Why are so many nurses against unions?
I wish I had the choice to go union. I live in a Right to Work state. They only unions happen to be those that work in grocery stores, larger chain and some of the specialty trades. Every hospital in the state FIGHT against unions. In fact the reason you see less unions? Because we are turning into a country where politics is pushing the Right to Work nonsense! You basically have no rights. Sure some are on the books. But talk to any lawyer in my state. It is one long hard battle to win against the hospitals here. If that were my union? I would be vocal at the meetings. We try to be vocal at our hospital Town Halls here? We actually get escorted out by security!

Support Planned Parenthood Today!
Well we are far from Nazis. Did you forget your biology class lessons? Responding with sheer emotion and not much actual facts. A zygote and embryo are not capable of sustaining life. A fetus at many early stages is also unable to live outside the woman's body unless there is intensive medical intervention.

Hurricane Irma: Are per diem nurses USUALLY required to work during a hurricane/disaster?
Exactly how it works. When I did a lot of per diem it would tie up my days and it was unknown until the morning of if I got called in. I was just referring to the poster claiming there were NO BENEFITS, there are some. I think I did rack up some pretty significant amounts of $$$ in my 401K with the hospital adding in their portion to it when I was just per diem. That was pretty nice! Families going on vacations to the Water Park or Disney really like the benefit discounts they get also. Plus someone claimed they are not covered if they got hurt at work. That is wrong, they have to have Workers Comp.

nurses not using stethoscopes
LOL I am an active RN and never stopped working! Funny. Not at all retired, too young to retire. You have been a nurse for all of how many years NG? Talk to me about my experience not being relative to the conversation, when you have my wide variety of experience and the YEARS I have in it! You are no where near what I have. Try: all ICU's, ER's, including Trauma ER's, Trauma ICU's, SWAT RN, PACU, Pre-Op, Neuro ICU's, Open Heart First Receiver ICU, Neonatal ICU, Ped's ICU, Psych, Detox, you name it NG, I have done it. House Sup, Dept. Manager, While doing all of that I have also taught every level of nursing at the college level. You want to talk down to me NG? Insulting is what you are.

Hurricane Irma: Are per diem nurses USUALLY required to work during a hurricane/disaster?
I've worked plenty of Per Diem jobs before. The Per Diem positions at my hospital now DO require all staff work a minimum of shifts per month/week. Otherwise why would they keep their position for you? They do have some benefits too. All have to be covered by Workman's Comp. Cafeteria discount, the gift shop discount, the other discounts such as movie tickets at a reduced price, belonging to our Credit Union, having a 401K and other benefits. What they DON'T get is the medical and dental benefits and PTO hours.

If injured at work then Workers Comp would kick in to cover you. Workers Comp has to cover all employees whether they are FT, PT or even Per Diem without regular benefits.

nurses not using stethoscopes
Well like I stated in another post, I've been an RN for over 40 years. I've worked every single specialty, except Labor and Delivery. The thing is people that claim it takes too long, must be doing it wrong. It takes MERE MINUTES! I teach my students how to do one and by the end of the semester they get it done like it is second nature. Priorities? Ok, then a rapid is a priority. I like to PREVENT the rapid or codes. But that is just me.

Health Care is Not a Right
Your words speak for themselves. Now you are trying to backtrack. I think you don't have the experience in the real world. You are just reciting rhetoric. Just my opinion. I've encountered people like you before.

Verbally Abused
Hopefully discussing this with your doctor may help. I don't know if you also have a therapist? But that would help with the anxiety also. Good luck. It does get easier.

Health Care is Not a Right
Which is why so many people are having such strong issues with this very subject in the political arena. We realize how it is hurting real people and it breaks our heart.

Health Care is Not a Right
I totally agree! I think the OP is in the very beginning of school for nursing. They have not experienced near enough exposure to a system that they have already formulated beliefs on. From what I have read from the OP; their "beliefs" are just the far right rhetoric propaganda that they push. I truly don't think the OP is going to be happy being a nurse. The OP will feel patients are getting too much that they don't deserve. The OP doesn't realize, that is NOT our job to decide who gets healthcare or not. We are to care for all patients equally. I must care for the child molester (that is in custody) that comes in the ER or PACU the same as the bank executive. It is not our job to judge them.

Is leaving before hurricane abandonment?
It is not about being a Martyr at all! It is about the patients. I don't know why you went into nursing. I know why I did. Of course my life is important, so is my family's safety. I am certain the hospitals there have plans for the family members and pets. The hospital buildings have to be built to sustain the potential damage of those storms in the area. Just what would you expect the fragile patients to do that are unable to be discharged? Perhaps connected to monitors etc? Most hospitals meet the rigorous safety standards. The buildings (hospitals) must be able to sustain the potential damage of a Cat 5 Hurricane and other storms in that area. I know they have huge reliable generators that are tested regularly to keep them going also. I personally would feel safer with my self and family in the hospital. Don't call us martyrs. You mean that as an insult and that is just so wrong. I have 40 years of experience. All of it in Critical Care areas, then Psych and management. I am a nurse because I love helping people. Plain and simple.

The point is it takes minutes, yes mere minutes to whip through an assessment. I don't know how long it takes you but I don't take long at all! I also teach at the college level and my students appreciate learning this skill. By the end of the semester with me, they can all do a quick head to toe like it is second nature.

You are cherry-picking. All patients deserve the best of care. Unless you are a true genuine psychic you don't know who is going to turn south!

That is just scary. Good learning for you on what not to do. Follow what you learn at the clinicals. The assessments at the beginning of the start of each shift is the norm.

nurses not using stethoscopes
by HeySis #32 10 Sep 5 by HeySis, BSN, RN Our stethoscopes are at each bay, get used on that patient only (by one nurse) and then cleaned before the next patient comes through. I work PACU, and I listen to every single patients lung sounds... and never listen for BS, because most patient not having them is a normal finding after surgery, so why waste my time. But I DO NOT chart that I listened to them either. My assessments are very focused, and not head to toe. For example, all patients get airway, cognition, pain and surgical site assessments (along with VS, Aldrete and Namdu), after that it varies depending on the surgery. Written by SUZIL: I have always bought and used my own stethoscope. Even working PACU. No nurse I have worked with has come in without their own stethoscope. We assess head to toe even in PACU. We chart what we assess. Our charting also is formulated for a head to toe. I just can't imagine sharing a stethoscope. I want the best to auscultate the heart and lungs.

The thing is those "head to toe" assessments do not take that long to perform. I call nurses that refuse or try to justify NOT doing them just plain lazy. There is no darn reason not to do them. Worse case scenario? Dude, I've been a nurse way longer than you and have worked every single specialty except Labor and Delivery. Yes, the worst case can happen EVERY WHERE AT ANY TIME! I'm sorry but you are scary and frightening with your lack of care and attitude. BTW, yes I also worked the ER and we WERE EXPECTED TO CHECK THEIR SKIN TOO! If we sent a patient to the floor and we had not assessed their skin and there was ANY kind of problem, we got written up. The problem is none of these assessments take that long! Why are you so bothered by doing them?

Continue to do your full assessments as you were taught! Those nurses that tell you that are pure lazy. Do not listen to them. Learn and keep the good habits. Trust me, what you learn now will be your foundation as your grow. I would stay there the minimum time you need to, then move on. That is not good nursing! Trust me there are much better places to learn from.
