staffing levels. It's all managements fault due to managements push for profits. If they can make a profit in FL, CA, etc. with staff ratios of 1:6; 1:7, they surely can elsewhere. The unnecessary stress, overworking of employees (leading to firings for sleep deprived errors), and therefore generally bad attitudes would be so much better, and the patients/residents would receive better care as a result. How many of you nurses actually complete your med passes within in the two hour window. I know it doesn't happen in LTC, yet it's our license on the line if state shows up at med pass time. Nursing is in need of a cure. How can we really help others in the long run if we can't even help ourselves?

Experiences of the male nursing student
Being put upon for extra physical labor will wear you down physically over the years. Equal pay for equal work that's supposed to be equality. I am a male nurse too. The little conversations that make a setting more personal are not always shared with the lone male nurse either. I have seen female nurses make comments that would get a male nurse in trouble. It's not right, fair, or appreciated. e.g. one female nurse to another, in front of me, "Your *** is getting smaller, isin't it?" Yep, I've been working out. What if I had said that? The thought police, free speech infringement upon my rights is bullshit! I said to her, what if I had said that? She said "I had better not." When did men become second class citizens?
